WELCOME EVERYONE!

Dear IFMSA Family,

On behalf of AECS-Catalonia, we are really happy to invite you to the first edition of Go

SCORP Barcelona which is going to take place from the 4th to the 18th of July 2015 in

the centre of our capital, Barcelona. Volunteering with children, social programme,

trainings, sightseeing and loads of fun!

Since we discovered this volunteering project last year we’ve been determined to develop

this beautiful initiative here in Catalonia, so we encouraged a group of people from AECS

and started working on it!

We are really proud to say that we have an amazing OC that is working a lot in order to

offer you the opportunity to live an unforgettable experience: volunteering with children,

social program, trainings, sightseeing and loads of fun are waiting for you. Do not let them

tell you!

Having said this, we invite you to go through this booklet where you’ll find the information

on how to participate, what our Go SCORP will be like and also a few curiosities about our

land.

Green hugs,

Marta Teller and Alba Bassets

OC Coordinators

WHAT IS Go SCORP ABOUT?

A little bit of history

This project aims to reunite all humanitarian SCORP projects from around the world into a

unique platform database accessible to all SCORPions worldwide. It was created in Tunisia

5 years ago in the March Meeting, during the SCORP session. In the beginning it included

two humanitarian projects, from Romania and Tunisia, and the first exchange was

successfully completed when one Saudi Arabian student travelled to Romania.

During the August meeting in Macedonia, a Small Working Group (SWG) worked on

developing the project further more. They set the criteria for the projects that should be

included under Go SCORP, the exchange conditions and the format of the website that will

be designed for Go SCORP. This innovative idea was awarded with the first prize during

that meeting; it was voted as the best SCORP project among all other international

projects. During the Eastern Mediterranean Regional (EMR) meeting in Bahrain in January

2010, Go SCORP won the first prize again as the best EMR project.

Go SCORP was presented to become a transnational project and during the upcoming 2010

MM in Thailand, the decision was made. As Go SCORP keep harvesting more international

awards, more countries are aware of the initiative and have expressed their willingness to

join the project.

The best thing about Go SCORP is that there are no priorities, and it has a small

application fee! We want to give medical students a great opportunity to both discover

new places and exercise their sense of humanitarianism.

Nowadays, 8 NMOs are involved in this project: Italy, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Egypt,

Romania, Tunisia etc. This is going to be the first edition of Go SCORP Barcelona, and we

want you to join us and enjoy this awesome experience!

REGISTRATION

The registration process will begin on the 8th of April until the 5th of May. Any IFMSA

member is allowed to apply.

There are a total of 12 spots, as we want to have a small group of people in order to

create a real team and take care of every incoming in a personal way.

Participants will be chosen according to the answers on the registration form, which you

can find attached on our Official Site (http://goscorp.blogspot.com.es/).

Selection criteria will be based mostly on motivation and level of English. Also, we’ll

prioritize interculturality when choosing the participants, as we want to give the

opportunity to come to as many different NMOs as possible, and to create an appropriate

environment for ideas sharing and intercultural learning.

Based on the expenses of the whole event, we set up a 250 € fee, which includes:

- Volunteering program

- Workshops and external talks

- Accommodation

- Two meals per day

- Cultural and Social activities

- Transportation within Barcelona

ACCOMODATION

The accommodation for this year GoSCORP will be in a cosy apartment located in the

North part of Barcelona, just 10 minutes away from the centre of the city by taking the

public transportation.

All the participants will stay together in the same building. It has one big and completely

equipped apartment with 2 bathrooms, a huge living room and a kitchen.

Our choice has been conditioned by the way we want to approach this GoSCORP. We want

participants to have their own space so they can organize their selves in the best way for

them.

AGENDA & VOLUNTEERING PROJECT

GoScorp is a volunteering project that allows medical students from all over the world to

share their passion for helping others, discovering at the same time a new city and

exchanging experiences between themselves.

Our project in Barcelona consists in teaching English to children and teenagers that are

in risk of social exclusion and otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity for meeting young

foreign people and breaking interpersonal barriers. In a world that day after day is more

international, English is an essential tool for professional and personal growth. In SCORP

we believe in the equality of chances for everyone and we have decided to start

improving and sharing our ideals in our own city.

During the first weekend, participants will

attend different workshops that are aimed to

prepare them to go to the social centres and

deal with children and young people that

have a special background and that face

specific problems in their life.

From Monday to Friday, participants will be divided into smaller groups for the

volunteering work, so they can really get involved into the activities and feel useful during

the whole programme. They’ll spend half a day working with children (morning or

afternoon, depending on the group), and then we’ve prepared different social and cultural

activities in Barcelona that they will be able to enjoy, always accompanied by our amazing

OC and other volunteers from AECS-Catalonia.

Detailed agenda will be sent to you in the future. For the moment, we can only add that

some surprises are about to come! ;)

SOCIAL PROGRAMME

And of course, just like in any other IFMSA event, we will have an incredible Social

Programme. Talking about Barcelona’s breathtaking beaches, unique buildings and

innovative flair is not enough, you need to experience what we consider the most

beautiful Mediterranean city. That’s why we offer you the chance to discover each

and every one of its secrets and corners.

During your stay you will be able to explore this amazing city in a whole new and

surprising way. A part from a special sightseeing, party nights and the unavoidable

NFDP; we are preparing an awesome social program that will make the attendee’s

experience unforgettable… of course most of it should remain secret and you’ll

only get to know the details when the time comes. We don’t want to spoil the best

bits, do we?

ABOUT CATALONIA We are pleased to introduce you our beloved nation. Catalonia is an autonomous

community located in the north-east of Spain.

Our culture has developed its own identity over the centuries and it stands out for its own

and unique traditions: The Castellers, declared by UNESCO to be amongst the Masterpieces

of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, la Patum, les sardanes… These are just a

few of the things that make us a proud and charming nation.

Traditionally, art and thought trend deep into Catalonia as a result of the country's

geographic location, open to the Mediterranean and European countries, and also due to

the leading spirit and attraction created by Barcelona.

The cultural offer in Catalonia is so overwhelming that you wouldn't even know where to

begin: unique buildings in Barcelona (known as “the capital of Modernism”) such as the

Sagrada Familia or the Palau de la Música Catalana, the striking archaeological ruins at

Tarraco and Empúries, the churches of the Boí Valley in Lleida… all declared World

Heritage sites by the UNESCO. Furthermore you can enjoy the exhibitions of world-class

museums like the National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC) and the Dalí Theatre-Museum

in Figueres.

The breathtakingly beautiful beaches, its world-class gastronomy and the work of famous

artists such as Gaudí and Dalí make this region one of Spain’s most popular destinations.

ABOUT BARCELONA After a brief introduction to our land, now it’s time to introduce the city we are setting

the scene in, Barcelona!

Barcelona is the biggest Catalan city and has a dynamic personality of its own. Located

between mountains and sea, it's the perfect Mediterranean city to relax in, stroll around

and enjoy. The city came to prominence during the late 19th and early 20th century, but

it wasn't until 1992, when the Olympic Games put it on the world map, that its popularity

exploded and expanded. From then on, Barcelona was discovered to be a city full of social

interaction, cultural vitality and night-life, open to our multicultural world.

The millenary history, the modernist creativity and the charm of each neighbourhood

make Barcelona idyllic place to visit, party, spend a relaxing weekend and even to live in.

With a combination of architectural heritage

that will leave you breathless, Barcelona

offers the work of some of the most well-

know architects from the past century, such

as Antoni Gaudí and his modernist buildings.

We are sure you are all going to enjoy

Barcelona as much as we do in our daily life!
