Protective functions

Protection of the surface is one of the most required properties of a coating

We consider here protection against Mechanical degradation (Mar, micro-abrasion) Chemical attacks (including oxidation and corrosion) Degradation by dirt and daily use

Possible coatings

Common coatings (varnish): organic Acrylate, epoxy, polyurethane

Modern coatings: hardcoats Hybride coatings organic-inorganic nanostructure Combine properties of both organic and inorganic materials

Case CEBO

CEBO Automotive (Ingelmunster) refurbishes cast aluminium parts from oldtimer cars

They use an in-house developped blasting and peening process to render the surface of the components in their original state

Question of CEBOCan we apply a protective coating to the refurbished surfaces which is invisible, but protects the surface?

High temperature resistant (no yellowing) Mechanically strong coating Protection against chemicals and dirt

Case CEBO

Advice for CEBO

From the tests appeared the best coatings for the application of CEBO

Hybrid sol gel (thermal curing) Silazane coating

Final coating: Hybrid sol gel Economic Easy to apply (brush or sponge) Thermal curing at 100 – 130 °C

General Conclusion

Modern hybrid coatings are high quality coatings for the protection of plastic and metal products.

Further functionalization such as anti-fingerprint or easy-to-clean is possible

Application and curing of the coatings is analogue to other coatings.
