Steering the country’s economic growth is our 10-year economic Transformation Programme and in the process creating rM1.4 trillion in business opportunities.
We have indeed come a long way but we are a young nation with much more to achieve. We invite you to engage in discussion and debate over the next two days and open your eyes to the opportunities to capitalise with us on our journey to achieve Developed Status by 2020.

From all over the world, they came, they saw, they traded. Malacca proved irresistible for civilisations across the globe. The Ming Dynasty
of china despatched the great chinese admiral Zheng He leading the biggest
armada of the time to establish trade with the Malacca empire in the 14th
century. Tome Pires arrived from Lisbon in the 15th century documenting in his
book called the ‘Suma oriental’ the vast potential of the spice trade in the region.
The arabs, the Dutch, the british and others raced to our shores to trade with us.
Multinationals: early origins. The Dutch east India company, thought to be the world’s first multinational
company, established a trading post in Malacca as early as the 16th century.
Not wanting to lose out on the spice trade, the english east India company
competed with the Dutch in this region. both these large companies shaped
world history by their desire to control trade with us.

Business is in our Dna. Since before the age of the Malacca empire ruled
by the Malay ruler Parameswara, trade has been in
our blood. The Sultanate thrived on entrepot trade
establishing itself as a global trading hub for the
spice trade which made Malacca the most important
port in South east asia during the 15th and early
16th centuries.

political stability: over 50 years of assurance and confidence.
If there is one fact that defines Malaysia it is our political stability. Never in our history since independence have we lost confidence in the stability of
our political system. The Malaysian Government was resolute in dealing with the socio-political and economic aftermath of the 1997 asian
financial crisis. In our darkest hour we turn to the strength of our unity.
1970
independence: The First steps. We have come a long way in a short span of time. our journey
took us from a largely agrarian nation into a country on the cusp of a developed-nation status. Malaysia’s rapid industrialisation has
been dubbed the “Malaysian Miracle” by Nobel Laureate Professor Joseph Stiglitz. Post-independence we were still a poor nation.
Today, per capita income is rM29,225 up 2,537% since 1970 with incidence of poverty below 4%.
In the very beginning, the Federal Highway was constructed to transport goods to and from Malaysia’s new national port known as
Port klang. Now, superhighways and expressways connect the entire country and together with Malaysia’s numerous modern ports again
places Malaysia as aSeaN’s trading hub.
Malaysia is now embarking on a new economic journey with its transformation programme to attain vision 2020 barely eight years
away. That’s a huge leap since our first steps of independence in 1957.
as a people, we have evolved from a separate multi-ethnic and multi-religious society to co-exist in the spirit of 1Malaysia.
Democracy the building blocks.our continued growth has been as solid as the foundation of our political system. The proof is in the pudding as they say and over 5 decades of political stability has led to economic prosperity and lasting peace. The 2011 Legatum Prosperity Index credits Malaysia as having a high gross domestic savings rate of 36% and ranks Malaysia as the 17th most stable and the 13th most flourishing economy in the world. This is our reality due to the unique blend of well-suited parliamentary democracy that we cherish and practice. Democracy and trade is in our blood.

industries flourished, today they serve the world. We gave flavour to the rest of the world with our spice trade. In the 18th century our high-quality tin lined the tea-chests of the british. Malayan tin and gold drew mass arrivals of foreign settlers wanting to live here. The europeans loved Malayan pepper. Malaysian rubber fuelled industries around the globe. as a consequence of going Green, rubberwood or Malaysian oak with its reputation of being of high-quality and as strong as teak has revolutionised the furniture industry.
Today, we are a major player in the semiconductor global supply chain and as a result a world top 3 Pv solar panel manufacturer.
We also provide the world with the second largest palm oil output that could surpass 19.8 million metric tons in 2012.
Islamic finance finds its commercial roots in Malaysia as we remain in the leading position with more than 70% of global sukuks issued by Malaysia.
Malaysia has assumed a leadership role in the business of capital market development with 3 of aSeaN’s top 5 indigenous investment banks being Malaysian and bursa Malaysia being a first mover in the aSeaN exchanges trading link which will connect the exchanges of Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand in mid-2012 creating a US$ 1.4 trillion virtual marketplace.
Transformation: an indigenous Multinational growth story.our drive to be a developed nation by 2020 through innovation and sound
economic management is paying off. Since 1970, GNI has grown 6,409%,
per capita income 2,537% and life expectancy is up 17 years to 74.1 years.
Today, the new federal administrative centre in Putrajaya that captures
the futuristic aspirations of a young nation while retaining the aesthetic
splendour of local culture and values, continues to be a transformational
catalyst to ensure Malaysia remains a nation where business thrives.
The Petronas Twin Towers remain the world’s tallest twin buildings and
stand as a symbol of its people’s embrace of modernity while remaining
true to Islamic architecture and tenets. but more than building an
architectural wonder, Petronas is an inspirational Malaysian multinational
that has earned its place as the worlds 86th largest and 11th most
profitable company on the 2011 Fortune Global 500 list.
being center to aSeaN’s 600 million people, Malaysian corporates have followed the lead of Petronas to grow beyond our shores and built Malaysia into an indigenous multinational marketplace where Malaysia’s FbM kLcI 30 component companies earn 40% of their revenue from outside Malaysia.

A sense of destiny is tied into Malaysia’s economic transformation. This resource-rich, stable country is on track to achieve high income status by 2020. Integration with our ASEAN neighbours is set to reinforce the momentum. Helping the economic push are companies such as QL Resources. Our three divisions: fisheries, palm and livestock harness the region’s natural resources in a sustainable way to provide compelling growth returns. Just how strong are these returns?
QL was founded 25 years ago. Since listing in 2000 our market value has multiplied 25 times and we have delivered over 20% Compound Annual Growth Rate in earnings. An explanation for the company’s success can be found in our name: Quan Li, or With Value For All. It’s how we do business. We practice win-win propositions, and it works. Visit our website at ql.com.my and find out about a company going places in the ASEAN region.
