Dear Scholar
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the University of South Australia. I am delighted
that you have chosen to study with us and am sure you will find University of South Australia an
exciting and stimulating place, both academically and socially.
Each new group of Australia Awards students adds something special to our campus life and we
look forward to their arrival each year. The Australia Awards scheme brings together people
from a variety of backgrounds and, in so doing, reveal the close ties that exist between Australia
and its neighbours.
Building capabilities in areas such as education, public sector and economic governance is one
aim of the Australia Awards scholarship schemes, and at University of South Australia we are
committed to providing you with the skills and professional knowledge you need to make a last-
ing contribution to your country when you return.
Most vital to the future of our region is the continued building of relationships based on trust,
understanding and mutual respect. Relationships like these are built by individuals, one at a time,
through shared experience and cooperation. Your willingness to spend the next period of your
life living and studying in Adelaide is perhaps the most fundamental contribution that can be
made to deepening the ties between our nations.
University of South Australia is a large, vibrant university with a diverse student population. You
will meet other students with a range of backgrounds and ages – from young Australians who
have just finished school, to those studying part-time to balance their life as a student with work
or parenting. I am sure you will form friendships with students, teachers and supervisors that will
last the rest of your life.
Once again, welcome to Adelaide and University of South Australia. I trust your time with us will
be both enjoyable and beneficial.

Welcome
Message from the IAP Coordinator
We are delighted to welcome you to Australia. We look forward to spending five weeks with you in this Introductory Academic Program (IAP) as you prepare for studying in Australia. The IAP aims to enable you to adjust to living in Adelaide and studying at University of South Aus-tralia. The program includes a focus on skills development related to your specific requirements and those of your programs. In general this will cover:
dealing with administrative matters (such as visa regulations and finding accommodation)
practicing academic writing and presenting seminars
developing research skills (such as finding, using and analysing information); using the universi-ty’s computer environment
developing mathematics skills
communicating effectively with staff and students and making necessary cultural adjustments. This booklet provides a detailed daily program of the IAP sessions. The program shows the loca-tion, time and contents of each session. This program may be subject to change and has some degree of flexibility depending on your rec-ommendations and specific needs. Where possible this program also includes opportunities to meet local students and staff members and to find out more about Adelaide. Throughout the program we will incorporate regular opportunities for reflective and critical thinking and times to meet socially over a meal. We anticipate that over the next few weeks we will get to know one another well. There will be some hard work but also the chance to have fun. We plan to keep in regular contact with you once you begin your studies, just to make sure everything is OK. We wish you an exciting and rewarding start to living and studying in Australia. Regards, IAP Coordinator Jane Kehrwald [email protected]
