Biological Molecules Lesson 1

Page 2: Introduction to biological molecules

Quick Questions

Sketch an atomic diagram for the following…- Hydrogen- Carbon- Oxygen

How would you define metabolism? All the chemical processes that take place in

living organisms

What is a polymer?Long chains of monomer subunits joined together

Today’s lesson – Introduction to Biological Molecules

We need to be able to answer:1.Describe what a mole is.2.What is a molar solution?3.Explain what bonding is.4.Explain how molecules are formed.5.Describe polymerisation.6.What is a macro molecule?7.Describe hydrolysis and condensation.8.Describe metabolism.

Language we will be using:1.Mole2.Bonding3.Polar4.Condensation 5.Hydrolysis6.Metabolism

The mole and molar solution

• The Mole is the SI Unit for measuring the amount of a substance

• One mole contains the same number of particles as there are in 12g of Carbon-12 (6.022 x 1023 atoms - 6.022 x 1023 is the Avogadro number)

• A molar solution contains 1 mole in 1L of solution

Bonding and how molecules are formed

Types of bonding

Polymerisation

Page 8: Introduction to biological molecules

Polymerisation produces macromolecules

• When we build these biological molecules we release water. This is known as a ‘condensation’ reaction

Page 9: Introduction to biological molecules

Polymerisation

• When we break these biological molecules down we use water. This is known as a ‘hydrolysis’ reaction
