About RUA – Research and Project Implementation

GS - Center for Agricultural and Environmental Studies

GS - Building Capacity of Institutions to Help farmers Better Adapt to Climate Change and Variability in Cambodia (Build-Farm-Adapt)

Objectives: Increasing awareness of climate risks management

among Provincial Departments of Agriculture, MAFF, and other interested stakeholders.

Develop educational outreach materials and demonstration trials to increase farmer awareness of the need for, and benefit of, adaptation strategies.

Determine trends in climate variability based on weather data, through cooperation with the Department of Meteorology.

Establishment of benchmark information on the likely effects of climate change on agricultural sectors within Cambodia.

Synthesis of the lessons derived from results of the project in terms of farm-level adjustment guidelines and information dissemination channels.

About energy efficiency in Cambodia

Current energy situation in Cambodia(Genaration of electricity) More than 95% of electric power generation is from diesel power plant.

13 fuel power plants generate electricity to provinces (Sihanouk, Siem Reap, Takeo, Kampot, BMC, PreyVeng, Stung Treng, Pursat, Kg. Cham, R.Kiri, Kg. Chhnang).

About EE in Cambodia

Cambodia government energy efficiency targets for the long term. Cambodia is situated in the Lower Mekong

region, with total population of 14.3 million and growth rate is 1.54 (NIS, 2012),

84% of population in rural areas lacking of electricity and 16.41% of total households have access to electricity,

National strategy by 2020, all villages will be able to access electricity.

Final remarks Any other remarks:

1. Cambodia’s energy sector has a crucial role to play in the country’s continued development. However the current situation in Cambodia with respect to energy costs, service provision, sustainability and security may prove to be a barrier to development.

2. Cambodia has no proven fossil fuel reserves, and is almost completely dependent on fully-imported diesel fuel for electricity production and other power applications. The impacts of this are widespread and appear to hinder development in terms of economic growth and poverty reduction.

3. Since about 80-85% of the total population lives in the rural areas, the government of Cambodia is placing great emphasis on the development of local energy resources (renewable energy sources) to raise the living standard of the rural population.
