This is why it’s vitally important to develop clear, complete hypotheses. You and your readers need to know exactly what you expect to find through your research, and we need to know exactly why you expect it, i.e., what your theory is.
And this is also why it’s vitally important to design a research instrument that aims to falsify your hypothesis. If all you do is search for facts that confirm your hypothesis, then you’ll never have the “friction” between fact and theory out of which to create an original argument.
