Quantitative Finance

In a nutshell, Quantitative Finance is a discipline devotedto applying the eclectic mathematical and statisticalmodels to tame risks and generate alpha in the setting of afinancial institution.

Definition of QUANT: an expert at analyzing and managingquantitative data

Merriam-Webster Dictionary

Why Data?

♦ Trading systems don’t care what the answers are: We willlet the market tell us the answers by what it does.

♦ Strategy is easy, execution is hard.

♦ Our approach is very different. We don’t start with models. We start with data. We don’t have any preconceivednotions. We look for things that can be replicatedthousands of times.

Emanuel Derman SaidQuants and their cohorts practice“financial engineering”—an awkwardneologism coined to describe the jumbleof activities that would better be termedquantitative finance. The subject is aninterdisciplinary mix of physics-inspiredmodels, mathematical techniques, andcomputer science, all aimed at thevaluation of financial securities. The bestquantitative finance brings real insightinto the relation between value anduncertainty, and it approaches thequality of real science; the worst is apseudoscientific hodgepodge of complexmathematics used with obscurejustification.

Mathematical Models and Making Money

We began to bring in some mathematicians and scientistsand built models. And then more people came in and webuilt more models. Then the business got better and better, and over the years, we have been enormously successfuland made a ton of money—I have to confess.

Why Quantitative? “THE wave of the future.”

Now, a lot has happened since Sputnik wentup and the days of the National DefenseEducation Act. The world’s whole economicengine now is not just defense, butincreasingly based on math and science. You know, from Genentech to Google toGoldman (Sachs), math & science isbecoming king. . . .Now, there at Goldman Sachs, thesescientific types are called “quants,” andsome of you may have heard of quants, butat Google, they’re just called employees, because they’re all quants. . . .And that’s a wave of the future. I think it’sTHE wave of the future.
