IntroductionOne of the defining values of Islamic education should include the principles and values of Islam with a focus on human values in discussion, tolerance, moderation, peace and volunteering.

Many schools are often challenged to find suitable Islamic books that ideally meet these values.

All books published by Weekend Learning Publishers focus on establishing a connection between deen and dunya, with teachings drawn from the Qur’ān and Sunnah. The Islamic Studies series is no exception. Providing a clear understanding of the teachings of the Creator and His Messenger is the cornerstone of all Islamic Studies books. This series of textbooks aims to create a society well grounded in the spiritual and ethical call of Islam.

A good textbook would fail to deliver without a curriculum to back up the book. Similarly, a good curriculum would be useless without textbooks or lessons to accompany the curriculum. We do not want your Islamic Studies program to suffer for the lack of a meaningful curriculum. A curriculum is like radar or a compass; without radar or a compass, the ship sails aimlessly.

With the Weekend Learning series of Islamic Studies books, you will find a curriculum and topics in the books that support the curriculum. The curriculum includes topics based on the Qur’ān, Hadith, nabis and rasuls, aqidah, fiqh, seerah, Islamic history, past communities, companions, ideology, ethics, and so forth. Many topics of contemporary interest are covered, such as dating, male-female relationships, Muslim American identity, Islam in the workplace, racism, and Islamic finance. The lessons in the curriculum are presented in a logical, systematic manner to suit the teaching needs of Islamic schools. Topics have been selected based on age, grade, and students’ learning level.

All topics are based on general Sunni principles and interpretations. The lessons are true to the teachings of Islam. If a fact cannot be verified by the Qur’ān or Sunnah, it has been excluded. The teachings of many historical incidents involving nabis and rasūls are carefully presented by eliminating biblical bias and remaining true to the Qur’ān. Students will gain an enlightened and proper understanding of what the messengers did and did not do. All lessons in the Weekend Learning series were reviewed and approved by in-house and national and international authorities.

Books from the Weekend Learning series will help make teaching productive and resourceful. All lessons are presented in distinct units, and they are arranged thematically. This will help teachers focus on the theme of a unit and make teaching easier and rewarding.

Most teachers in Sunday schools are volunteers. Many do not have formal teaching experience. They do not have time to prepare lesson plans or research topics before each class. The chapters in the textbooks are designed specifically for the learning needs of each grade level. There is no need for teachers to tone down a lesson or otherwise alter it in order to make it relevant to the class. We have already done the work for them. Each chapter is structured, resourceful, and easy to teach. The length and depth of each lesson is age- and grade-appropriate. All lessons are tailored for classes 50 to 60 minutes in length.

Homework is necessary to ensure student learning is reinforced. Therefore, homework assignments are included at the end of each chapter. Teacher can assign the homework to be completed in the textbook itself, or provide printed copies to students. The handouts can be printed from a USB flash drive. All the homework assignments, exam questions, and many other resources are included on the flash drive. All files on the flash drive are in PDF format and MS-Word format. One flash drive contains the necessary materials for all Islamic Studies lessons.

For details, see page 38.

Homework is included in the textbooks at the end of each lesson. These homework assignments should suffice for most schools. However, additional workbooks are available for each level of Islamic Studies books. Each student workbook contains many quizzes and activities that are not included in the textbook. These review questions and exercises will provide a rewarding and enriching learning experience. They will also assist with the meaningful integration of the material in the textbooks. The workbooks will also enhance students’ test-taking skills and prepare them for advanced learning.

For details, see pages 32–33.

The Islamic Studies: Kindergarten book is intended for children ages 4–5. Today, Kindergarten is like the new “first” grade—where children learn a lot but also have fun. The goal of kindergarten is to encourage and build good feelings about school and learning. Students begin with a very basic curriculum. The book emphasizes the most important academic activity—developing literacy through reading and writing.

Islamic Studies for Kindergarten begins by building familiarity with key written and spoken words. The objective is to introduce the basic ideas of Islam through various activities—writing, coloring, cutting, gluing, sorting, listening, singing, and sometimes simply playing.

Islamic Studies: Level 1

The Level 1 book is intended for children ages 5–8 who can read short sentences and write short phrases. This is their first year in a formal Islamic class. Typically, these students are in first or second grade.

All lessons are presented thematically in distinct units. The Level 1 book introduces students to the fundamentals of Islam. These students have very little or no knowledge about Allah, Islam, the Qur’an, and the Messenger. The lessons in this book attempt to walk students through the basics of Islam. Assuming students have no prior knowledge, the book takes the first step toward formal curriculum-based learning. The goal here is to keep it simple and enjoyable, yet informative. Each chapter provides the Islamic foundation appropriate for this age group. The concepts learned in this book will be covered in greater detail in future grade levels.

Comprehensive Resource Package for Enrichment and Reinforcement

As students advance to higher levels, the lessons become increasingly detailed. Many chapters discuss complex issues that may require additional explanation. Often teachers require additional resources to plan and organize a class. Teachers need to prepare lessons for the class, but time may not permit them to perform all the necessary research and collect all the available tools. This is where the Annotated Teacher’s Edition will become a valuable resource.

For lower-level books, the lessons are simple and abridged. However, even then, the lower level lessons require some explanations and teaching tips. These explanations and tips are not included in the textbook. If teachers have these resources handy, they will feel empowered and enjoy teaching. For these reasons, the Annotated Teacher’s Edition will be immensely beneficial and is a must for teachers in Level 1 to Level 4 classes.

At Weekend Learning, we want to make teaching to be enriching, rewarding, and effective. The Annotated Teacher’s Editions of the Islamic Studies books provide exactly what teachers need—explanations, strategies, resources, activities, and teaching tips.

• Allāh could have made Abdullāh, Aminah and ‘Abd al-Muttalib live longer so that Muhammad would not become an orphan. What is the divine wisdom behind these tragedies in Rasūlullāh’s life?

• Allāh could have defeated Abrahah using the Quraish, but it did not happen that way. Why did the Quraish not fight Abrahah? What is the divine wisdom in destroying Abrahah in such an unprecedented way?

• Why did Abū Tālib protect his nephew Muhammad, knowing full well that his nephew was working against his own pagan religious beliefs?

• Allāh could have made Abū Tālib accept Islam. Even Khosrow or Heraclius, to name a few rulers, could have accepted Islam. What is the divine wisdom behind them not accepting Islam even after receiving the invitation?

• Rasūlullāh (S) prayed to Allāh to make either Abū Jahl or ‘Umar al Khattāb accept Islam. Abū Jahl did not accept Islam, but ‘Umar al Khattāb accepted Islam. Why?

• Rasūlullāh (S) sent certain Muslims to Abyssinia—apparently to avoid oppression—but the group did not include members that were severely oppressed. What is the divine wisdom behind this act?

• The permission to fight was given after the Muslims arrived in Madīnah. Why was permission not given during the Makkan period when the Muslims were severely oppressed?

• In the Battle of Badr, the Muslims achieved a massive victory. But in the Battle of Uhud, the story was quite different. Why did Allāh make the Muslims suffer in the Battle of Uhud?

• The siege on Madīnah during the Battle of the Trench lasted nearly 25 days. Eventually the enemies were destroyed without the Muslims having to fight an actual battle. Why did Allāh make the siege last so long? What lesson can we learn from this battle?

• Abdullah Ibn Ubayy worked all his life to destroy Islam. On several occasions, ‘Umar ibn Al-Khattāb wanted to kill him. Even Ubayy’s son sought Rasūlullāh’s permission to kill his own father. However, Rasūlullāh did not give his permission. Why not?

• The slander against ‘Ā’ishah continued unabated for nearly a month, causing distress to Rasūlullāh and his family. A divine revelation declaring ‘Ā’ishah’s innocence was sent after one month. Why did Allāh delay sending the revelation?

• The Expedition to Tabūk ended without a battle. Allāh could have informed Rasūlullāh (S) that the Byzantines would not show up for battle. This would have saved the Muslims from tremendous distress during their journey in the hot summer months. What was the divine wisdom behind this expedition?

21 Du‘ā for ChildrenAllāh says He always listens to good prayers made by everyone. He listens to the prayers made by believers and sinners. Have you taught enough du‘ā to your students? During good times and bad times in their lives, students need to know who to rely on for help and guidance, and what to say in their du‘ā. The best prayers are those taught by Allāh in the Qur’ān and those taught by our Nabi. This booklet contains 21 du‘ā from the Qur’ān. We can always pray to Allāh using our own words. However, it is immensely better if we pray to Allāh using the exact words of the Qur’ān.

The samples below are excerpts from 21 Du‘ā for Children. Each du‘ā includes its meaning, transliteration, and significance.
