Introduction

Forest Department is one of the importantdepartments  under  the  government  ofChhatisgarh.  It  is  engaged  in  planning,implementation,  monitoring  andevaluation of  forestry, and environmentalprogrammes  in  the  state.  It  is  the  solecustodian  of  rich  forest  resource  of  thestate.

The principal activities undertaken by  thedepartment  consist  of  conservation  offlora,  fauna,  sustainable  management  offorest  and  wildlife,  rehabilitation  ofdegraded  forests, natural  regeneration offorests, management of forest products inthe  framework  of  current  policy  andlegislative environment. The state has  itsown  forest  policy.  The  organizational

structure of the department covers different wings at the Headquarter, 8 field circles and 45 territorial, wildlife and other functional divisions.

The state of Chhattisgarh being placed  in Deccan biogeographical Area, houses an  important part of  thatrich  and  unique  biological  diversity.  What  is  a  more  conspicuous  is  that  the  state  is  significantly  rich  inendemism with respect to many plants having medicinal importance. The forests of the state fall under twomajor forest types, i.e., Tropical Moist Deciduous forest and the Tropical Dry Deciduous forest. The state ofChhattisgarh is endowed with about 22 varied forest subtypes existing in the state.

Sal (Shorea Robusta) and Teak (Tectona grandis) are the two major tree species in the state. Other notableoverwood  species  are  Bija  (Pterocarpus  marsupium),  Saja  (Terminalia  tomentosa),  Dhawra  (Anogeissuslatifolia),  Mahua  (Madhuca  indica),  Tendu  (Diospyros melanoxylon)  etc.  Amla  (Embilica  officinalis),  Karra(Cleistanthus collinus) and bamboo (Dendrocalamus strictus) constitute a significant chunk of middle canopyof  the  state  forests.  From  the management  point  of  view,  there  are  four  types  of  forests  in  the  state  ofChhattisgarh. These are Teak, Sal, Miscellaneous and Bamboo forests.

Biogeographically,  the state falls  in Deccan bioregion comprising representative fauna of central  India  likethe tiger (Panthera tigris), leopard (Panthera pardus), gaur (Bos gaurus), sambhar (Cervus unicolor) , chital(Axis axis), nilgai (Boselaphus tragocamelus) and wild boar (Sus scrofa). The state is a proud possessor ofrare  wildlife  like  the  wild  buffalo  (Bubalus  bubalis)  and  hill  myna  (Gracula  religiosa)  which  have  beendeclared  as  rare  and  endangered.  Apart  from  the  species  diversity,  the  state  is  also  endowed  with  richgenetic diversity. The variation in the genetic composition of individuals within or among floristic and faunalspecies is large.

The  recorded  forest  area  in  the  state  is  59,772  km2  which  is  44.21  of  its  geographical  area.  Reserved,Protected  and  Unclassed  Forests  constitute  43.13%,  4021%  and  16.65%  of  the  total  forest  arearespectively

Forest Cover

The forest cover of state is placed at 55,870 Sq.Km. According to forest survey of India assessment (2007)the extent of very dense  forest    is 4,162 Sq.Km., dense  forest   35,038 Sq.Km. and open  forest  is 16,670Sq.Km. The  legal  forest area  (as per  the  legal definition)   of  the state  is 59772 sq. km. This accounts  for 44.2 % of  geographical area of the state.

Tree Cover of the state has been estimated using TOF inventory data collected over a period of six years,i.e.200410 The estimated  tree cover in the state is 3,866 km2 which is 2.86% of the geographical area of thestate.  six  districts  of  the  state  (Bilaspur,Durg,Jashpur,kawardh,Kanker  and  Rajnandgaon)  have  beeninventoried. The forest and tree cover of the state is presented in Table

Although there is an actual change of 4 km2 as detected during 2011 assessment there is a net decrease of192 km2  in  the  forest cover  from the reported area  in  ISFR 2009. This has occurred due  to  refinement ofinterpretational methodology  on  the  one  hand  and  availability  of  satellite  data  of  appropriate  season withimproved quality as compared to previous years. A quantitative account of the classwise change is given inforest cover change matrix in below table

As per Champion &Seth Classification,  the state has  ten  forest  type groups, viz.Tropical Moist Deciduousand Tropical Dry Deciduous Forest cover  in different  forest  type groups  found  in  the state on  the basis offorest cover assessment s given in the pie diagram.

The growing Stack in the recorded forest area has been estimated on the basis of the current forest covermap,  forest  type and  forest  inventory data. For  trees outside  forests  (TOF),  the same has been estimatedusing TOF inventory data. The same has been presented in Table

wildlife and ecotourism because of its rich biodiversity. Chhattisgarh is blessed with some of the mostendangered and rare wildlife species are found here. For wildlife enthusiasts and nature loversChhattisgarh is a perfect destination.

Wildlife Sanctuaries in Chhattisgarh are inhabited by the the endangered Wild Buffalos and Hill Myna,the State Animal and State Bird of Chhattisgarh respectively. The other animals and birds which you cansee in these sanctuaries are the Wild Boar, Indian Gazelle, Chital or Spotted Deer, Nilgai, Sloth Bear,Sambars, Gaurs, Barking Deer, Bison, Chausingha or Fourhorned Antelope, Chinkara, Muntjac, Dholeor Wild Dog, Jackal, Striped Hyena, and Porcupine etc. The birds which you can spot in this region areParrots,Green Pigeons, Storks, Darters, Wood Peckers, Jungle Fowls, Quails, Peacocks, Graypartridges,etc.

Barnawapara Sanctuary

Chhattisgarh wildlife sanctuaries attract many tourists to this Indian state. Barnawapara Sanctuary is apopular wildlife sanctuary situated in the Mahasamund district of Chhattisgarh. The sanctuary has a totalarea of 245 sq km. 

Though this wildlife sanctuary of Chhattisgarh does not occupy a huge area like the other ChhattisgarhWildlife Sanctuaries yet it is an important tourist spot in Chhattisgarh. After the passing of the WildlifeProtection Act of 1972, Barnawapara Sanctuary was established in 1976. The altitude of this regionranges from 265 to 400 m. The wildlife species in the Barnawapara Sanctuary is varied. The animallovers can see Tigers, Leopards, Hyenas, Antelopes, Porcupine, Bison, Python and many other species.There are a variety of bird species in this wildlife sanctuary. One can see the Herons, Bulbul, Parrots,Egrets and several rare species. The forest of Barnawapara Sanctuary consists of the trees like Sal, Teak,Bamboo and other Tropical Dry Deciduous trees. There are several other varieties of trees growing inthis forest. They include Mahua, Tendu, Ber and Seemal trees. The Chhattisgarh tourism encouragestours to the wildlife sanctuaries in the state. The most suitable time to go on a safari in the BarnawaparaSanctuary is from November to June. The tourists visiting Chhattisgarh, can avail airway, railway androadway to reach Barnawapara Sanctuary. The airport of Raipur is the nearest one from this sanctuary.The tourists can access the railway service from Mahasamund railway station. The developed roadwayslink the sanctuary with the state capital of Raipur. 

Sita Nadi Sanctuary

Sita Nadi Sanctuary is situated in the district of Dhamtari in Chhattisgarh. After the passing of WildlifeProtection Act of 1972, Sita Nadi Sanctuary was established in 1974. The average altitude of this place is327 m to 736 m. The sanctuary has a total area of about 556 sq km. River Sitanadi flows across thesanctuary and thus this sanctuary of Dhamtari has derived its name. The river Sitanadi flows to meetriver Mahanadi in Deokhut. The tourists on a tour to the Chhattisgarh wildlife sanctuaries, should not

miss a visit to Sita Nadi Sanctuary. November to June are the ideal time to visit Sita Nadi Sanctuary inChhattisgarh. The sanctuary is known for its rich vegetation. The forest consists of trees like Mahua,Tendu, Harra and the moist peninsular trees like Sal, Bamboo and Teak. Besides supporting a rich varietyof flora, the sanctuary is also a haven for the different species of animals and birds. The nature lovers inSita Nadi Sanctuary can not afford to miss to see the animals like Leopards, Antelopes, Black Buck,Monkey, Nilgai and many other rare species of animals. A tourist will also be able to see Egrets, Parrots,Bulbul, Tree Pie birds in the sanctuary. A project has been undertaken to develop Sita Nadi Sanctuaryinto a sanctuary for preservation of Tigers. Sita Nadi Sanctuary is one of the most popular touristattraction of Chhattisgarh tourism. The tourists from outside Chhattisgarh can access the Raipur airport toreach Sita Nadi Sanctuary. They can also access train service from Dhamtari railway station. 

Udanti Sanctuary

Udanti Sanctuary was established in 1983 after the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 was passed. Thesanctuary is a major tourist attraction of Raipur in Chhattisgarh. 

The total area covered by the wildlife sanctuary is about 232 sq km. The name Udanti has derived fromthe river Udanti that flows through this region. The topography of the region is mainly hilly and someparts are plain land. The Udanti Wildlife Sanctuary is known for its efforts to preserve the endangeredspecies of wild buffalo. Chhattisgarh tourism is never complete without taking a day out to theChhattisgarh wildlife sanctuaries. The tourists can see the wild buffaloes which are the most importantspecies of animal in Udanti Sanctuary. The other animals that are conserved in this sanctuary ofChhattisgarh are Tigers, Antelopes, Black Buck, Jackals, fox, Bison, Barking Deer, Wild Dog, Hyena,and Cobras. The birds that are found in this wildlife sanctuary are Magpie Robin, Heron, Parrots, Egrets,Pea fowl etc. Udanti Sanctuary is a favorite haunt of the nature lovers. They love to spend their time inthe natural surroundings among the wild animal and birds. The trees that grow in the Udanti Sanctuaryare primarily of Tropical Dry Peninsular type of which Sal is the most common variety and Tropical DryDeciduous Mixed type. The mostly found trees in this region are Teak, Mahua, Salai, Mahul, Herra,Tendu and other varieties. The hilly terrain and the plain land of the sanctuary adds to the scenic beautyof the sanctuary. This sanctuary is visited by tourists from all over India and abroad. From the statecapital of Chhattisgarh, Raipur, Udanti Sanctuary is at a distance of 160 km. The tourists from outsideChhattisgarh can avail the facility of the Raipur airport. The sanctuary can be reached through theweather roads in the district. Rail and bus service can also be availed from Rajim.
