RADAR

• RAdio Detection And Ranging• Transmission and reception of Electro-Magnetic radiation via

echo location• Detects object and its location by estimating object direction

and distance

TOA Estimation

• Estimating the Time of Arrival of the signal, we can compute the distance of a target

Distance = Speed x Time

Page 5: Introduction to Radar (10-Minutes-Microteaching )

DOA Estimation

• Using multiple sensors, we will be able to estimate Direction of Arrival with higher accuracy

• We can estimate the azimuth and or the elevation angles

Group Discussion

• What kind of wave is transmitted by this Bat?• What is the receiver of this radar-like system?• What kind of objects it detects?• Do you think this bat estimate the DOA and TOA of the

reflection?

Radar-like System

Some similar detection and ranging methods:• SONAR (Sound Navigation and Ranging)• LIDAR (Light Ranging and Detection)

Summary

• Radar can determine the position of an object by estimating its direction and distance

• By employing Doppler Effect phenomenon Radar can detect moving objects

• Radar and radar-like are widely used in civil and military applications
