    Herbert Geor#e %ells was born in&'(( in Bromley" )n#land into afamily where there was littlemoney to spare* his father ran asmall shop and played cricketprofessionally and his motherworked as a housekeeper. Thefamily+s financial situation

    meant that %ells had to work fromthe a#e of fourteen to supporthimself throu#h education. Hissuccess at school won him a freeplace to study at a colle#e of

By &'12 %ells had become a full-time writer and lived comfortably from his work. Hetraveled a lot and kept homes in the south of$rance and in ,ondon" where he died in &13(.%ells wrote about 34 works of fiction andcollections of stories* many books and shorterworks on political" social and historical matters"

    The stran#er who wrapped up fromhead to foot came early one winter+sday in $ebruary. He lived in the innwithout #ivin# a name. !lthou#h theroom was warn" the stran#er didn+t

    want to put off his hat and coat. Healways held the napkin over thelower part of his face. The top ofhis head above his blue #lasses wascovered by a white banda#e" and thatanother covered his ears" leavin#nothin# of his face to be seene8cept his pink" pointed nose.

    9ometimes the innkeeper+s wife"Mrs. Hall" tried to talk to him" butit seemed that the stran#er didn+tenoy the company of others. Heusually locked himself in the roomand watched out the window. nethin# he only cared was his bo8es

    which he put at the station. !ftersome days" his bo8es arrived. Thestran#er came down the steps andpicked up the smaller case. 9uddenlythe carrier+s do# #rowled and bithim. He #ot hurt" but he didn+t wantanybody to see his wound.

    ten minutes later" thedoctor ran out the room withwhite face. He told to thevicar that the stran#er hadno arm under his sleeve.%ow;; That was sounbelievable;;

    In %hit Monday mornin#" Mr.and Mrs. Hall heard a voicedownstairs. They woke up but theydidn+t see anyone. They heard thedrawer was opened" and then theirfound out that housekeepin# moneywas stolen; !lmost at the sametime" they found the stran#erwasn+t in his room. Mr. and Mrs.Hall called the police. Theysuspected that the thief was thestran#er.

    appeared " holdin# theirnecks. The invisible man saidthat if they want to leavesafely " they should do whathe said.Mr. /uss and Mr. Buntin#+s

    invisible man. !lthou#h Mr.Hu8ter and Mr. Hall tried tohelp them catch Mr. Marvelwho ran with their clothes.But they still couldn+tdefeat the invisible man;

    !fter runnin# a lon# way"Mr. Marvel was e8tremelytired" and he thou#ht hecouldn+t run anymore; But theinvisible man said that hewill =help> him run faster;

    voice said =help me;-emp> Itwas hard to believe for him.The voice said to him that hewas Griffin. But emplau#hed. It+s impossible. Howcould a man become invisibleThey all calmed down for a

    while. emp understood alittle more about theinvisible man by his story inthe paper. !nd Griffin toldhim the story of hisscientific e8periments tomake emp know how and why he

    became invisible.

    emp took sometime to e8plainto /olonel !dye what hadhappened. They decided to catchhim in every possible way. !ndthey needed do#s because do#scould smell him. ?eople wholive in the town hei#htened

    vi#ilance.

    up an iron bar. Mr. %icksteed" a @uiet" harmless

    man on his way home from work hadseen an iron bar walkin# byitself" and had turned to followit. ?erhaps the invisible man

    ima#ined that he was one ofhunter. 9o he attacked him" brokehis arm" knock him down and beathis head to pieces.

    The invisible man must known hewas a hunted man. emp wasreadin# a stran#e letter. It saidemp will be dead today. empthou#ht that the invisible manwrote it. 9o he ran# the bell forhis servant" and told her to #oround the house immediately" andsee that all the windows were

    shut.
