INTRODUCTION The Central Department of Geography (CDG) located in the University Campus, Kirpur, is one of the leading Departments of Tribhuvan University. It was formally established in 1959. Since then, it has been acvely serving the country in higher educaon and research. The Department runs Master’s and Ph.D programme in Geography and admission is open to all relevent disciplines. It is a pioneer department running academic courses on Geographic Informaon System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) in the country. The newly established soil and water analysis lab has enhanced its teaching and research acvies. The Department has well qualified and experienced facules. COURSES OFFERED Central Department of Geography offers 2 - year Master’s level courses under semester system. Master’s Degree is offerred aſter successful compleon of four semesters. Courses offerred include Geographical Thought; Geomorphoogy; Human Geography; Region, Regionalism and Regional Analysis; Geographic Problems of Nepal; Climate, Hydrology and Bio-Geography; Geographic Informaon System (GIS); Remote Sensing (RS); and Thesis as core/compulsory courses. In addion, students are required to take three oponal courses out of 13 oponal courses whose detail contents are develped. More oponal course tles are listed in the curriculum and they are offerred as per the demand of the students. All courses are of 3 credit hours except Thesis which is 9 credit hours. DEPARTMENTAL FACILITIES The Department has rooms for lectures, seminars and workshops, as well as laboratory rooms equipped with GIS/RS facilies. The soil and water analysis laboratory is equiped with modest facilies. The Department has the following facilies: GIS/RS Facilies - ArcGIS, ArcView, ArcInfo, IDRISI, ILWIS, ERDAS Imagine, ALDUS freehand, GPS, Color Laser printer, Mulmedia + LCD projectors, Overhead projectors etc. Survey and Cartographic Facilies - Surveying Instruments (Theodolite, Prismac Compass, Clinometer, Dumpy Level and Telescopic Alidade), Drawing Instruments etc. Soil laboratory - Atomic absorpon spectrophotometer, UV/VIS spectrophotometer, Air-blowing drier, High speed bench centrifuge; Electric-heated thermostac water bath cauldron, Sample pulverizer for plant and soil samples, Vercal pressure steam sterilizer, Magnec strirrer, Thermostat shaking incubato, Acidimeter, Turbidmeter, Electronic balance, Flame photometer, Axotometer, Pure water meter, , Soil sampler, Test-bed Nylon sieve, Stainless steel soil sieve, Refrigerator etc. Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) - UAV device and Image processing soſtware. Department Library – contains course books & reference materials, research project reports, students thesis, major naonal newspapers, and internet facility for students. Research Cell equipped with computers & internet facility and some reference books and Journals. GIS and RS Training ModulesModel I: Application based Five-weeks Training for Professionals: Scheduled twice a year (Summer and Winter Session). More than 25 such trainings on Application of GIS for Natural Resource Management, Service and Infrastructure Planning and Development, Disaster Risk Assessment and Hazard Mapping have been completed and over 350 professionals representing from various GOs, NGOs and INGOs have always been trained.

Model II: Theme based Special GIS Training package with duration of three to five weeks (Upon request of different institutions customized at different levels).

Model III: Training to the Graduate Students of Other Departments of TU and Basic Training Course to the GIS/RS Beginners. It primarily focuses on concepts, basic skills and application of GIS in the different fields of their requirements.

ACADEMIC COLLABORATIONSCDG now has academic collaborations through Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for research and scientific exchange with foreign universities, research centres, and government institutions.
