Digitised Manuscript Metadata

• Today: Heterogeneous metadata and object data in information silos

– How to integrate and enrich these data?

Europeana Data Model (EDM)

• Backbone of Europeana

• Unites several standards & vocabularies

• Representation of cultural heritage objects from libraries, archives and museums

• As generic as possible

• Can be specialised for different domains

Putting Linked Library Data to Work - Introduction 18.11.2014 13

Page 14: Introduction to dm2 e final dg

DM2E Data Model

• EDM application profile for describing digitised manuscripts

• Specialises the basic EDM classes and properties related to digital manuscripts, e.g.: • Physical Forms: dm2e:Manuscript, fabio:Cover etc.

• Conceptual Forms: dm2e:Paragraph, fabio:Chapter etc.

• Relations: dm2e:influencedBy, dm2e:printedAt, bibo:numPages, pro:author etc.

• Adds DM2E perspective about a dataset

DHAB & The Scholarly Domain Model

• Enables a low level and pragmatic formalization of scholarly workflows – What do Digital Humanists expect from digital integrated working

environments? – How can we formalize requirements using Semantic Web

ontologies?

• Supported by the „Digital Humanities Advisory Board“

• Influences the development of Pundit and other components to come.

• Anticipates and triggers future developments and community activities beyond DM2E

Wrap-Up

1. Aggregation of manuscript metadata & content – Provide contextualised metadata of prominent digitised manuscripts

and related materials to Europeana and the Linked Open Data community

2. Interoperability Infrastructure – Provide a flexible, scalable and configurable open source production

environment for data migration and enrichment with DM2E/EDM as target format

3. Digital Humanities Applications – Provide specialised Digital Humanities applications that can showcase

the usefulness of Linked Open Data/Europeana for this specific community

4. Community Building – Foster a community of content holders, Digital Humanists, and other

users around Europeana
