Introduction

Urban Living Heritage is an integral part of the multifaceted socio-economic milieu of Indian cities. It is closely linked to the city’s informal and creative economy, people’s identity and urban environment. Contemporary urban development initiatives of Indian cities need to integrate the possibilities of such heritage in defining a distinct character of the city. Many of our cities, however, have not been able to comprehend the myriad layers of the urban heritage, thus missing crucial opportunities of connecting different stakeholders on urban management and sustainable development. In achieving sustainable and just socio-economic development, living urban heritage can become a catalyst to connect to various urban discourses and stakeholders in the contemporary urban management processes. Acknowledging these concerns the Centre for Heritage Management of Ahmedabad University is organising a series of workshops for multiple stakeholders. The first in this series of workshops is scheduled to be held at Ahmedabad University on 3rd and 4th August 2019. This first edition of the workshop aims to inquire about the current challenges on managing urban living heritage and explore frameworks for resolving those issues. The workshop will focus on two major areas: first, understanding the multiple layers of our urban heritage by focusing on a case within the historic walled city of Ahmedabad, which has been listed on the UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites since 2017. Second, we will explore relevant international conventions including the 1972 World Heritage Convention as applicable in the contexts of our urban living heritage. The workshop shall be useful for students interested in exploring heritage context as their theses, projects or research topics, as well as anyone interested in learning about urban living heritage.
