Dr Lyn Bishop FOUNDER AND PRINCIPAL/CEO BA Hons (Psych), MEd ADMIN, MEd STUD, MBA PhD (QLD), MAPsS, FACEL, JP (QUAL), FAIM Dr Lyn Bishop has had a long and distinguished career in the State Education Department. She has held the positions of Senior Mistress, Deputy Principal, Principal, Deputy Executive Director of Metropolitan East Region (responsible for over 200 primary, secondary and special schools in the Region), and A/Director of Quality Assurance for Education Queensland, before leaving the Department at the end of 1996 to set up Sheldon College as an independent, non-denominational, co-educational College in the Redland Shire. Dr Bishop opened Sheldon College as its Foundation Principal in 1997. Dr Bishop holds Bachelor Degrees in Arts and Education; Masters Degrees in Educational Studies, Educational Administration and Business Administration, as well as a Doctor of Philosophy in Education. Dr Bishop is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management, and a Fellow of the Australian College of Educational Leaders. Dr Bishop is a fully qualified psychologist and is registered with the Queensland Psychologists Board and the Australian Psychological Society. Dr Bishop is also a Justice of the Peace (Qualified). Dr Bishop was also a part time lecturer in the Business Faculty at the Queensland University of Technology where she lectured in the Master of Business Administration Program (MBA). In 1999 Dr Bishop won the Australian Institute of Management Professional Manager of the Year. This is the first time this award had been won by someone in the field of education. In 2002 Dr Bishop won the prestigious Ernst and Young Queensland Entrepreneur of the Year and the Australian Entrepreneur of the Year for a Community, Social and Not-for-Profit Enterprise. She was also awarded a Centenary Medal for services to education in 2003. In 2013 Dr Bishop was awarded the QUT Most Outstanding Alumni Award for the Faculty of Education and in 2014 Dr Bishop was also awarded the title of QELI Ambassador for her contribution to educational leadership through the Queensland Educational Leadership Institute. In 2018, Sheldon College was recognised as Queensland’s only school to be certified to the International Standard in Quality Assurance (ISO 9001: 2015) and is one of only two schools Australia-wide, to receive this certification. Ms Peta Barker Email: [email protected] OF TEACHING AND LEARNING – Years 7 to 12 BEd (Studies)Peta is a passionate educator with 25 years’ experience. Having completed her Bachelor of Education Studies, she fulfilled many roles within Education Queensland (English/Drama teacher, Head of Department, Principal Education Advisor – Australian Curriculum, and Deputy Principal), before her path brought her to Sheldon College.Peta joined the Sheldon College Senior Executive team in 2015, where her role as Director of Teaching and Learning (Years 7-12) is integral in driving best practice in teaching and learning across the secondary years. With a personal interest in digital pedagogy – and a natural flair for creative and critical thinking – Peta works to inspire academic staff to innovate within their classroom and ignite

students’ passion for learning. She believes that student learning is most powerful when schools and home have a strong relationship, and welcomes opportunities to build effective partnerships with families.2018 will be an exciting time within the secondary years and Peta looks forward to strengthening the sub-College’s focus on producing passionate, driven and successful young adults.

Mr Darren Harvey Email: [email protected] – ASTA (Australian School of The Arts)BEd (Drama & English) (Hons) DramaEntering his twenty-first year at Sheldon College, Darren Harvey continues to develop the Arts as part of our College curriculum in the Arts Education program. Due to the outstanding success of classroom Arts subjects and all of our Ensembles, along with the development of the College’s School Musical Theatre Studies, Darren will continue to expand the Australian School of the Arts further, with a fully developed curriculum on offer for all students across the College, from Preschool to Year 12. With a Bachelor of Education Degree (Drama) and experience in teaching and performing arts, Darren offers all students an opportunity to discover their performing/acting talent and true potential through classroom Drama and the acting component of the ASTA program.

In 2007, Darren undertook a six week sabbatical tour visiting many Arts Schools and Universities across America and Canada, with an agenda focussed on analysing different Arts Schools and different stages of development. That same year, Darren was appointed to the new role of Manager of the Institute of The Arts, a position he has enjoyed implementing and developing now as the Director of the Australian School of the Arts. In 2010, Darren also visited the Singapore School of the Arts to look at the incredible arts facilities and programs that are currently being offered there. Darren continues to be involved with the College’s Senior Executive team, a role that affords him the opportunity to contribute strategically at a whole of College level. In addition, Darren has gained further experience and success over past years as coach of many sporting teams at various levels, including coaching the U18’s AFL team to a grand final appearance, and winning the premiership. 2017 was another very busy year for Darren and the Arts department, with his role as producer and director of the Musical “Mary Poppins”, performed at the Redland Performing Arts Complex and the 13th Annual Arts Academy Awards held at the Sheldon Event Centre. In addition, Darren was honoured to take on the role of Chair of the 20 Year Celebration Committee, overseeing and co-ordinating a number of memorable events throughout the course of the year.In 2018, Darren looks forward to the ongoing challenge that Sheldon College provides and knows that it will be another exciting and challenging year of enriched learning experiences and achievements at the College. He is particularly excited about producing and directing Sheldon College’s 20th Musical – “Legally Blonde”. The ASTA Professionals Program will enter it’s thirteenth year in 2018 and remains a very exciting adventure for teachers, parents and students alike, with a focus on ongoing growth and evolution. In 2018 the Program will see the introduction of the newly formed School of Fashion and Costume Design.

Mr John Lord Email: [email protected] OF COLLEGE OPERATIONS BEd St DipT(Primary) John Lord has been a member of the Sheldon College staff since 2002 and currently holds the position of Director of College Operations. Prior to working at Sheldon College John held a number of senior management positions: Head of Middle School (Kelvin Grove State College); Deputy Principal (Ferny Grove State High School); Head of Department Physical Education (Ferny Grove State High School); Head of Sport (Rockhampton State High School). John’s first few years of teaching were spent as a Physical Education Itinerant Teacher in the Central Queensland towns of Capella, Tieri, Clermont, Ruby Vale, Kilcoy and Morayfield. With 17 years’ experience as a Health and Physical Education teacher in Queensland, prior to commencing at Sheldon College, John has held the positions of Board of Senior Secondary School

Studies Chairperson for Senior Health Education, Chairperson of the Senior Health Syllabus Accreditation Committee and a member of the Evaluation Review Panel for the Health and Physical Education (P-10 Syllabus). John has also been a Guest Lecturer on a number of occasions for the University of Queensland’s Human Movements Faculty. While in the position of Head of Middle College, Kelvin Grove State College, John lead the New Basics Trial being introduced by Education Queensland and directed the twelve month pilot program.John thoroughly enjoys working at Sheldon College and has developed many strong relationships with students, staff and parents.

Mrs Michelle Luhrmann Email: [email protected] OF EARLY LEARNINGBEd(Primary) AssocDipEd(Early Childhood) Post Grad Degree (Child & Family Studies)A skilled practitioner with over 26 years teaching experience, Michelle holds a Bachelor of Education Degree, an Associate Diploma of Early Childhood Education and a Post Graduate Degree in the area of Child and Family Studies. As the Director of Early Learning, Michelle works with a dynamic group of teachers who are responsible for ensuring that the Early learning programs offered at Sheldon College are second-to-none. She is directly responsible for Curriculum Implementation and for the general care and education of all children enrolled from Wonderland to Prep. She plays an active role in classrooms and oversees each individual child’s progress and development. She is across all aspects of staff development and

performance management and is always available to meet with parents to discuss issues regarding their child’s education.Her inherent passion for Early Childhood Education not only won Michelle a National Award for Teaching Excellence it is also the reason why she is so actively involved in so many facets of Early Childhood education within the wider community. Michelle’s background in education has always been involved with Early Childhood Education. Throughout her career she has spent time as a classroom teacher, a Director of a Long Day Care Centre and a TAFE Lecturer in the area of Early Childhood Studies. She is pleased to say that she is now entering her eighteenth year at Sheldon College and can’t wait to see what 2018 has in store. Michelle is looking forward to another exciting year working with all students within the close and supportive community that is Sheldon College.

Mrs Louise Morris Email: [email protected] OF TEACHING AND LEARNING – Years 1 to 6 BEd BTchLouise is an experienced educator with over 26 years of teaching experience. She holds a Bachelor of Teaching Primary Degree majoring in Physical Education and Bachelor of Education Degree. Louise is a Literacy and Numeracy Coach as part of the Independent Schools Queensland Coaching Academy. In 2014 Louise joined the Senior Executive Team as Director of Teaching and Learning Primary. This role will see her directly responsible for curriculum development and the teaching and learning of students in Years 1 to 6. Louise feels privileged to lead and work with a dynamic and passionate group of teachers and with partnership from parents within her role and to ensure all students are learning to their true academic, social and emotional learning potential.

Prior to her arrival at Sheldon College Louise had the opportunity to fulfil various positions during her career in Education Queensland. Her most recent roles have involved curriculum leadership and reform as part of school administration teams within various high performing state schools in the Redlands District. In these positions Louise also led and developed a range of Learning Support, Special Education and Gifted Education programs to support the range of learning needs across all phases of a primary school. She was one of the first to complete the regional training requirements to become a Gifted Education Mentor.Louise is passionate about making a difference and engaging students to reach their full potential through high quality curriculum, teaching and learning and is always striving for continuous improvement. She looks forward to an exciting year working the dynamic and supportive Sheldon College community.

Mr Rick Samuels Email: [email protected] OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT DipT(Primary) GradDip ECE

Rick has been with Sheldon College since its inception and he is passionately committed to the College, its ethos and its community. Over the last 19 years he has undertaken various roles from Preschool Teacher, to Director of Student Services and then Director of Early Learning before being assigned the Community Engagement portfolio. This area of the College focuses on promoting the College’s standards, ethos and values and their connection to personal happiness. Rick works with students, staff, parents and the wider community and has three major target areas for the year. Through the use of Drama he aims to build positive psychological capacities in our students by developing their creative capacities which aligns with the College’s LINQ philosophy. Rick is also

helping all stakeholders strengthen their character through the development of personality virtues. Furthermore, he works to improve the College experience for parents via opportunities to volunteer and the oversight of the College’s Outside of School Hours Care facility – ‘Our Place’.Rick assumes responsibility for the administration of Chaplaincy within the College including pastoral care, support for families in need and seeking to help people reflect on what gives them meaning and purpose in their lives. Rick has lived in the Redlands for the past 31 years and for the last 33 years he has worked in a wide variety of Early Childhood contexts, combining education and care. Mr Samuels is looking forward to working alongside families again this year with the focus of helping to build people of strength and virtue.

Mrs Lisa Slender Email: [email protected] OF STUDENT SERVICES BTch BEd(APD) MEd Lisa has been working in her chosen vocation of Education for the past 25 years. She has worked across both the state and private sectors. Lisa taught at Sheldon College as a foundation staff member in 1997. She was delighted to return to the College in 2007 as the Director of Student Services. Lisa has completed her Masters of Education, majoring in Educational Leadership and Management and she enjoys the opportunity to participate in professional development in the areas of Pastoral Care, Student Wellbeing and Cybersafety. Lisa has had great experience working with students presenting challenging behaviours in the classroom and has taught in a number of state schools throughout South East Queensland. Lisa was seconded by

Education Queensland to work as an advisory visiting specialist for Behaviour Management. In this role, Lisa was responsible for all behaviour management and social skilling programs across a cluster of Gold Coast schools. She valued the ability to work as a mentor teacher in establishing classroom environments that promoted student achievement and success. Lisa lectured in the Education Faculty at Griffith University for 5 years. She has enjoyed the opportunity to work with preservice teachers and liaise with many state and private schools across South East Queensland. Lisa is keen to ensure the effective development of the College Pastoral Care and Camping programs and is focused on ensuring the students attending Sheldon College are well balanced and highly effective participants as they progress into the wider community. She works very closely with the Year Level Co-ordinators across the College and continues to focus on the promotion of our high standards. Lisa enjoys working closely with the College community and welcomes all students and families to meet with her throughout the year. She views the home-school connection as vital to effective education and she is passionate about ensuring each student is able to reach his/her full potential. Lisa is passionate about giving students the skills they need for a successful and happy life beyond Sheldon College. Lisa was particularly excited about two new initiatives that were implemented in recent years and looks forward to assisting with these in 2018. These included the first International Community Service trip to Borneo for our Senior Students and the Introduction of the Duke of Edinburgh Award for our Year 10 students. Both of these initiatives have provided our students with life changing experiences and opportunities. Lisa believes that the role of the Student Services office is to support both students and their families as we work together to ensure individual success for all students.

Mrs Diane Vandermeer Email: [email protected] OF SENIOR SCHOOLINGBEdSt DipTDiane Vandermeer joined Sheldon College in 2001 as the Director of Senior Schooling. Mrs Vandermeer has a wealth of experience in the field of senior schooling having held many senior positions in this area within Education Queensland.Diane’s background in education spans 30 years, and during that time, she has had direct experience with Senior Schooling issues at a management level for over 20 years.Diane lectured at QUT in teacher education and was appointed as the inaugural Head of School of Applied Studies at Alexandra Hills Senior College. In addition, she also performed the role of Head of School Continuing Education for a period of time.

These roles encompassed responsibilities across education and training sectors in adult tertiary preparation, community education and training, Senior Schooling staff management, budgeting and curriculum implementation.In order to be at the cutting edge of Senior Schooling curriculum development and implementation, Diane researched current trends and best practice both nationally and internationally.Diane took up the appointment of Education Advisor Senior Schooling for Metropolitan East Region where she liaised with 45 Secondary and Special schools to implement Senior Schooling programs. In this capacity, Diane was involved in regional and state policy-making committees and established links with business and industry.Diane held the position of Head of Department Senior Schooling for eight years and has current knowledge of policy and procedures in this area. During this time Diane established business and industry networks in the Bayside District and greater Brisbane area.Diane has developed a vision for Senior Schooling, which is being implemented at Sheldon College. This framework embodies many of the recommendations proposed in the White Paper of the “Education and Training Reforms for the Future”.The overarching aim is to facilitate quality education programs and enhance partnerships between Sheldon College and tertiary and other training organisations, business, industry and the community in order to provide senior Secondary students with “Pathways to Success.”In a context of academic excellence, individual senior education and training plans are developed according to student needs and aspirations. To achieve this, Diane conducts interviews with each of the Year 11 and Year 12 students and consults with their parents on a case-by-case basis.Study programs linked with universities provide students with credit transfer towards future degree courses or guaranteed entry to selected degree courses.Coaching, TAFE programs, work education, core skills training, personal development, mentoring and school based traineeships and apprenticeships are some of the senior schooling programs available to students.

Mr Murray James Email: [email protected] OF ICTFilm, Television & New Media; Sheldon College TV (SCTV), Australian School of the ARTS (ASTA)BEd(Media/Information Technology)Since the first time Murray saw Star Wars, he has always had a very keen interest in how movies are made, especially the application of technology and the construction of special effects. As well as a continued interest in film making, Murray enjoys all forms of sport, especially tennis, cricket, volleyball and cross country.

Murray graduated from Queensland University of Technology in 1998 with a Bachelor of Education in Secondary Communications, specialising in Film and Television and Information Technology.

During his time at Alexandra Hills State High School, Murray developed and implemented the Film and Television program into the senior curriculum and also assisted with the rewrite and technological update of the Media and Information Processing and Technology programs.

Murray assisted the Queensland Curriculum Council with the writing and testing of the Media Strand of new P-10 Arts Syllabus.

Murray is passionate about supporting staff and students in developing their skills with technology through self-learning and he has provided many workshops and professional development activities.

Murray is also passionate about creating educational tools that can deliver education outside the confines of the classroom and has developed an online curriculum resource for the Senior Subject Information Processing and Technology, which allows students to access all facets of the course at any time on the World Wide Web. Murray was given recognition of this educational tool with an Excellence in Teaching Award from the Rotary Club of Cleveland.

Murray looks forward to working once again with the staff and students at Sheldon College and documenting life through a range of video productions.

This is Murray’s 17th year at Sheldon College.

Mr David Savage Email: [email protected], ACADEMY OF SPORTBArts DipMus Postgrad DipEdDavid Savage is delighted to continue this year in the role of Director of the Sheldon Academy of Sport.

The Sheldon Academy of Sport covers the College’s professionally coached sports of Athletics (Cross Country, Track & Field and Speed & Agility training), Swimming (Learn to Swim, Squads and Club), Tennis and Triathlon, along with their associated world class facilities. Academy programs cater for young beginners and social athletes, right through to State and National Champions, and even those competing on the international stage.

Since starting out as a junior tennis player at the age of 8, David has enjoyed playing, coaching, officiating and watching a wide range of sports. From co-coaching North Brisbane / QUT United to the Brisbane Women’s Soccer Premier League title to planning and opening Sheldon College’s tennis centre, David has a passion for all things sport.

In his 17 years at Sheldon College, David began as a member of the teaching staff, spent 12 years as the College’s Director of Sport, and then became the inaugural Director of the Sheldon Academy of Sport at the beginning of 2017. In his role, David aims to encourage and enable as many students as possible to fulfil their sporting potential. David loves watching young students participate for the first time just as much as seeing older students win state titles. He is dedicated to continuous improvement and to building upon the many sporting successes already achieved in the school’s short history.

David strongly encourages parents to get their children involved in sport at Sheldon College. As well as the obvious physical and health benefits, research shows that children who play sport do better in school, develop personal discipline and learn how to get on with others. David believes Sheldon College offers an exceptionally supportive environment for such sporting activities, utilising first class facilities. This year he is particularly looking forward to planning the addition of an Academy of Sport clubhouse, to sit between the tennis courts and the top oval.

David still enjoys playing competitive tennis and loves the odd social round of golf during his holidays. He supports the Socceroos, Arsenal and Brisbane Roar.

Head of Faculty – English and Languages Education BCI(Drama) BEd(Secondary)“Be guided by the stars which you place high in the canopy of your night sky”

So too, Brenton believes that the young ladies and gentlemen, and staff, that he works with each day, need to be grateful for the talents and abilities that they have, and let them shine! So too, he believes we need to dream big have a strong work ethic throughout the year to ensure that our dreams become realities, and that our stars shine bright. By being aspirational and wanting the best for ourselves we set high goals to achieve them. Brenton is excited about commencing his 13th year at the College. During this time, he has worked hard with students to have them achieve their goals and ambitions in life. He has been an active Year Level

Co-ordinator and NAPLAN administrator at Sheldon College. He continues to be a marker and panellist for the Queensland, Curriculum and Assessment Authority. As the Head of Faculty - English and Languages Education, he believes that the skills of reading, writing and speaking, skills inherent in the English Curriculum, are skills that prepare people for life. Consequently, he is leading a team this year that are committed to reaching for the stars, for excelling in English and Mandarin, and ensuring that high quality outcomes are reached. Brenton firmly believes that with a strong work ethic and persistence, we can make our stars shine brightly! As Home Group Teacher for 12D, he is very much looking forward to encouraging and consolidating a love of learning, language and respect for each other this year. He is looking forward to helping the Seniors of 2018 see their names up in lights, at events and pursuits, that will make them shine. In the classroom, Brenton is a facilitator of learning and is passionate, enthusiastic and committed to his students and his curriculum. He aims to foster his Drama background and skills into his English classes in the Middle and Senior Colleges.Outside of work, Brenton loves travelling the world and has an ambition to fill his passport with stamps from countries around the world. He also loves reading, going to the movies and enjoying a great meal. Brenton is a keen cook and enjoys baking for his classes. ‘When stressed, eat cake!’ is a motto that he lives by. Brenton aims to foster responsibility, commitment and a rigorous work attitude in his students. He also wants them to be critical thinkers who judge and question information that is provided by the media. Brenton believes students who are responsible for their learning and who self-direct themselves will ultimately shine, like the stars that they are!Brenton looks forward to a most successful 2018.

Mrs Catherine Heiner Email: [email protected] of Faculty – HumanitiesBA BEd GradDipT(Sec) Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace TrainingCatherine graduated from Griffith University and has taught for over 30 years in state and private secondary schools and in the TAFE system. She has held positions of Subject Master History, Head of Department Studies of Society and Environment and Acting Deputy Principal at Beenleigh SHS. She was a Foundation teacher at Wellington Point SHS in 1988 and has taught at Cleveland District SHS and Mitchell Secondary Department. She has written sample modules and presented papers for the Qld History Teachers’ Association (QHTA) as well as given presentations for the Qld Association for Gifted and Talented Children (QAGTC). In 2001, she implemented the Certificate III and IV in Education (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) course at the Indigenous Australian People’s Unit,

Southbank Institute of TAFE, designed to train Teacher Aides to work with Indigenous children in the classroom.Having undertaken extensive professional development in the area of literacy development and genre writing skills, Catherine is keen to equip students with the necessary skills and confidence to conduct research and to write in an appropriate academic style. In 2011, she was invited to be on an advisory panel for the Parliamentary Education Office, Canberra, as they were preparing support material for the National Curriculum in Civics and Citizenship Education. In 2012, she was an External Panellist evaluating QSA History Assessment as part of the National Curriculum implementation. She is a qualified marker for the Short Response Items paper of the Queensland Core Skills Test and was a member of the initial group of teachers deciding on the Common Curriculum Elements. In 2015, Catherine was commissioned to edit the English version of a novel called The Longest Round, by Swedish author, Edna Alsterland. A love of writing led her to become a senior writer for a local publication Suburban Living. In 2016, Catherine was invited to become a “Critical Friend” evaluating the updated Qld Modern History Syllabus due for implementation in 2019.A special interest in the education and extension of Gifted and Talented children led Catherine to serve on the Regional Advisory Committee for Gifted and Talented and to judge the QAGTC Tournament of Minds at local and national levels of the competition. She particularly understands the needs of the Visual Spatial Gifted child. In 2015, Catherine presented a paper at the International Research Association for Talent Development and Excellence Conference (IRATDE) on “Socratic

Catherine has two boys who attended Sheldon College from Prep to Year 12 and who are now studying at university in the areas of Mathematics and Computer Science. Catherine is looking forward to continuing in the role of Head of Faculty Humanities.

Head of Faculty – The Arts BA(Creative) GradDipEd(Secondary) AMusA MACE AIMMJulianne is passionate about learning – learning about learning, learning how she learns and learning about how her students learn. She believes every student is a supernova waiting to happen, and looks forward to kick-starting this journey with her Year 9 Home Group and in Music and Music Extension classes. Graduating from the University of Southern Queensland with a Bachelor of Creative Arts, Julianne completed a double major in Pipe Organ (Performance) and Mathematics. In the following year she completed a Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary). Whilst her first love is learning and teaching, Julianne feels privileged to have performed around the

world as a solo pipe organist, including in Germany, Hong Kong, San Francisco and St. Paul’s Cathedral, London. She has worked extensively with a range of ensembles including the Queensland Youth Symphony and Australian Youth Choir. Julianne values her co-curricular involvement as Accompanist for the Middle College Chorale and, most recently, as Repetiteur for the 2018 Sheldon College production of Legally Blonde.Julianne continues to maintain close connections with the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) working as District Review Panel Chair – Music Extension (Brisbane East and Rockhampton). In recent years, she has been seconded to State Panel – Music Extension, and has also worked as a District Panellist for Music. Julianne was also a member of the Music Extension syllabus writing team and the Arts Advisory Committee.

Vanessa has been fortunate to be inducted in the area of digital media, technology and ICT integration by International leaders such as Ian Jukes, Stephen Heppell and Alan November, furthermore she was certified by Harvard Graduate School of Education in Teaching to Standards with New TechnologiesShe has completed a Bachelor of Arts/Education (Computing) majoring in Software Design and Development. Vanessa has been working as a technology adviser, E-Learning Co-ordinator and ICT teacher in schools across Sydney and Brisbane.

With more than 12 years’ experience in various teaching environments, Vanessa is highly able to critically and theoretically analyse digital processes and products with a critical awareness of learning needs in the application of appropriate technologies. She is passionate about applying research and reflection in the process of innovation.Sheldon College is what keeps her here in Brisbane. She also completed a Graduate Certificate in Molecular Biology from the University of Queensland. Colleen was privileged to be the recipient of the Peter Doherty Award for Excellence in Science and Science Education and the Science in the Dome Award for her work in biotechnology education.Prior to coming to Sheldon College, Colleen was working with the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority, specialising in the quality assurance of assessment for senior subjects. Previously, she taught for over 20 years in State schools, holding the position of Head of Department Science,

Year Level Co-ordinator and Prefect Co-ordinator. Colleen is also the chief examiner for the external Biology syllabus and is a unit manager for the Queensland Core Skills Test.Colleen is excited to be continuing in the role of Head of Faculty Science this year and working with the Science Team and students of Sheldon College. She has always had a passion for science and believes science should be enjoyable and relevant to everyday life.

Jarrod continues this year at Sheldon College teaching Health and Physical Education in the Middle and Senior College. He continues the role of Head of Faculty across the 5-12 Curriculum. Jarrod holds a passion for the HPE field and believes strongly in teaching children holistically about HPE, not only focusing on the physical domain. Jarrod is most excited about the amazing facilities Sheldon College has to offer the students. The tartan track, pool, gym, ovals, cafeteria annex, hard courts and stadium courts bring wonderful opportunities for all students at Sheldon College in the Health and Physical Education arena.

With a keen interest in all sports, Jarrod has specialist knowledge within triathlon, AFL, golf, strength and conditioning, athletics, and netball. He has represented Queensland in a number of the above mentioned sports and hopes this experience will assist students to strive for their goals within the sporting arena. In recent years, Jarrod has managed the introduction of the Sheldon College Triathlon Development Academy into the College program. This program is the first of its kind in Australia and continues to forge wonderful opportunities for students in this arena of sport.

Jarrod has spent time previously in the fitness industry where he was a personal trainer, gym instructor, and group fitness instructor. He is highly motivated in assisting to create healthier and more rewarding lifestyles, and hopes he can pass this knowledge on to students.

Jarrod’s enthusiasm and goals for Sheldon College span further than just sporting. He loves being involved in all facets of Sheldon College, and looks forward to making a positive difference in the life of every child.

Leon joined Sheldon College after his arrival in Australia in 2010 to teach Mathematics mainly in the Senior College. He was born and educated in South Africa. He first taught in a public school for three years in Stanger (South Africa) and then he taught in a bilingual private school for two years in Bedfordview (Johannesburg). This year Leon will teach Mathematics B and C to Year 11 and Year 12.

He is excited about the challenges and opportunities that this year will bring both for himself and the students in his classes. He feels that Sheldon College is a really special place where the students are afforded the opportunity to develop to their true mathematical potential and for some to even

carry on their Mathematics studies past Year 12. Leon is passionate about Mathematics and he is keen to see more students discover the wonderful exciting world of Mathematics.

Leon is looking forward to this year working with the dedicated and enthusiastic members of the Mathematics Faculty.

Amanda strongly believes that all children are capable of learning, if they have the proper motivation and direction from their teacher.

With 25 + years’ legacy in the education industry with roles covering the Department of Education, Brisbane Catholic Education, Independent Schools Queensland and Registered Training Organisations. Amanda has a wealth of pedagogical and technical proficiency to bring to the

organisation from experiences as Business and IT teacher/trainer, Head of Faculty of Business and IT, ELearning Manager, Learning/Head of Faculty of Senior Schooling, VET and Career Pathways Co-ordinator. With experience in both primary and secondary education, Amanda can provide schools with advice on delivering IT curricular in a range of school environments. As a future focused educator and experienced teacher, Amanda is accustomed to the particular challenges and opportunities facing Queensland schools. Amanda continues to transform learning in schools by developing and supporting their 21st century learning environments. Amanda is excited to bring her expertise and experience into Sheldon College and looks forward to developing future focused students.

Head of Instrumental MusicGradDip(FET) DipMus(QCON) David Adelt is extremely excited to be leading the wonderfully talented staff in our Instrumental Music department. He has had more than 25 years’ experience as an instrumental music teacher in both the State and Private systems with extensive experience in conducting percussion ensembles jazz ensembles, concert bands and musical bands. David has presented talks on “Teaching Percussion” at both state and national conferences and has adjudicated at national music festivals. He is an examiner for the Australian Music Examination Board on both percussion and drum kit and has an extensive and varied performance career including work with professional shows, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra, Queensland Pops Orchestra (principal

percussionists for past 20 years), the State Orchestra of Victoria, Wellington Symphonia, “X Collective” cabaret ensemble, big bands and corporate bands.

David has been working at Sheldon College since 2012 and has developed the percussion program to now include over 60 students with 2 drumlines and 4 percussion ensembles. The senior ensembles have travelled to both Sydney and Melbourne to take part in the Australian Percussion Eisteddfod and have won a number of national titles for both percussion ensembles and drumlines. Our senior drumline have developed a reputation for being one of Australia’s best drumlines and therefore receive regular invitations to perform around Brisbane. This reputation has seen them become the drumline for the Brisbane Bullets home games. This year David will also be conducting the Big Band and the orchestra for the College musical, “Legally Blonde”.

David is looking forward to further developing the instrumental music program with an emphasis on Recruitment and Retention and building a program which has Relevance for our students by choosing Repertoire which is challenging yet Rewarding.

One area of focus for Carl is the development of creativity and innovation through some exciting projects this coming year. He brings a passion for and knowledge in the area of Divergent Creativity, and is excited about implementing some strategies to develop students’ potential.

Outside the classroom, Carl’s interests in design, electronics and flight come together in his passion for designing, building and flying remote control aircraft. He has also played Indoor Hockey in the New South Wales State Championships, and enjoys his sports coaching.

Kayleigh graduated with an Honours degree in Commerce and pursued her passion for teaching by continuing her learning journey and completing a Post Graduate Diploma in Education (cum laude). She has had the opportunity of teaching and lecturing in various international environments where she was involved in teaching Commerce based subjects, as well as getting involved in wider school life. Kayleigh has been involved in the coaching of school sports and other extracurricular activities including the organisation of marine conservation trips, and participation in charity hiking events and fundraisers. She is focused on student-centered learning and strives to build positive relationships with her students, ensuring they reach their full potential both

inside, and outside of the classroom and follows the personal philosophy “don’t watch it happen, make it happen”.

In 2018, she is excited to be continuing her role within the English faculty. She feels that the dynamic and vibrant learning environment at Sheldon College is an inspiring place to work and learn.

Fiona embraces her need for travel as it creates experiences outside the comfort zone and inspires a life of learning. Jacob has channelled a passion for music into his studies, completing a Bachelor of Music and a Masters of Music Studies at Griffith University’s Queensland Conservatorium of Music. He has also completed degrees in Education and Religious Education from Australian Catholic University. During his studies, Jacob was active as a private voice, piano, and music theory teacher, whilst also serving as the drama teacher for Brisbane Performing Arts Academy, where he adapted and directed several productions, He currently performs internationally with The Australian Voices, and applies these skills to his work with ASTA and the Sheldon Musical.

He also holds Certificates in Fitness, Nutrition, and Strength and Conditioning. Mathew is an enthusiastic learner who has a diverse range of interest sincluding touch football, golf and cycling, along with drawing and technology.

Mathew continues this year at Sheldon College teaching Middle and Senior College Health and Physical Education along with Senior Health. He also continues the role of Home Group teacher of 10B. Mathew is looking forward to building strong relationships with his colleagues, students and their parents. Mr Lachlan Bell Email: [email protected] Specialist BMus(Perf)Lachlan has been performing music since age 4 and composing and teaching music since 2007. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music (Performance) in 2010 from Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, majoring in jazz guitar. Since then, Lachlan has engaged in projects from across the sphere of contemporary music, including corporate groups, big bands, small jazz groups and various session dates. Original music is where Lachlan’s passions lie, with over 15 independent releases featuring his playing and production skills. 2017 saw many highlights for Lachlan’s performance and educational careers. He directed the Australian band of Charles Esten (from the US TV Show Nashville), for his performances at CMC Rocks 2017, supporting the Dixie Chicks in front of a 20,000-strong audience.

He also performed at events such as Caloundra Music Festival and Mullum Music Festival with his band, His Merry Men. In an educational sense, Lachlan achieved a new personal highlight by taking on the role of music director of the 2017 Arts Academy Awards evening. He also produced a very successful first iteration of the Contemporary Music Concert. These personal achievements, coupled with outstanding performances from his students and ensembles throughout the year, left Lachlan feeling an immense sense of pride in his immediate department and the wider arts community. Lachlan is looking to take the momentum of 2017 and, along with the Arts team, create the best possible artistic experience for the students of Sheldon College in 2018.

Mrs Karen Bishop Email: [email protected] Resource Centre ManagerBEdKaren has now had the privilege of teaching for 18 years at Sheldon College fulfilling a range of roles. Much to her delight, Karen is now in her sixth year as the Manager of the Junior Learning Centre. Karen has a vision to create an epicentre of learning for students, teachers and the College community. Her goal is to connect our students to other students through organised activities which will be student-led and provide opportunities to share literature and develop leadership skills. Karen conducts lessons in the Junior Learning Centre, which through literature and digital resources connect the students to their classroom learning. Furthermore it is Karen’s vision to connect with the College and broader community and bring them into the Junior Learning Centre so students can benefit

from the wonderful community which is Sheldon College.

Jessica is a qualified Primary educator after graduating from Queensland University of Technology with a Bachelor of Education (Primary). She feels very privileged to have found a school which has the same beliefs as her own. Jessica believes that being a teacher is an incredible career and gives her the ability to help shape the future by creating students who not only enjoy school and learning, but love every aspect of it and strive to achieve more. Jessica’s previous teaching experience has given her an exceptional understanding of the development and pedagogy for all year levels. She has developed teaching and learning programs, which have been

built and adapted to suit her students’ strengths, goals and learning needs. Addressing their cognitive, affective, physical, social and aesthetic needs, creating an environment where they can learn and have fun while they are doing so. Prior to coming to Sheldon College, Jessica was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to work with Education Queensland on the Sunshine Coast and in Far North Queensland. Later taking up the opportunity to teach in Melbourne. Jessica is looking forward to working once again with the amazing teaching team at Sheldon College who share her love and passion for teaching and knows that 2018 will be filled with lots of Love, Laughter and Learning with many memories that will be cherished.

Toni is looking forward to another year of teaching within the outstanding Preparatory team at Sheldon College. She completed her Bachelor of Teaching and Bachelor of Education at Griffith University, with her major studies being completed in the areas of Early Childhood and Primary Art. Throughout her twenty years of teaching, Toni has taught across a range of Primary School and Early Education year levels as well as teaching Art Specialist lessons for Prep to Year 4 students. It is, however, the Early Years that inspire Toni so much. The joy of seeing the creativity and boundless energy of our younger members of Sheldon College, as they explore, discover, share and ultimately learn, is truly the essence that makes her career as an educator, so rewarding.

Toni is passionate about creating stimulating learning environments that encourage and support all children in her class to reach their potential. She believes that the school and family must work together in order to achieve the best outcomes, and looks forward to developing these precious relationships with the families of the children in her class this year.

She subsequently studied at The Victorian College of the Arts, participated in Master classes at the Australian Academy of Music, and at the University of Melbourne she completed her Masters of Music Studies in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy.Anna has been a finalist in several Opera Foundation Australia competitions; the Metropolitan Opera Study Scholarship, the National Opera Studio Scholarship, a recipient of the Lady Galleghan Encouragement Award and a winner of the Herald Sun Aria Competition.Anna has sung with the Concordia Foundation for the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, providing music therapy which is a special interest, as is building confidence in young singers.

He has taught English, History and ICT in schools out in Western Queensland before returning to Brisbane in 2012 where he has taught in the Bayside area for the past 6 years. In his time with the public sector, Paul has held numerous roles including; curriculum leader, the mentoring of junior teachers, the co-ordination of student leadership, and the coaching of teaching strategies around reading and writing in the junior and middle school areas.

Paul’s classroom is dynamic and welcoming, providing an environment rich in opportunities to engage with different learning styles and texts. He likes to make use of digital pedagogies to engage modern learners. Paul also values the importance of literature as both a means of understanding the world and in building a mastery of language.

Paul is incredibly excited to join the Sheldon family in 2018, bringing with him a firm belief in the holistic education of young men and women, growing the mind and the heart. He sees strong, supportive relationships as the cornerstone of a successful education, believing that everyone should have their strengths nurtured and valued in the classroom.

Miss Holly Champlin Email: [email protected] Early Learning Centre, Kindergarten TeacherBPsycSc GradDipEd(Early Years)Holly Champlin has a passion for Early Years education and is delighted to be teaching her sixth year of Kindergarten at Sheldon College, in 2018.

After graduating from the University of Queensland, with a Bachelor of Psychological Science, Holly moved abroad and became increasingly interested in Educational Psychology and Child Development. After returning to Brisbane, she enrolled in a Graduate Diploma in Education (Early Years) at the Queensland University of Technology and graduated with Distinction. Holly went on to teach Kindergarten, Upper Primary and Junior College, displaying her flexibility in teaching across year levels. She returned to teaching Kindergarten in 2013, when she joined the academic staff at Sheldon College.

Holly places great importance on building positive relationships with all her students and she enjoys working closely with Kindergarten families and the Early Learning Team to continually improve the Kindergarten program. She has a passion for teaching children’s yoga and incorporates elements, such as body awareness, meditation and gratitude into her teaching practice. Holly loves the energy and creativity of Kindergarten children and she is a firm believer that the experts of tomorrow are in Kindergarten today.

Miss Beth Cooper Email: [email protected] Junior College, Year 3 TeacherBA Hons (Dance/Drama) PostGradCertEd(Primary) Beth began teaching at Sheldon College in 2016. She started her Sheldon career teaching Year 4 and had a wonderful year with her Year 4 students, she met supportive colleagues and made fantastic memories. She didn’t stop making those memories as throughout 2017 her Year 3 class and colleagues helped her make even more. This year Beth will remain teaching in Year 3; she is once again looking forward to working with a creative team and the amazing opportunities this year will bring for all her students.

Beth moved to Australia in 2015 from the United Kingdom where she taught for four years and gained

valuable knowledge and experience, this year Beth will enter the 7th year of her teaching career and she couldn’t think of a better place in which to do this. Teaching in Australia had always been her lifelong ambition and as a motivated, hardworking and dedicated teacher aiming to further her teaching career, she looks forward to embracing another year of new cultural, innovative and educational experiences.

Prior to entering the teaching profession and completing her Post Graduate Certificate in Primary Education, Beth studied for her BA (Hons) Dance and Drama degree in the United Kingdom. The sense of achievement and personal pride was an emotion she wanted others to experience, therefore within the content of her teaching she strives to inspire, educate and entertain her pupils by giving them the opportunity to be expressive in a unique and positive way.

From early childhood Beth has played and more recently coached various sports. Her passion for sport and early desire to teach instigated her decision to spend two summers in America teaching swimming to children of different abilities, between the ages of one to fifteen. Camp Chateaugay was a life-changing experience and she was acquainted with people from contrasting social and cultural backgrounds which have informed her general knowledge of religion and beliefs.

Beth is a member of a local soccer team; she trains regularly and enjoys competing in the local tournaments. She is passionate, ambitious and thrives in an educational environment; she has a love for inspiring young people to be creative, to experiment and to achieve, and looks forward to what 2018 will bring.

She completed her studies with the Queensland University of Technology in 2010, graduating with a double degree in Creative Industries (Drama/Film and Television) and First Class Honours in Education.

Lauren believes that Arts Education offers students endless opportunities to understand and explore the world through imagination, critical thinking, cultural engagement, empathy, communication, creativity and problem-solving. Through interaction with the Arts within the classroom, Lauren aims to provide students with the opportunity to discover their full potential, ignite a love of learning and

an opportunity to develop the necessary skills to become active participants in a world beyond school.

Lauren is looking forward to again working with the energetic and conscientious students of Sheldon College. She is a passionate and enthusiastic teacher who is looking forward to sharing and creating many memorable moments with her students, this year.

This year Lauren is most excited to be the Year 12 Year Level Co-Ordinator. Born in the UK, Lisa graduated from The University of Nottingham with a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Mathematics. Realising her passion for education, she returned to university to complete a Post Graduate Certificate in Mathematics Education.

Now entering her 24th year of teaching Mathematics in the state and private systems, Lisa is as passionate about mathematics as ever. She feels it is essential that students develops a true

understanding of why mathematics works and how it can be applied to real world situations. Sheldon College offers its students the opportunities to achieve this through a variety of teaching strategies.

In 2018 Lisa looks forward to providing students with challenging and rewarding learning experiences, particularly in regard to motivating and extending students.

When not busy in the classroom or with her children whom also attend Sheldon College, Lisa also enjoys swimming, obstacle racing, reading and listening to music.

Mr Damien Durham Email: [email protected] College, Humanities and GeographyBEd(Secondary)Damien is delighted to be entering his tenth year with the Sheldon College family in 2018, as a teacher of Humanities, Senior Geography and Maths B. He has a love of learning, and hopes to impart this enthusiasm to the students in his classes. Damien believes that positive relationships are a key part of an effective learning partnership. He also has a passion for environmental issues and hopes to impart his desire to enact change for sustainable management of the planet onto his students.

Damien completed his Education Degree at Griffith University in 1996. After several years working in a middle management role in the retail industry, he decided to follow his heart and return to

teaching. Damien taught at Wynnum North State High School for five years across a range of subjects from Year 8 to Year 12 – Maths, English, Science, SOSE and Senior Geography. He also had fantastic opportunities to work as a Key Teacher in a Year 8 Sports Immersion class for 4 years, as Year 8 Welfare Leader in 2008, and at various times as Acting Head of Department, Humanities/Middle School. He has been privileged to teach Maths, SOSE and Geography across both Middle and Senior College since commencing at Sheldon in 2009.

In 2017, Damien began enhancing his own professional learning through the study of a Masters of Environment at Griffith University. He has been a District Panel Member for 8 years, and has also devoted the first week of the September holidays to QCS test marking since 2007. Additionally, he has had the opportunity to mark the 3, 5, 7, 9 NAPLAN writing task for the past 7 years.

Damien has a passion for sport and, since undergoing knee surgery in 2013, has become heavily involved with the sport of Triathlon. Damien has competed in a wide range of events from sprint through to Olympic distance triathlons, as well as a few 70.3 Half-Ironman events, including Sunshine Coast, Cairns and Port Macquarie. Damien still enjoys watching Rugby League and has recently retired from playing Touch Football.

Scott is very motivated to continue the great work that Amanda started in 2017. Sheldon Sport is in a very good place for 2018 however, part of our Sport Strategic Plan is to make sure the whole community keeps driving our students towards greater success. Scott’s plan for 2018 is to make sure the secondary students are very motivated to perform at their best as an individual and within a team.Scott has now been teaching for 16 years and is very privileged that eight of those years he has been

able to apply his craft at Sheldon College. With his children, Julius (Year 4), Charlotte (Year 2), Eli (Wonderland) at Sheldon, Scott is very much entrenched within the Sheldon culture. What is also very exciting is Scott’s wife, Elise has joined Sheldon College on a part time basis offering Occupational Therapy. Scott believes he is very lucky to work with the fantastic members of the Sport / HPE team and looks forward to 2018.

She is a qualified Primary educator after graduating from Griffith University with a Bachelor of Education. With seven years teaching experience, Emma is passionate about delivering learning experiences which excite and engage the students in her class. She implements hands-on learning and inquiry-based teaching, encouraging students to question and explore the world around them. This year Emma is excited to promote creative thinking in the classroom, asking students to be disciplined, imaginative, disciplined and collaborative.

Emma is excited to meet her Year Four class and their families and looks forward to a year full of love, laughter and learning.

Mrs Heidi Esdaile Email: [email protected] College, Music Specialist MEd GradDipPsych BEd(Music) AMusAHeidi has been interested in music since she was a child, and is extremely passionate about music education in the early years. She began playing the piano at a young age, and was involved in choirs and music workshops growing up. This involvement in music making has inspired her to help the young students at Sheldon to develop a love of music that they can build upon and enjoy in their future years.

Having recently completed her Masters of Education at Griffith University, Heidi is interested in the psychology of learning and how the Arts can be used to enhance brain function and creativity. This interest has also led to her studies in Psychology and has fuelled her current interest in brain

development and creative Arts education. Heidi hopes to continue her research in these areas in order to provide the most challenging and engaging Arts education possible for the capable young students in Junior College.

Heidi is looking forward to again working within both the classroom music and choir programs at Sheldon College.

She has taught across a variety of year levels and briefly in Malaysia and she is delighted to be taking Year 6 again this year. Prior to teaching, Anita spent many years as a learn to swim teacher, child care worker and outside school hours educator. She is very passionate about creating exciting and child-centered learning experiences for her students. Anita fosters a love of learning by engaging students with practical, hands-on activities.Anita is excited to watch her class grow and learn this year at Sheldon College.

Peter holds a music qualification from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and a teaching qualification from the University of Southern Queensland. He also has his TAFE qualifications to teach in both music fields and also in the area of Live Production Theatre and Events. One great passion that Peter possesses is a love of conducting and he brings 13 years as Conductor of the Queensland Youth Orchestra Wind Symphony as well as his current role as Musical director of the Redland City Bands. Peter has had the opportunity to share his passion for conducting, having

worked as a guest conductor in England, South Korea, Singapore and New Zealand. Peter brings over 30 years of teaching both instrumental and classroom music in primary, secondary and tertiary settings to us and he is looking forward to assisting with the future musicians of Sheldon College.

Piano Teacher, Sound and Music Technology SpecialistBMus(QCM)

David commenced his Piano studies at the age of 12. At age 15 he entered the Queensland Conservatorium of Music on scholarship for Piano & Bassoon, and then subsequently completed his Bachelor of Music degree in 1996. During his time at the Conservatorium he was fortunate to study with many international artists including Geoffrey Lancaster, Stephen Savage, Piers Lane and Nancy Weir. His lessons with Nancy make David a sixth generation student of Franz Liszt. He has won numerous competitions including the Barrier Reef Piano Competition and the Conservatorium Piano Concerto Competition. He has also performed piano works by Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe in concerts in the presence of the composer.

In recent years, David has also established his own production and recording studio. He has written music for short film, television and radio broadcasts as well as sound design for theatre productions, music for websites and multimedia performances. David’s passion for learning through creativity and innovation led him to work at the Queensland Academy for Creative Industries in its foundation year. In his “Creative Support” role, he was able to facilitate the use of music technology in the classroom, recording studio and also in live performances. Students had hands-on experience with ProTools, Sibelius, Logic, Garage Band and Ableton Live. David also co-created the “Electrofusion” ensemble – a blend of electronic, electric and traditional instruments with electronic manipulation.David is very excited about returning to Sheldon College this year in a dual role of Piano Tutor, and Sound and Music Technology specialist. He is thrilled to be working with a very talented and vibrant Arts team, and of course, the wonderful students of Sheldon College.

Hugh is looking forward to meeting his students as he believes that the formation of strong relationships is the fundamental step toward successful teaching.Educated in Durban, South Africa, Hugh began his teaching career in that country before moving to the UK in 2008. He spent eight happy years working in two boarding preparatory schools in Dorset

He still plays hockey and cricket when time allows. Hugh also has a passion for travel and has recently completed the ‘home run’ of continents visited.

Originally from Victoria, Jade has now called Queensland home for more than ten years. Jade feels privileged to be part of an organisation that strives for excellence and empowers its people to be innovative and creative. He has seen many changes during his employment and is excited by the future developments of the College.

Jade’s classroom is a dynamic environment, rich in materials and resources, and valuing all aspects of the curriculum. In recent years he has looked at ways of meaningful and purposeful integration of

learning technologies into the classroom. The advent of mobile technologies in the classroom has provided an abundance of new learning opportunities for teachers and students alike.

Jade believes that it is the relationships formed between teacher and student that are paramount to success. He seeks to form a deep understanding of each child as a person and as a learner, only from then can the real learning occur. He believes that all children are capable of excellence and it is a matter of unlocking their potential and providing opportunities for them to demonstrate.

Julie-Ann completed her Bachelor of Education with Honours at Queensland University of Technology, specialising in the area of Early Childhood. She is also a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society which recognises and celebrates outstanding academic achievement obtained

whilst studying at a tertiary level. A highlight in 2016, saw Julie-Ann awarded as a State recipient of the National Excellence in Teaching Award and as a result, she was shortlisted as one of 36 teachers Australia-wide to progress to the final round of the National Excellence in Teaching competition. In 2017, Julie-Ann was delighted to be once again nominated for this prestigious award.

Julie-Ann is passionate about the value of early childhood education and she creates a classroom environment that is both stimulating and engaging; where fun-filled learning is a daily occurrence. Frances joined the Sheldon College team in 2017. In her position as Careers Counsellor she empowers Senior College students on a socio-emotional and academic level, as they navigate the decision making processes in order to achieve optimum post-school transitions.

Frances completed her Bachelor of Secondary Education Degree in 2006 at the National University of Ireland, Galway, graduating with First Class Honours. She taught in a senior school context for 6 years in Ireland, before relocating to Brisbane in 2013 with her family, following time spent travelling the East Coast from Cape Tribulation to Sydney in 2009 and a subsequent inability to ‘recover’ from the wonderful Queensland climate and lifestyle. Having completed a ‘Master of Educational Studies;

Guidance & Counselling’ at the University of Queensland, Frances sought a position which would afford her the opportunity to instil in students a love of learning to support their whole career-span, while guiding them towards the best possible progressions for their individual needs. She is happy to have found this position at Sheldon College. The most rewarding part of Frances’ position is to share in the excitement of students as they achieve the goals they have assigned themselves and embark on the next chapter of their lives as empowered young individuals.

Josh completed a Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeship as a young man prior to completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Tasmania and subsequently a Graduate Bachelor of Education (Secondary) at Queensland University of Technology. Josh has taught in State, Anglican, Independent and Private Schools throughout Queensland, Tasmania and the United Kingdom and has held positions such as Year Level Co-Ordinator, Senior Tutor, Head of Year, Head of Department and Director of Boarding at various institutions. Josh firmly believes in student-centred, inquiry based learning in a calm and peaceful classroom environment and he

strives to create purposeful, lifelong learning underpinned by empathy and deep, conceptual thought.

A graduate of Griffith University Queensland Conservatorium (GUQC), Rachel is an accomplished singer and pianist. Having spent her undergraduate studies specialising in classical piano under the aegis of Charles Glenn, Rachel’s love of singing and musical theatre led her to move her area of focus into study of the voice and vocal technique.

Privileged to have worked under the mentorship of Dr Irene Bartlett at the Conservatorium, Rachel is passionate about helping young singers to establish not only a healthy contemporary technique, but a real sense of their strengths as individual and unique vocal artists. Rachel is also a member of staff at

GUQC where she serves as Specialist Lecturer in Contemporary Voice within the Conservatorium’s Open Conservatorium program.

A keen performer, Rachel enjoys working across many contemporary disciplines including Pop, Jazz and Musical Theatre. She has performed as a soloist with the Queensland Orchestra, was a Queensland finalist in the 2014 International Cabaret Competition, has recorded jingles for television and radio and has worked extensively as a backing vocalist. Her most recent project is a jazz inspired re-interpretation of Burt Bacharach/Hal David classics which can be heard on her website: www.benjaminsgirl.com.

Rachel is a very proud member of Sheldon College’s Performance Music department. She enjoys working with students across all three sub-colleges in her capacity as a choral director, engages with dedicated performing arts students in the ASTA excellence program and loves connecting with singers of all styles and skill levels in her day to day studio teaching. She serves as Vocal Director of both Sheldon College’s Arts Academy Awards and of the annual College Musical and is thoroughly looking forward to sharing “Legally Blonde” with the College community in 2018.

She is from Denver, Colorado, USA and moved to beautiful Brisbane in 2017. Julianne is looking forward to fostering a classroom community that cultivates critical thinking, promotes curiosity and inspires a lifelong love of learning. Her inquiry-based teaching approach allows students to personally invest in their work through hands-on, real world and exploratory learning experiences. Before completing her post-graduate studies in Education and beginning her teaching career, Julianne graduated with Honours from the University of Colorado with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. She was then selected in the top 10% of 50,000 applicants in the United

States to teach with Teach for America, a highly acclaimed national service corps committed to teaching in under-served regions to close the achievement gap. This allowed her to combine her passions for both education and social justice. While teaching in Denver, Julianne earned her Master of Arts degree in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Critical Pedagogy, graduating with Honours from the University of Colorado. She was also the recipient of an “Excellent Educator” award for providing access to content in innovative, differentiated and authentic ways. Before moving to Australia, Julianne taught English in Seoul, South Korea for one year and gained a deep love of Korean food. In her spare time, Julianne loves to travel and is looking forward to visiting her 30th country this year. She also enjoys reading, hiking and exploring the lovely Queensland beaches. David is also the teacher of Senior Chemistry and Biology. He has 25 years of experience, teaching at junior, secondary and tertiary levels in Australia and the UK. David’s experience in implementing the Science National Curriculum in the UK has given him a valuable insight into ensuring that the Sheldon College Faculty of Science continues to deliver an exciting, engaging and creative Chemistry programme for our Senior Students.Prior to joining Sheldon College in 2011, David was Head of Biology and Team Leader for Student Data Management at Canterbury College. He taught in both the Junior and Middle Colleges enhancing

teaching and learning in Science and Literacy. He also taught Biology, Chemistry and Multi-Strand Science in the Senior College.Before moving to Queensland, David held the position of Manager of Learning and Teaching and Head of Chemistry at Purbrook Park School, UK. David has also held positions in University education; at Oxford Brookes University as Senior Lecturer in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry and at The University of Queensland as Manager of Student Services.In the UK, David’s role saw him work with the staff and students of Purbrook Park School to implement the National Literacy and Numeracy Strategy across all curriculum areas. Starting with English and Mathematics, during his time there he introduced new learning initiatives into Science, Humanities, IT and LOTE subjects.At UQ, David was involved in an Inclusive Practice research project to produce a website to guide staff in enhancing student engagement across the University. He has also developed and facilitated programmes to support the transition of first-year students from both domestic and international backgrounds into university study.Through his teaching David plans regular opportunities for students to consider the wider moral, environmental and ethical side of each topic, which, in itself makes the work relevant and engaging. This year Jessica will be teaching Classroom Dance to Years 5 to12. She is looking forward to being a home group teacher for Year 12A.Jessica is excited to be once again involved in the vast extra-curricular and curricular activities that the college has to offer in the area of the Arts such as this year’s Senior College Musical ‘Legally Blonde’, Arts Academies, Just Dance, the ASTA Professionals program and the ASTA Dance Academy.

Jessica has extensive knowledge and experience of dance education in the areas of performance and choreography. She completed a Bachelor of Creative Industries, majoring in Dance and a Bachelor of Secondary Education majoring in English at QUT. Jessica has studied various styles of Dance including Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Contemporary and Hip Hop, and she has been involved in eisteddfods, competitions, musicals and ATOD examinations for Jazz, Tap and Ballet. She enjoys attending dance professional development days and dance lessons to help further her skills.

Jessica is looking forward to another promising year working with the students and staff at Sheldon College as the co-ordinator of Dance and a member of the Arts Team.

Brogan is a highly organised, self-motivated and dedicated young teacher. She is a former Sheldon College student who has joined the Sheldon College academic team this year. She completed her Bachelor of Education at Griffith University, and since then has developed her teaching skills in a combination of classrooms and co-ordination roles. She also completed a Certificate III and IV in Fitness, utilising these skills in a range of practical sports and fitness environments. Brogan is very excited to be teaching within the Physical Education faculty across the Middle and Senior years. With a love of fitness and sports training, she believes it’s crucial to model and instil a focus on health, physical fitness and activity in young people’s lives.

Brogan is looking forward to her new role as Year 7 Co-ordinator. Her aim is to build strong relationships with the students and parents of this cohort as well as Middle and Senior College students and to be part of the love, laughter and learning culture within Sheldon College.

I am very delighted to be entering into my 7th year at Sheldon College. After a variety of teaching experiences, working within the Before and After School Care, being an alumni student of Sheldon College and being a teacher within the Preparatory team, I am delighted to join team Kindergarten for 2018! I cannot wait to explore the fun and exciting pathways that Kindy has to hold.

After specialising within the field of Early Childhood, I am extremely excited to immerse myself into Kindergarten through the aspects of developing children’s social, emotional, physical and cognitive development. I thrive off of happiness and endeavour to embed this within my classroom each and

every time a child and their family enter our door.

2018 will be a wonderful year in Kindy Hutley and I cannot wait to become involved within the community that is, Sheldon College.

Scott completed a Human Movements Degree from the University of Queensland, graduating with honours. He then taught briefly at Cleveland State High School before obtaining his position at Sheldon College. Scott is now in his 15th year of teaching at Sheldon College. He originally started at Sheldon in 2001, however he lived overseas for 2 years teaching in England and travelling the world. He returned to Sheldon midway through 2006 after a brief stint in the Real Estate Industry.

Scott has had the unique experience of teaching across the whole of Sheldon College. He has taught Health and Physical Education from Preschool to Year 12, Science to Year 10 and Maths to Years 8,

9 and 10. Scott helped establish the Touch Football Club within the College, and will be coaching teams for the Primary and Secondary All School Touch Competitions. Scott also intends to coach Touch this year within the TAS GBC competition.

This year Scott is the Year 11 Co-ordinator and teaching Health and Physical Education from Years 5 to 11. Scott loves working at Sheldon College and looks forward to working with the students again this year.

Emily will continue in the tutoring program this year, looking forward to enabling students on a one to one basis achieve their own unique potential. She truly believes in making authentic connections with students to enable learning to occur. Emily is a qualified Primary educator, having completed a Bachelor of Education, majoring in Early Childhood Education at QUT. Recently she has also gained her ABC Cracking the Code qualification. Emily has worked in many educational settings, including public and private schools and at Aviation Australia, and has also taught yoga for over ten years. Emily is looking forward to 2018 at Sheldon. .

It is with great enthusiasm and anticipation that Colin embarks on his 12th year at Sheldon College. He has had the pleasure of seeing the College undergo unprecedented growth and seen 11 cohorts of wonderful students leave to make a life outside of this safe and nurturing environment. Colin knows that these students are well prepared for the challenges that they have faced (both from direct feedback and the wonderful successes that we have observed). He believes that the pastoral experiences that students share in home group play a major part in developing resilience and other life skills, so is thrilled to be a Year 7 home group teacher this year.As many of you will know, Colin has a PhD in Chemical Engineering as well as his teaching degree.

Although it is many years since he has practiced engineering, it gives him an authentic perspective when teaching in his specialty of digital technology. We are living in wonderfully dynamic times and Colin believes it is essential that all students have a sound understanding of how technologies work and are used.Outside the curriculum, Colin will be working with sporting teams in volleyball and soccer. This allows him to see the students from a different perspective and he takes great joy in watching the development of the young players. Colin will also be part of the team providing student access to tools and technologies outside of class time so that students can develop creativity and learn how science, technology, maths and arts are integrated to engineer solutions that provide a fundamental platform for our evolving culture.

Mr Gareth Jones Email: [email protected] SpecialistBMusic MMusStudies AMusA LMusA Gareth started piano lessons at age 7 and later took up the clarinet, trombone, guitar and most recently is learning the cello. Playing the piano has given Gareth the freedom to be creative and emotive, and has taught him a great deal about responsibility and discipline. He enjoys composition for piano and has recently recorded an album of original music.

Gareth moved to Brisbane in 1998 from Dubbo to study at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and started teaching the piano during his postgraduate studies. He was a finalist in the Queensland Piano Competition (2000) and adjudicated the Sunshine Coast Eisteddfod (2006, 2014, 2017). After completing a Masters degree at university with a focus on choral music, Gareth began teaching at

Sheldon College where he developed a new love and passion for teaching. He has an eclectic taste for music ranging from Mozart to 30 Seconds To Mars.

Gareth is looking forward to his fourteenth year at Sheldon College.

She is especially looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead and working with a wonderful team of teachers in 2018. Previous to Year 4, she has been privileged to teach in a Year 3 classroom for several years. She has also fulfilled the role of Learning Enhancement Teacher for the students of the Junior College. In this role, Tina supported students to achieve their full potential and provided programs to help this eventuate, through running the ELF, PAL and Literacy Club programs, along with in class support for teachers and students.Tina brings to the classroom several years of experience of working in the Junior College. During this

time, she has gained a broad understanding of the emerging curriculum and has kept up to date with recent events and initiatives, particularly the gradual implementation of the Australian Curriculum. Over the past few years she has been fortunate to have taken part in professional development in the area of Reading Comprehension, Writing and the teaching of Grammar, and she looks forward to implementing many of these strategies with her students. Tina has also taught Year 5 Maths, Science and Technology and Junior College Technology during her first year at Sheldon College, in 2001.

Tina will also be taking on the role of a Year 7 and Year 4 mum, as both her son and daughter continue their very important journey through the fantastic Middle and Junior College this year.

As both a teacher and parent, Tina firmly believe in the amazing educational experience that children are given at Sheldon College. She feels so privileged to teach in such a fulfilling and gratifying environment, where it is a pleasure to see children experience learning in a variety of ways. Helping each student grow and feel the positive power of success is a part of Tina’s role that she will endeavour to make a part of each interaction, remembering that ‘No two flowers bloom in exactly the same way’. Tina looks forward to being a part of her students’ journey and working with you all to make it a positive and enjoyable one.

Ms Melanie King Email: [email protected]/Senior College, English, Senior English, Modern History and Legal StudiesBA/BEd(Secondary)Melanie King is an experienced teacher who commenced teaching at Sheldon College in Term 2, 2017. Prior to this, she taught in the Queensland State Education system for over thirteen years, where she held various roles such as Acting Head of Department (English/Humanities), Years 9-11 Year Level Co-ordinator, QCS Administrator/Chief Supervisor and Legal Studies District Review Panellist. Melanie holds the dual degrees of Bachelor of Arts (English Literature) and Bachelor of Secondary Education (English/History) from the University of Queensland. She has extensive experience at the senior level, having taught a range of senior subjects with a particular focus on Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) subjects.

In 2018, Melanie will be teaching Senior English, Modern History and Legal Studies, as well as Year 8 English. She is also a Year 12 Home Group teacher. She is looking forward to working with all her students to help them achieve the best possible outcomes this year. Of course, a key part of student success comes from parental support and Melanie will actively partner with parents to ensure this success is within reach of every student.

The beginning of each year is the perfect opportunity to start afresh and make plans to get the most out of every experience while at Sheldon College. Melanie encourages all her students to work hard and embrace everything the College has to offer.

Miss Clara Liu Email: [email protected]/Senior College, Chinese LanguageBSc MA GradDipEd(Secondary) Ni hao and welcome to the Year of the Dog! Clara is thrilled for another year working with the dynamic English and Languages Education Faculty and she is looking forward to embracing new opportunities and navigating through the challenges in 2018. Having completed her Bachelor of Science degree in China, she came to Australia and graduated from the University of Queensland with a Masters of Arts and followed this with a Graduate Diploma in secondary education from the Griffith University. She was previously involved in the translation and interpreting industry, working in a wide range of contexts such as health care and legal practice. After two years as a NAATI accredited Mandarin interpreter, she decided to change her focus of career and indulge in Mandarin teaching.

Originally from Shanghai and living in Brisbane for almost 5 years, Clara has been exposed to a wonderful melting pot of race, languages and culture.

Clara sets high expectations for herself and of her students. She believes that every student is unique with different interests, learning styles and pace, and that each has the potential to learn a foreign language. She has the vision of assisting her students to join the community of Chinese language learners based on mutual respect, acceptance of all individual differences and to cultivate an appreciation for another culture other than their own. Clara has also been a Mandarin tutor at the Institute of Modern Languages (IML), UQ, for adult beginner courses as well as the high school enrichment program. She is very much looking forward to sharing and exploring lots of wonderful Chinese learning experiences with her students in a fun-filled and vibrant environment in 2018!

Mr Joshua Long Email: [email protected]/Senior College, Humanities and Ancient HistoryBed(Secondary: Humanities/HPE) Joshua Long is thrilled to be returning to the Sheldon College team in 2018 as the Year 10 Co-ordinator. Joshua completed his studies at Griffith University and holds a Bachelor of Education (Secondary) majoring in Humanities/History, and Health and Physical Education. Alongside this tertiary education he also holds a Certificate IV in Fitness. He is delighted to be the Year Level Co-ordinator of Year 10 and teaching across humanities and history. With an interest in history Joshua brings specialist knowledge to the College in the area of Ancient History. He is looking forward to being able to provide all of his students with a safe and enjoyable learning environment, whilst upholding the traditional values Sheldon College is well known for. Throughout his teaching career, Joshua has

proven himself to be a highly motivated individual who creates positive working relationships with students and members of the school community. Keeping this in mind, he is also the co-ordinator of the Duke of Edinburgh Award and is looking forward to working with students participating in this award. Joshua absolutely loves working with children across all ages and he is keen to share his enthusiasm and passion with his new classes. As well as, providing clear and relevant content in his subject areas, he also believes that it is important to equip students with the necessary skills to participate in an increasing technological and professional society to succeed beyond Sheldon College. Joshua believes teaching is the most exciting and rewarding job in the world and he is looking forward to teaching with a like-minded team. Mr Adam Lopez Email: [email protected] of Vocal StudiesMr Adam Lopez began singing at the age of three and after High School, went on to study Opera at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. He specialises in Classical, Jazz, Musical Theatre, Pop and Latin music styles and sings in Spanish, French, Italian, German, Latin and English. Mr Lopez also holds two Guinness World Records in the category of ‘Singing the highest vocal note by a male singer’. The record note is C sharp in the 8th octave (one note above the range of a piano!) This achievement has astounded audiences from all around the world leading him to perform in Australia, Japan, Spain, Italy, Korea and Hong Kong.

His professional performing experience also includes a string of sell-out concerts alongside Jazz legend James Morrison, performing with Kate Ceberano, Emma Pask, Mirusia Lowerse, a former

member of ‘The Ten Tenors’, Special Guest performer with ‘The Idea of North’ and Backing Vocalist for Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and the list goes on.

Apart from work on the stage, Mr Lopez has also acquired over 20 years experience in the Recording Studio as a Session Singer and as a Recording Artist. Some examples of work in the Recording Studio include TV and Radio Jingles for National Advertisements, over 100 International recording projects and 5 internationally released albums.

Mr Lopez has taught since 1998 and commenced at Sheldon College in 2001 and hasn’t looked back. He plans to continue song writing, recording albums and performing around the world in the professional Music Industry to then pass on his knowledge and experiences to his students.

Mr Damian Luci Email: [email protected]/Senior College, Science, Health & Physical EducationBEd(Phys Ed/IT)Damien completed his Bachelor of Education at the University of Ballarat. He has taught Physical and Health Education across a range of State schools in Victoria for over 10 years before packing up his family and moving to Queensland to begin a new adventure at Sheldon College.

Damien will bring experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and several leadership positions including Head of Department and Assistant Year Level Co-ordinator, to Sheldon and will endeavour to inject his enthusiasm and love of teaching and learning into all of his classes.

Having graduated from the Queensland Conservatorium with a Bachelor’s Degree in Jazz Piano, William comes from a contemporary musical background, and enjoys music in its many different forms.

Steven joined us at Sheldon College in 2016 as a specialist Media teacher. He started his career teaching English and Humanities in North Qld in 1999 where he met a colleague who shared a passion for writing and theatre production. After 3 years Steven returned to Brisbane to found a new theatre and media company with Brad Jennings called Markwell Presents Cinematic Theatre Company. Since 2004 the company has directed and produced 17 youth theatre production seasons of their own plays and have also worked with La Boite Theatre, Zen Zen Zo and the Qld Theatre Company to design and integrate live visual media for their main stage productions. Steven has 14 years professional experience working with young people in media and drama in

schools and theatre companies throughout Queensland. In 2018 he will be facilitating the junior ASTA FTV program and the integration of projection and LED screen media into the major arts productions during the year.

Deborah completed her Bachelor of Education (Primary) Degree and Postgraduate Certificate in Education in London, England. She then began her teaching career at the primary school she attended as a student. Since the start of her career Deborah has taught at schools in both the UK and Australia, over Years 1 to 5. Every year of teaching, brings a new set of memories and magical moments that make the next year even more exciting for Deborah. She is therefore keen to meet her new set of students and can’t wait

to support them on their journeys to achieve their goals, have ‘eureka moments’ and to grow and develop holistically. When she is not teaching, Deborah loves getting stuck into a good book, going for a run or spending time with her family.

She is a dedicated teacher with a passion for inclusive practice and education for all children particularly in the Early Years.She completed her Bachelor of Psychological Science in 2010 awarded from Griffith University whilst working in an early intervention setting for children with Autism. This passion and commitment to making a change in the lives of these children furthered her love for teaching and obtained her Graduate Diploma in Early Childhood Education in 2011 from Griffith University. From this experience as a qualified teacher leading an early intervention team she has developed a specialised skill set in understanding

differentiated learning practices, supporting individual learning needs and behaviour management for children on the Autism Spectrum.In May of 2015 she joined the Wonderland team at Sheldon College as the Lead Educator. This experience strengthened her commitment to providing experiences to encourage young children to be creative and be risk takers, enhance their learning and problem solving skills and realise their potential as confident and capable learners. She looks forward to helping make the Kindergarten experience an exciting and fun-filled adventure for our early learners and their families.

He is a former Sheldon College student, graduating in 2008. He completed his Bachelor of Education at Griffith University, and since then has developed his teaching skills in a combination of classrooms and leadership roles throughout the public sector. Through experience, Josh believes that the development of strong relationships with students and their parents is the key to successful teaching and learning. He is very excited to be teaching within the Physical Education faculty across the Junior and Middle years. With a love of sport and being a part of a team, Josh believes it’s crucial to model and instil a focus on health, physical activity and teamwork in young people’s lives.

She has always wanted to be a teacher and completed her Graduate Diploma in Education at the University of Queensland.Prior to beginning her teaching career, Kylie completed a Bachelor of Business Management and a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Queensland. Kylie is also a fully qualified Chartered Accountant and has worked for several professional accounting firms, including Ernst and Young in Brisbane. This has provided real world experience dealing with a diverse range of business entities, which she hopes to draw upon in her business lessons at Sheldon College. Kylie is looking forward to working

with the business students on their business ventures where students create products to sell at the markets.Kylie will also be teaching Humanities at Sheldon College and is passionate about her teaching career. A keen tennis player, Kylie will be involved with the tennis program this year at Sheldon. Kylie is very enthusiastic about teaching at Sheldon College and is looking forward to another fantastic year with the Sheldon College community.

Simon Merry is excited to be returning to Sheldon College in 2018. With a Bachelor of Music and a Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning, he has been a passionate and enthusiastic educator of music for 19 years. Simon began guitar tuition in 1988 and has performed nationally and internationally in various ensembles and genres, though Jazz and Flamenco continue to be his favourite styles to perform in. Simon also enjoys the thrill of learning and applying prior knowledge and skills to other instruments. Including ukulele, banjo, electric bass and drumkit. Prior to working at Sheldon College, Simon taught at Moreton Bay College for 10 years in various roles in the Music department including Acting Director of Music. He has also taught Music at various schools in

Brisbane and Melbourne.2018 will see Simon teaching academic Music, studio guitar lessons, leading the Middle College Guitar Ensemble, and a Sheldon College Rock Band. He is energised and excited about getting involved in many facets of college life, and is looking forward to developing and building on the positive relationships that he has established with staff, students and parents already.

Danielle is excited for another year at Sheldon College. She will be teaching Middle and Senior College Mathematics. Danielle began her teaching career in Darwin at a private co-educational school comprised of Darwin locals, as well as International students and students from remote Aboriginal communities. In 2015 Danielle relocated to Brisbane to be with her husband who is studying to become a doctor. Prior to working at Sheldon College, she taught at a private all boys school in the Northern suburbs. Danielle has a love for teaching Mathematics and firmly believes that all students can achieve their full potential through hard work and dedication. She is aware that students can sometimes feel

uneasy in the Mathematics classroom so it is her aim to create an encouraging learning environment where students feel supported and stimulated and are never afraid to ask questions. Danielle is looking forward to creating many wonderful memories with her students while continuing to grow as a teacher.

Chris left a successful teaching spell in the UK to emigrate back to his birthplace; Queensland. Chris joined Sheldon in 2010 and will be in his tenth year of teaching and still teaching with the same enthusiasm as when he first began. After teaching secondary Maths in England Chris qualified to teach in Queensland and became a member of the Sheldon College team. His teaching philosophy is based around creating engaging lessons, challenging his students, and active, impactful learning. Chris’ teaching background saw him heavily involved in professional development, gifted and talented policy and technology in the maths classroom. He believes that Maths is all around us and realises the importance of linking education to the real world. 2018 will see some of Chris’s initiatives

put in place to promote Maths and its pedagogy in the Middle College. Outside of teaching Chris enjoys several sports but his passion for soccer is deeply ingrained. Chris is looking forward to working together with students, colleagues and their families alike for a wonderful year ahead, challenging and inspiring the future.

Sophie is delighted to be teaching Year 1 again this year. Sophie has a Bachelor of Education (Primary) degree from QUT and taught for Education Queensland before joining the Sheldon College family in 2002. She has taught at schools in the UK whilst travelling and whilst having a family worked part time for Griffith University conducting lectures, tutorials and workshops for Bachelor of Education Undergraduates. Prior to returning to Sheldon she taught in a wide range of year levels in State Schools across the Redlands District and found this very rewarding. She returned to the Sheldon College family in 2014.

Sophie believes that it is a teacher’s responsibility to focus on the success of each student as an individual to ensure they excel in their learning and life skills development. In 2017 Sophie was appointed as a Pedagogy Coach within the Primary Team. Candace studied at Queensland University of Technology and completed a double degree in Information Technology (Software Architecture) and Business (Banking and Finance). Candace then went on to work in the IT industry before deciding to complete a Graduate Diploma of Education at UQ. Candace believes that as a teacher she has an important role to help mold young minds and make her students of today successful people of tomorrow. Candace will be teaching Digital and Design Technology across many different year levels as well as Business classes in Senior College. She believes that Information Technology industries have an important place in the future of the workforce, many jobs that will appear in these industries do not exist today.

After 9 years, Meagan transferred to the Logan district, before coming to work at Sheldon College. She has extensive experience teaching across the Early Years, particularly Prep and Year One. Meagan is extremely passionate about embracing technology in the classroom, and loves providing opportunities to modify and redefine

Her commitment is to ensure that the Senior Learning Centre remains pivotal in the academic and College community and that the students are offered a welcoming, relevant, technology rich, first class library service. Krista will be well supported by Mr Joshua McHugh who is teaching Health and Physical Education in the Junior College.

In the role of Acting Head of Primary Sport Krista will be responsible for everything sport- related from Prep to Year 6. She will be concentrating on strengthening the pathway from Prep to Year 6 in the

different sports that Sheldon offers. Krista looks forward to working very closely with the coaches, students and parents throughout the Junior TAS competitions and carnivals to make sure the students are enjoying themselves and celebrating success.

Mat is entering his lucky thirteenth year as a teacher at Sheldon College and he still gets a buzz every time he walks into a classroom of Sheldon students. During this twelve years, he has worked with students from Year 3 to 7 as a classroom teacher and for the last five years as a Maths and Science specialist in the Middle College.

Mat’s philosophy of teaching and learning is ‘if it is to be, it is up to me’ and this is a mantra that you may hear his students chanting on a regular basis. He strives to foster a growth mindset within all his Maths and Science students. He understands the need for balance between the pastoral and

academic needs of his students. He also has a strong awareness and understanding that if learning is to be meaningful then students need to be having fun while working to their highest standard. He has a particular interest in immersing his students into the world of lateral or out of the box thinking so that they are able to think divergently in order to maximise their learning potential.

Vanessa has had extensive experience teaching children from babies to students in Year 12 through her work as a Learn to Swim Teacher for five years. Vanessa is a keen and active sportswoman and

still plays competitive hockey and touch football. Since her arrival, Vanessa has continued to be impressed by the standard of facilities offered at the College and is looking forward to providing the quality of teaching for which Sheldon College is renowned. Throughout the last thirty years she has assumed various roles within each school that she has taught. The most precious moments she carries with her are the ones that she spends with her students and with her classes.Over her last eighteen years at Sheldon College Cathy has been excited by the amazing new directions in the Visual Art Faculty. As well as a vibrant and creative curriculum that caters for, and explores the various nature of the inner artist, the Visual Art department has grown to cater for the different needs of the artist in the co-curricular arena. From Junior Art Workshops to Middle College Workshops and

ASTA, the department offers students the ability to work directly with industry artists that Cathy believes is both invigorating and necessary in fostering tomorrow’s artists.Cathy’s other passion is her Wearable Art Ensemble, working with a variety of students to create exciting, and to say the least, unusual fashion. This Ensemble has been very successful taking out both State and National Titles.With exciting times ahead with further exploration into the digital world, she is looking forward to another year teaching at Sheldon College and believes that the College is truly a place that reflects the following quote:

Anthony joined Sheldon College in April, 2016 as part of the English and Humanities team in the Middle College. His journey to Queensland commenced in Ballarat, Victoria where he trained and after graduating from ACU, Anthony worked on Tasmania’s west coast. After leaving Australia, the next 18 years of his career would then be spent in the UK, teaching throughout the diverse areas of London. It is here where Anthony held various leadership positions including Deputy Principal and Head of School. Living in the UK did not however, dampen his enthusiasm for Australian Rules Football, Cricket and all things sport! Anthony brings to Sheldon a keen desire to develop a love of learning in each of his students and the belief that learning does not cease at the end of the school day.

Sarah gained her Bachelor of Education with Honours from Gloucestershire University, England. She then spent eight years teaching Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 at Primary Schools in Hampshire and Somerset. After moving to Australia thirteen years ago, Sarah worked in many local state and independent schools as a supply teacher.

Sarah prides herself on creating a stimulating and nurturing environment in which each child’s interests and abilities are recognised and valued. She believes that developing positive relationships with students and their families is a fundamental aspect of quality teaching and learning. Sarah is committed to developing her own skills and knowledge and was honoured to be a state recipient of the 2017 ASG National Excellence in Teaching Awards. Emily Smith is a graduate of the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University, with a major in Advanced Flute Performance under the tutelage of Gerhard Mallon. Emily has won numerous awards including The James Carson Memorial Prize and the 4MBS Ross Peters Chamber Music Prize. Additionally, she is a member of the Golden Key International Honours Society. Emily was a member of the Queensland Youth Orchestras from 2002 - 2014, in the Queensland Youth Symphony from 2010 and Principal Flute from 2013-2014. She has also performed as Principal Flute with the Queensland Philharmonia, Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra, Queensland Wind Orchestra, Queensland Mandolins, Queensland Conservatorium Symphony and Wind Orchestra, and many

other community organisations in Brisbane and surrounding areas. Internationally, Emily has participated in programs including Charterhouse Summer Music School with Susan Milan, Netherlands Flute Academy with Emily Beynon and the Oxford Flute Summer School with Michael Cox. Emily is in demand as a Flute specialist and has provided performances, tutelage and workshops in both Independent and State Schools across the state.

Jasper has taught at a number of schools, colleges and Universities in England, including Cambridge Anglia Ruskin, Middlesex and the University of East Anglia. He is a Fellow of the London College of Music and one of their international examiners.

As a performer, Jasper has toured for Rural Arts East and played on countless sessions, jingles, TV and radio shows. He has performed throughout the UK in venues as diverse as car showrooms and

supermarket precincts through to Hyde Park, Wembley arena and the National Exhibition Centre.

Sarah Sullivan has been teaching at Sheldon College since 2006. After taking leave in 2016 to spend time with her new baby boy, Sarah was thrilled to return to the College to join the amazing Year 1 team in 2017. Sarah has also had the pleasure of teaching Kindergarten and Year 2 at Sheldon College, including three years in the role of Team Leader. She is very excited about the many wonderful experiences that 2018 will no doubt bring.

Sarah is a qualified Primary educator after receiving a Bachelor of Education – Primary degree from Griffith University. She completed a major in Music as part of this degree and therefore thoroughly

She was very honoured to be a member of the Sydney Olympic Marching Band that performed in the Opening Ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympics Games and she was also very fortunate to accompany our talented Sheldon College musicians to Beijing in 2008. Sarah has experience teaching in both lower and upper primary classrooms and aims to provide diverse learning experiences that encourage the children to develop academically, physically, emotionally and socially in a supportive learning environment. She believes in a holistic education where children can grow and discover through learning. Sarah attributes successful teaching and learning experiences to effective communication and community partnerships as well as catering for individual needs and interests. Sarah is passionate about teaching and firmly believes that an excellent education is one of the greatest gifts that we can provide for our children. When she is not teaching, Sarah enjoys spending time with her family, playing Netball, listening to music, cooking, reading and dabbling in home renovation projects. He has extensive teaching experience, having taught for over 39 years. Neal’s areas of expertise include English, Drama and Humanities.After being heavily involved in Theatre and Drama for almost twenty years, directing numerous school musicals and Year 12 Drama Course Productions, Neal returned to his first love: English. Neal was responsible for developing Sheldon College’s initial Curriculum Documents for Years 9 to 12 English. He is passionate about classic literature and films, and is delighted to be able to share this passion with Sheldon College students.

Neal has also been involved in a variety of extra-curricular activities during his teaching career, taking on the role of Work Experience Co-ordinator for fifteen years, and coaching students in a variety of sports.In order to hone his literacy skills, Neal recently completed an Advanced Diploma in Editing and Publishing with Australian College.Neal’s interests include animal welfare, etymology, Tarot, cycling, music, reading and learning about information technology.2018 is Neal’s eighteenth full-time year at Sheldon College.

Before commencing with Sheldon College I had previously been employed by the Department of Education as a manager of the Creative Generation Arts programs and events, and have worked professionally as an actor, musician, writer and producer in the Arts sector in Australia and overseas since the early 1990’s. Notable career highlights include signing with ABC music as a children’s songwriter, headlining my own cabaret show “Songs for Sarah Connor” at festivals across Australia,

In my role as Performance Manager I oversee all the internal and external performances and Arts-related events at the College. I am a link to industry; facilitating professional artist visits and workshops, arranging students to undertake professional gigs, liaising with casting directors and event producers for audition opportunities, mentoring young artists, and preparing students for tertiary and industry pathways. I run the Theatresports (improvised performance) program and have helped build a culture of risk-taking on stage across the College. I also teach within the Australian School of the Arts and regularly visit Junior, Middle and Senior classrooms to surprise, engage and challenge students. I also deliver ESL lessons for our inbound Chinese and Japanese tour groups.

I look forward to a creative 2018 and helping students become “the best version of themselves” by engaging imaginations and encouraging an improvising mindset.

These students are at a crucial stage in their lives, where they experience rapid growth and intellectual and emotional changes that require learning environments specifically structured to cater to their needs.Lisa completed a Bachelor of Applied Science at the University of Queensland and a Graduate Diploma of Education at QUT. She worked in the State Education system for several years before working at Sheldon College from 2000 – 2004 as Head of Sport and HPE. After leaving to start a family she moved into higher education, teaching at TAFE and then Griffith University for the past 10 years. During this time Lisa has specialised in Middle Years Education and assessment and taught pre-service teachers

across multiple curriculum areas, with particular emphasis on Science and Mathematics intervention. She has been involved in the Junior Secondary Professional Development programs, delivered to teachers and Principals across schools throughout Queensland. This is Maree’s fifteenth year at Sheldon College. She started teaching in the Middle College and then moved down to the Junior College where she taught the Year Three Extension class for eight years. This year she is excited about teaching Year Six English/Humanities again.Maree graduated from Griffith University having completed a Bachelor of Primary Education. She has experience teaching all year levels in the primary setting. Maree has a particular interest in the development of higher order thinking skills.

She firmly believes in knowing her students, who they are, where they come from, how they fit within society and how this impacts upon her planning for teaching and learning. Maree is dedicated to creating a success-oriented classroom, which envelops students with positive experiences and success, where new and expansive patterns of thinking are nurtured and students are encouraged and challenged to learn together.

Mrs Rebecca Woolnough Email: [email protected] College, Year 2 TeacherBEdRebecca is entering her thirteenth year of teaching and is delighted to be teaching Year 2 again this year. Since she graduated from The University of Newcastle Rebecca has enjoyed teaching and coaching across all Year levels. Rebecca has a special interest in Design and Digital Technology. She is very passionate about creating authentic learning experiences, facilitating a learning environment that encourages critical and creative thinking. Rebecca fosters a love of learning by building students confidence and resilience. Rebecca is excited to meet her Year 2 treasures and their families and looks forward to a year full of love, laughter and learning.
