What did Investors in People contribute?

Impact

SCIPSI’s journey towards IiP formally started in 2008. SCIPSI was recognized for the first time as Investors in People in 2009. For the past 3 years, SCIPSI has seen the benefit in valuing people in the organization through the investors in people.

Because of the inherent improvements in processes while journeying with IiP, SCIPSI has succeeded in increasing productivity, improving health and safety practices, and reducing damage and pilferages.

We would like to believe that even prior to the IiP journey, we have been implementing very good programs for our employees. We were not confident, however, whether the programs that we were implementing are enough to keep our employees motivated or keep the industrial peace.

One of the things that IiP did for us, was to give us the confidence that what we have to do is “plan, do, review” and make sure that each of our employees understands their job, how their job impacts the organization and how they can contribute towards the success of the organization. (Bob Munasque, SCIPSI General Manager)

SCIPSI continues to increase its productivity from 17 moves per net hour in 2007. The current target is 20 moves per net hour and actual performance is 20 – 21 moves per net hour. We expect to increase our productivity further to 22 moves per net hour by the end of 2015.

SCIPSI has been cited for several awards such as:

• Best Family Welfare Program – by the Department of Labor and Employment (Region 12) in October 2010;• Best Labor Management Cooperation Practitioner – by the Department of Labor and Employment in 2009; and• SSS Employer of the Year for SOCSARGEN Area in September 2010.

In 2012 SCIPSI has been nominated for the Department of Labor and Employment’s “Seal of Excellence” under their Incentivizing Compliance Program for being in full compliance with the general labor standards, occupational health and safety standards, and other labor mechanisms.

Somehow, since we started IiP, I had a lot of pleasant surprises…Like the Safety Milestone Recognition Award, being recognized as one of the Best LMC Practitioner in Region XII, as having the Best Family welfare Program in Region XII...

But what surprises me most is the “obvious” enthusiasm of our employees in our company activities – whether it be outing or trainings or port clean-up or a simple motorcade…

I can say that our employees are happier now… Not because we raised their salaries substantially. No, we did not.

But because of the formula that is in IiP – that is, make sure that people understand the objective of the company, that people understand their jobs or what is required of them, and they know how they can contribute to the attainment of the company’s objectives.

In short, our people are happier now because they know, no matter what their jobs are, they are able to contribute and their contribution is valuable to the company… (Bob Munasque, SCIPSI General Manager)

5In-Focus Pangarap

“Bringing the world of internet into the classroom connects learning with "real life" and validates the student’s technology culture as a rich environment for learning.” In this context, South Cotabato Integrated Port Services, Inc. (SCIPSI), in cooperation of Department of Education (DEPED), jointly provides a Computer Literacy Program with a theme of -“Building Classrooms Without Walls: Maximizing the Internet & Creating Online Resources.”

Held at General Santos City High School (GSCHS) on two batches (April 10-11 for elementary teachers and April 12-13 for high school teachers). The participants were composed of forty-five (45)

pantalan.

diverse elementary teachers from Labangal Elementary School, Saavedra Saway Central Elementary School, and Saludin Anas Elementary School; and forty (40) high school teachers solely from Labangal National High School; in which all schools are located in General Santos City. The facilitators came from NetLearn Trainor and ICTSI Foundation Representatives.

Two days worthwhile training with the essential objectives of (a) providing an overview and latest updates of ICT Integration in education; (b) learn and develop different strategies in using and maximizing the internet

inside the classroom; and (c) review of basic internet concepts and learn to troubleshoot common internet related problems. To keep the training more dynamic and interactive, different methodologies have been set out such as series of lecture and discussion, hands-on, coaching, and realistic simulation.

SCIPSI believes that providing this kind of training, students as well as teachers could able to better-equip themselves with ample knowledge and ability to use computer and internet efficiently which enhances students learning experiences and provides an effective teaching tool for our teachers.
