SentrixTechnology for Emissions Reporting Complianceand Proactive Seal Monitoring

Two critical objectives are always on the minds of compressor operators: environmental compliance and machine optimization. Cook Compression has introduced innovative gas flow measurement technology to help them achieve both.

Cook Compression’s new Sentrix™ flow measurement technology provides high- accuracy, easy-to-use solutions for measuring and tracking packing case vent flow ingas compressors. Sentrix technology is available in two configurations to suit specific gas monitoring needs: portable analyzers for periodic, manual measurement of gas leakage and inline meters for continuous, automatic collection of flow data.

Both configurations utilize mass flow technology with accuracy of ±1% reading, ± 0.5% full scale (at calibrated conditions). With 100:1 turndownand flow ranges from 0.01 to 559 SCFM [0.01 to 950 NCMH], Sentrix metersand analyzers measure a wide flow range with superior sensitivity in extreme low and high flow conditions. Units feature automatic pressureand temperature compensation and are capable of measuring multiplegases without the need for re-calibration.

Compliance Made EasySentrix technology simplifies emissions reporting com-pliance by providing precise, direct flow measurementas mandated by US EPA Greenhouse Gas ReportingRule: Subpart W (40 CFR Part 98). The high accuracy ofthermal mass flow measurement satisfies BAMM (BestAvailable Measurement Methods) requirements and isthe only technology capable of measuring extreme lowleakage from packing cases.

Flow information is easily accessible for reporting andanalysis. Data captured by the portable analyzer can be stored in the unit and downloaded to a PC or USBstorage device, while data from the meter is transmitted to user systems through an easy-to-use interface.

Improve Seal PerformancePrecise measurement of leakage through the packing case vent also provides an opportunity to monitorthe performance and condition of rod packing.

Increasing leakage is a warning of packing wear. Early detection allows operators to plan for repairs andpractice condition-based maintenance. Precise, low-flow sensing also provides reliable and accurate datafor comparing the effectiveness of various case designs and packing options.

Simple, Gas-Specific CalibrationSentrix inline meters and portable analyzers are calibratedfor a specific gas composition and are supplied with easy-to-specify, pre-set calibrations. Calibrations are available formost gases, including nitrogen/air, hydrogen, propane, methane and carbon dioxide. Sentrix portable analyzers arepre-calibrated for six user-specified gases and calibrationsmay be selected in the field.

Built for ReliabilitySentrix analyzers and meters are built for durable perform-ance and designed for ease of use. Units deliver reliable, clog-free operation, even with lubricated machines. There are no moving parts and both portable and inline versions are fitted with coalescing filters to prevent fouling. Portable analyzers feature high-resolution, touch panel displays for convenient operation.

Accurate Measurement of Packing Case Leakage Pinpoints Solutions

Accurate flow measurement is critical for emissions reportingcompliance and for proactive monitoring of packing condition. However it can also play an essential role in identifying leakage problems, their costs and the relative value of proposedsolutions.

A transmission plant in the Four Corners region was experiencing significant gas leakage from packing cases in an Ingersoll Rand RDStwo-throw compressor. However, maintenance personnel had no reliable way of measuring how much gas was escaping. They weretherefore unable to determine the severity of the problem, its costs, orthe relative value of repairs or upgrades required to reduce leakage.

Plant personnel contacted Cook Compression to evaluate leakage problems and recommend a solution.

Assessing the ProblemAccurate flow measurement was the first critical step (see Sentrix™ Technology article in this issue).

The Cook team used a high-accuracy thermal mass flowmeter to measure leakage rates. To properly measure the pipeline quality methane from the compressor, the flowmeter wascalibrated for methane, propane and ethane mix.

News and Information from Cook Compression 2nd Quarter 2012

Distance piece measurements were taken on Unit 1 with the compressor in static (pressurized) state. OnUnit 2, packing case vent measurements were taken in static (pressurized) state and with the compressorrunning (fully loaded). Due to shutdown concerns, measurements were taken only on Cylinder 1 of Unit 2.

The table 1 shows the results of the flow measurement study.

Evaluating the SolutionThe study determined that the operator was losing over $98,000 per year in gas leakage. This data allowed maintenance personnel to accurately compare the savings of the proposed solution.

Cook Compression recommended an upgraded rod ring set featuring a high-performance pressurebreaker, seal rings and vent ring. The cost analysis using estimated information showed that a paybackcould be realized in 23 months for Unit 1 (static), 4 months for Unit 2 (static) and 4 months for Unit 2 – cylinder 1 (running).

The customer followed Cook Compression’s recommendations and has achieved the cost savings predicted. The flowmeter was an essential tool that provided the data necessary to quantify not only the cost of the problem, but the value of the solution.
