✤ LITURGY OF THE WORD ✤A reading from the Book of Genesis 1:20-2:2
And God said, “Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and let the birds fly above the earth across the dome of the sky.” And so it happened: God created the great sea monsters and every living
creature that moves, of every kind, with which the waters swarm, and every winged bird of every kind. And God saw that it was good. And God blessed them saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” And there was evening and morning, the fifth day.
Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures of every kind: cattle and creeping things and wild animals of the earth of every kind.” And so it happened: God made the wild animals of the earth of every kind, and the cattle of every kind, and everything that creeps upon the ground of every kind. And God saw that it was good.
Then God said: “Let us make humankind in our image, after our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and the cattle, and over all the wild animals and all the creatures that crawl on the ground.” God created humankind in the divine image; in the image of God they were created; male and female God created them. And God saw that it was very good. And there was evening and morning, the sixth day.
Thus the heavens and the earth were finished and all their multitude. And on the seventh day, God rested from all the work that had been done.
Lector: The word of the Lord.Assembly: Thanks be to God.

Response The World Is Filled with Creatures
A nuthatch does not hatch a nut, sandpipers do not pipe. The wood duck is not made of wood of any common type.
But birds have wings to fly the skies, their voice is always strong. They let us dream of freedom and they give the gift of song. Refrain
Your dog is always waiting when you come back to the house The cat will rub along your leg and shed upon your blouse.
But we hug them and we pet them, they're a gift from up above. They fill our hearts with laughter and they show us how to love!
Beavers ’n bison ’n birdies ’n bats! Chipmunks ’n cheetahs ’n camels ’n cats. Donkeys ’n duckies ’n dolphins ’n dogs, ferrets ’n foxes ’n fishes ’n frogs! Refrain
Cows out in the pasture lie and calmly chew their cud. Sheep may safely graze the fields and pigs will play in mud.
Oxen toil with the yoke and horses we can ride. These animals feed and clothe us and they help us at our side. Refrain
Praise the Lord Most high through Brother Sun and Sister Moon. And through the Creatures of the Earth and with this joyful tune.
The animals need us to live and on them we depend. They're members of our family and each one is our friend. Refrain

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah 11:1-6
On that day a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom. The spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him: a
spirit of wisdom and understanding, a spirit of counsel and strength, a spirit of knowledge and fear of the Lord. And his delight shall be the fear of the Lord. Then the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; the calf and the young lion shall be neighbors.
Lector: The word of the Lord.Assembly: Thanks be to God.

The Basilica of Saint Mary, this year, celebrates its sesquicentennial. Established as the Church of the Immaculate Conception in 1868, the Basilica is the third church housing the original parish
of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. The current building dates back to 1907 and was designed by French architect Emmanuel Masqueray. The exterior was finished by 1914. Throughout the 1920s the interior acquired many of the features that make the building so uniquely beautiful. In 1926, Pope Pius XI raised the Pro-Catherdral of Saint Mary to the rank of minor basilica. It is the first such designation in the United States of America. In 1966, Pope Paul VI elevated The Basilica of Saint Mary to the rank of Cathedral Church. The United States Department of the Interior placed this building on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
The Basilica of Saint Mary has a long standing tradition of celebrating the Blessing of the Animals on the Sunday closest to the Feast of Saint Francis, October 4, patron saint of animals.
The World is Filled with Creatures was composed by Mona Lyn Reese. She was the 1993-1994 composer-in-residence at The Basilica of Saint Mary through the Minnesota Composers Forum program. The focus of this ecumenical program is to place a composer in one rural and two urban congregations to write the same music for all three. The other congregations in the consortium included Temple Israel, Minneapolis, and the College of Saint Benedict, Saint Joseph, MN. This program was funded by the Otto Bremer Foundation.
The featured endangered animal this year is the Mountain Gorilla, one of the most endangered animals in the world.
We thank In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre for the two large-scale gorilla puppets participating in our celebration this year.
Next year, the Blessing of the Animals will take place on Sunday, October 6. If you would like to help with next year’s event, please contact Kathy Dhaemers at The Basilica of Saint Mary, 612.333.1381. We hope you will be able to join us.
