To launch our Global Leaders Program Masterclass Series, we will
hear from two of Australia’s leading experts in International Law.
Professor Mary Crock and Associate Professor Emily Crawford,
from the University of Sydney, will give students an introduction to
professional practice and research in the topical and socially
conscious areas of International Criminal Law and Refugee Law.
Students will have an opportunity to ask questions, and can learn
about joining our 2021 Global Leaders Program in International Law,
delivered by the Office of Global Engagement and the University of
Sydney Law School.

Guest Speaker Biographical Details
Professor Mary CrockLaw, solicitor and Accredited Specialist in Immigration Law. Her
expertise spans immigration, citizenship and refugee law,
administrative and constitutional law, public international law,
particularly human rights and international refugee law, and
comparative law. She has published 13 books (including a leading
text on Australian immigration and refugee law), over 70 refereed
articles and book chapters and many other pieces; delivered
hundreds of public lectures and has been awarded over 2.2 million
dollars in research grants. Her research has been cited frequently in
Australia’s Federal Courts and High Court and she has given
evidence before a many parliamentary hearings in Australia and
(once) in Canada. She has worked as adviser to the Australian
Senate (Inquiry into Australia’s Refugee and Humanitarian Program,
2000); consultant to the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity
Commission (on immigration detention); and consultant to the
Royal Commission into Child Sex Abuse (on children in immigration
detention). She is frequently consulted by, and contributes opinion
pieces to, the national and international media.
Associate Professor Emily CrawfordEmily Crawford, BA(Hons), LLB, PhD, is an Associate Professor at the
University of Sydney Law School, where she teaches and researches
in international law, international humanitarian law and
international criminal law. She has published widely in the field of
international humanitarian law, including two monographs (The
Treatment of Combatants and Insurgents under the Law of Armed
Conflict (OUP 2010) and Identifying the Enemy: Civilian
Participation in Hostilities (OUP 2015) and a textbook (International
Humanitarian Law (with Alison Pert, 2nd edition, CUP 2020), and is
currently working on her third monograph, on the impact of non-
binding instruments in international humanitarian law. She is an
associate of the Sydney Centre for International Law at the
University of Sydney, and a co-editor of the Journal of International
Humanitarian Studies.
