    DIRECTORS INTRODUCTION

    Welcome,

To the 2009 Inverness Book Festival. Its been an exciting rst year in the Directors

hot seat and I hope you like what Ive lined up.

Ive worked hard with the Eden Court team to bring together a programme of

events and activities that is as popular as it is diverse, so in the pages of thisbrochure youll nd everything from biography to sport, and from eating & drinking

to history, plus everything in between.

Well be entertained and enthralled with visits from Scottish authors such as Rebus

creator, Ian Rankin, Fifes very own Barbara Dickson and Mrs Rab C Nesbit, Elaine

C Smith its been a tough task whittling down the long list of guests, and so I do

hope that youll be as happy as we are with the results.

Theres also a full programme of brilliant things for little readers and their families,

including a full day of storytelling.

Ive spent a lot of my life immersed in the book world, most recently as manager

of one of the local bookshops, but most importantly, I just love books! It doesnt

matter if you read one book a month, or one a week what matters is that you letbooks into your life!

Id like to thank all of the bookshops that are working with us this year, especially

Waterstones, who have helped us secure some of the most popular authors in

Inverness Book Festivals history. We wouldnt have been able to do it without

    any of you.

Thanks also go to Jason Rose, for handing his baby over to me; to Eden Court

staff, for their time and patience and to all of you, the readers of the Highlands. I

hope youll enjoy the line up, and remember I love to hear from you, so get in touch

with any ideas and suggestions for next year.

    Happy reading,

    Brid McKibben, Book Festival Director

The Shetland Quartet, with DetectiveInspector Jimmy Perez at the helm, isattracting all kinds of attentionand

    rightly so.

Perez makes mistakes, asks the wrongquestions, is more like a priest than ahard-bitten detective and has a strainedrelationship with Inverness HQ. He is, inshort, believable.

From Raven Blacks chilling bloodstainedsnow in the heart of winter, to WhiteNights mysterious summer-timehappenings. The series continues with thegripping, Red Bones, and will be followedby the release next year of the hugely

    anticipated, Blue Lightning.

In 2006 Raven Black won the worldsbiggest prize for crime ction theDuncan Lawrie Dagger Award. Nine yearspreviously, the predecessor of this award - CWAs Gold Dagger was won by another newcomer at the time, Ian Rankin.

Perez could be set to become as much of a household name asRebus with the recently announced TV deal for Anns Shetlandquartet. The top notch company has experience working on suchhigh prole programmes as Ashes to Ashes, Hustle and Life onMars. STORYTELLINGJESS SMITH & STUART MCHARDYLA sCALA CinEMA / 13.00

Jess Smith was brought up travelling the roads of Scotland. Throughher autobiographical trilogy Jessies Journey, Tales from the Tentand Tears for a Tinker, Jess has relived and shared these times with

a colourful and passionate voice. Written originally in her cantlanguage and broad Scots, it had to be translated to English before itcould be published. Listening to Jess stories in person captures theatmosphere of those times for any of us interested in life beyond themargins of society. Jess occasionally breaks into song which Celticwomen through the ages have found easier to express their innerthoughts.

Stuart McHardy is a writer, storyteller and lecturer. His interestin Scotlands past has led him to re-evaluate the role of the oraltradition in gaining a clearer picture of our history. He believes thatwhile history is written by winners, story ourishes amongst historyssurvivors. As well as several books on Scottish History, he hasdelved into Highland cattle raiding traditions in School of the Moonand tales of the Scottish clans in The Well of Heads. His new bookTales of Loch Ness takes the limelight away from Nessie and tellssome of the less well know tales from our best know landmark.Stuart is also likely to burst into song so this event should be a livelyone.

Last year Clare published her rstbook, Tallulah and the TeenStars.Tallulah Gosh - aka Teresa Gordonis an ordinary girl living in an ordinarystreet, but who (in her bedroom)becomes the lead singer with thebiggest and best band in the world.Tallulah and her friends take the schooltalent contest by storm, a feat morenoteworthy as they were in the leastlikely to succeed category.

In the new instalment to come, Tallulahon Tour, their demo song is heard bythe inuential manager of the hit bandBetty and the Bee Stings who offerthem a support slot on their next tour. But can Teresa persuade her mumand dad that its a good idea? Will shebe able to keep the band togetherlong enough to learn new songs? ForTeresa, the future is exciting and full of incredible challenges.

Clares books embrace the fact that young girls no longer want to beballerinas or princesses. Clare wanted to tell the story of an ordinarygirl who had these ambitions, not someone in High School Musical. There is no secret that Clare draws on her own experiences and herdesire to be part of something she was proud of is evident in Tallulah- denitely an ideal all parents would be happy to encourage.

Ian Hamilton was an unknownlaw student at Glasgow University

until Christmas Eve 1950. On thatnight, assisted by Alan Stewart,Gavin Vernon and Kay Matheson, he took the Stone of Destiny frombeneath the Coronation Chair in Westminster Abbey and, in doingso became a Scottish national hero. This solitary act set Hamiltonon a path for the rest of his life from which he has not diverged.

Although it is now nearly sixty years since that fateful night, it isthe actual events surrounding the taking of the Stone which holdpeople spellbound when Hamilton recounts them.

In the Stone of Destiny, Ian has set down the chain of eventswhich led to his decision to go to London, remove the Stone and aminute-by-minute account of the act and the aftermath.

But this is not simply a retelling of a stunt that made nationwidenews; it is a book about how a nations conscience was stirred by asymbolic act that changed lives of many.
