The petrochemical industry is as creation value industry in the country. In other words, petrochemical industry is as pioneer industry in creating value added in petroleum which requires the government‘s special attention and support as well as further participation of private sector. To this end, the state-governed vision in petrochemical industry changes its place to private sectors having top-notch participation in petrochemical projects.Accessing to international waters and abundance varieties of feedstock in the country makes this industry to face minor risk for investment. By considering these advantages, the investors are very keen on participating in completion of petrochemical projects.Nowadays, over 70 petrochemical projects at different stages are under way, anticipated to have 100 million tons of petrochemical production by the end of 5th five-year development plan. By completion of these projects, many jobs will be created and different regions of the country would be developed and also through the oil and gas resources, creating value added products would be even further importance.Furthermore, technical and economic studies are in progress to establish Chahbahar Petrochemical Special Economic Zone promising a sustainable development in petrochemical industry.

PROJECTS
Lying on the coast of the Persian Gulf, the Petrochemical Special Economic Zone, originally spread out on an area of 1700 hectares in southwestern city of Mahshahr, Bandar Imam Khomeini district. The zone was expanded over an area of 2300 hectares in March 2007 based on authorization No. K 36042 T/167936 by Iran’s High Council of Free Industrial / Trade Zone. According to this addendum, Bandar Imam, Razi and Farabi petrochemical companies were located in Petrochemical Special Eco-nomic Zone. Mahshahr is already the hub of Iran’s petrochemical industry. In view of its natural & geographical location and also enjoying the legal facilities of special zones, the Petrochemical Special Eco-nomic Zone has been created in order to develop the industry and trade activities (specially downstream industries), meet-ing the economic, social and national in-terests, attracting new technologies and increasing employment. From the geographical point of view, the zone has access to the international waterway through Bandar Imam and through the national railway network is accessible to Turkey, Europe and Cen-tral Asian countries.
The Petrochemical Special Economic Zone Organization was established in 1997 based on an authorization by Iran’s High Council of Free Industrial / Trade Zone to manage and develop industrial and economical activities including pet-rochemical sector in the area.As a subsidiary of NPC, the Petrochemi-cal Special Economic Zone Organization welcomes local and foreign investors to invest in this economically important area.

PROJECTS
The Pars Special Economic / Energy Zone Organization as a representative of Iran’s Petroleum Ministry and National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) man-ages and develops the South and North oil and gas fields in the region. Pars Special Economic / Energy Zone consists of three regions; Pars 1 (South Pars) with an area of 14 hectares, Pars 2 (Pars Kangan) with an area of 16 hectares and Pars 3 (North Pars) with an area of 16 hectares. the Organization was established in 1999 to protect the world largest gas field through activities of establishment, approval, planning, implementation, utilization and maintenance of public infrastructures like roads, rail ways, ports, airports, electricity, drinking water, integrated management of the re-gions. The proper infrastructures in the up, middle and down streams of oil and gas industry, Pars Complex Port, the International Persian Gulf Airport, water and electricity facilities, communication, roads and available natural tourist attractions made the region interesting for local and foreign investors to invest in this economically important area.Lying on the coast of the Persian Gulf, the Zone has access to the rich hydrocarbon resources in the region providing suitable conditions for foreign investment. It is the hub of development activities underway at South Pars gas field. With its reserves estimated at 14 trillion cubic meters of gas and 18 billion barrels of condensates, the field is the world’s largest gas field. It represents 6.8% of the world’s total gas reserves. Given the field’s capacity, 28 develop-ment phases and 3 giant LNG projects have so far been planned to be built in Assaluyeh and Kangan in an area of 30,000 hectares. Currently, the first ten phases are onstream. An average, $1bn has been invested for each phase.The implementation work of phases 11,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23 and 24 have been started and are underway. Persian Gulf
The Persian Gulf is the name of a body of water which is an extension of the Indian Ocean located between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula. Geologists believe that about five hundred thousands years ago, the Persian Gulf was formed in its early shape near Iran’s southern plateau. Its shape, however, changed as the result of geological de-velopments over the years. The Persian Gulf ancient inhabitants were the first to learn navigation skills and to build ships. Iranians actually began to navigate the Persian Gulf back in 500 B.C. under the rule of Darius I. He built the world’s first mari-time fleet. His ships sailed through the Sind River to the coast of the Indian Ocean, the Oman Sea and the Persian Gulf. They circumvented the Arabian Peninsula and reached the end of what is now called the Red Sea. Darius issued an order to his soldiers to construct a canal at a place which is now known as Suez Canal through which his ships reached the Mediterranean Sea. Among the Achaemenid inscriptions found in Egypt (515-518 B.C.) mention should be made of the three stele of Darius I bearing inscriptions about the construction of The Suez Canal. One of the inscriptions reads: “I am a Persian; setting out from Persia I conquered Egypt. I ordered to dig this canal from the river that is called Nile and flows in Egypt, to the sea that begins in Persia.

Therefore, when this canal had been dug as I had ordered, ships went from Egypt through this canal to Persia, as I had intended.” The second century Greek geogra-pher, astronomer, and astrologer Claudius Ptolemaeus used the words “Sinus Persi-cus” meaning the Persian Gulf in a book he wrote on the world’s geography. In the first century B.C., the Greco-Roman geographer and historian Estrabon re-peatedly used the name Persian Gulf in his book. He has written that Arabs inhabited an area between the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. Arrianus Flavius, a second century Greek historian and philosopher in his book “Anabasis of Alexander” or “The Campaigns of Alexander” has used the word “Periskon Kaitas” for the Persian Gulf. Many Arabic books also refer to the sea in south Iran as the “Persian Gulf”, including the world famous Arabic encyclopedia ‘Al-Monjad’ which is the most reliable source in this respect. The name Persian Gulf has appeared most in the Arabic works than any other language. Those who have only a faint acquaintance with the works of the Islamic period have heard the names of famous scholars and historians like Masoud Ibn Batutah, Persian geographer Hamdallah Mostoufi, Hamza Esfahani, Abu Rayhan Biruni and Naser Khosro Ghobadiyani who have written most of their works in Arabic. “Persian Gulf” has been mentioned in the books of these scholars. Many Arab writers have also used the name Persian Gulf in their writings.
