Fourth Sunday of Lent 5 th / 6 th March 2016 Vol. 34 No. 13 In today’s Gospel we hear the parable of the Prodigal Son. Contemporary studies offer fresh perspectives on this and other perhaps all-too- familiar stories. Should today’s parable be re- named “The Prodigal Father” or “the Dutiful Son” or “The Father and Two Sons”? Certainly we must pay as much attention to the father’s interaction with his older son as with his younger. The fact that the parable comes to no definitive conclusion invites us to stay with the questions it raises about repentance, forgiveness and fellowship. Paul and Sonia Tanham are

celebrating their 60th wedding

anniversary on the 19th August.

They came to the Holy Rosary

Parish in 1966 with four children

and two more children were born

while they lived in Woodlands. All

of their six children and seven of

their grandchildren have been

educated in Holy Rosary school,

Siena, Marist Brothers and now

Newman College. Paul and Sonia

have been part of the Holy Rosary

Parish for the past 48 years and

they have seen many changes over

the years including the building of

the church. They look forward to

many more years at the church

and in the area.

In today’s Gospel we hear the parable of the Prodigal Son. Contemporary studies offer fresh perspectives on this and other perhaps all-too-familiar stories. Should today’s parable be re-named “The Prodigal Father” or “the Dutiful Son” or “The Father and Two Sons”? Certainly we must pay as much attention to the father’s interaction with his older son as with his younger. The fact that the parable comes to no definitive conclusion invites us to stay with the questions it raises about repentance, forgiveness and fellowship. [Break Open the Word]

Evangeline’s story : Creating new connections

to traditional culture

‘We are God's work of art, created in Christ

Jesus to live the good life as from the beginning

he meant us to live it." Ephesians 2:10.

Evangeline (25) is a proud young Ramingining

woman living in the small community of Beswick

(Wugularr) in the Northern Territory. Like many

remote First Australian communities, Beswick

faces a range of complex ongoing challenges, and

many people in the town feel disempowered by

poorly conceived policies and decisions.

When Evangeline left high school after Year 11

she tried a few career options without success and

soon felt dispirited. “But by the time I was 22, I

really started to think about doing something

positive with my life,” she says.

So when she was offered a position as an

Artsworker at the Djilpin Arts Ghunmarn Culture

Centre in Beswick, Evangeline recognised a path

to a new future.

The community-owned venture is supported by

Caritas Australia’s Development of Cultural

Enterprise program. It brings together Elders and

young people, like Evangeline, so new

generations can learn traditional skills and

understand cultural knowledge through sharing

art, storytelling, dance and song – practices that

are central to traditional culture.

In the three years since joining the Centre,

Evangeline has truly flourished. “This opportunity

has helped me turn my life into something more

positive,” she says.

Now a Senior Arts worker, Evangeline is

committed to helping her community stay

connected to its culture. “Culture is our identity

and how we understand ourselves,” she explains.

“It’s important for us young people to be able to

learn these skills and then we can pass them on

when we are old.”

Please donate to Project Compassion 2016 and help First Australians in remote

communities of Australia gain new skills and renewed passion to preserve and

celebrate traditional culture.

Laetare Sunday

Most Catholics today are used to the Mass being conducted in English, and they hardly ever think about the fact that Latin remains the official language of the Catholic Church. But occasionally, Latin reasserts itself, as it does in the case of Laetare Sunday.

Laetare Sunday is the popular name for the Fourth Sunday in Lent. Laetare means "Rejoice" in Latin, and the Introit (entrance antiphon) in both the Traditional Latin Mass and the Novus Ordo is Isaiah 66:10-11, which begins "Laetare, Jerusalem" ("Rejoice, O Jerusalem").

Because the midpoint of Lent is the Thursday of the third week of Lent, Laetare Sunday has traditionally been viewed as a day of celebration, on which the austerity of Lent is briefly lessened. The passage from Isaiah continues, "rejoice with joy, you that have been in sorrow," and on Laetare Sunday, the purple vestments and altar cloths of Lent are set aside, and rose ones are used instead.
