Switch Off How does saving electricity help the environment?
Most electricity is produced by burning fossil fuels like coal, oil
and natural gas. This produces carbon dioxide and other emissions
that add to the greenhouse gas already in the atmosphere,
contributing to global warming. And what is being done about it? A
small amount of electricity is generated from hydro schemes
(rivers, dams, ocean waves and tides), a smaller amount from wind
power, solar power and geothermal power plants. All these produce
practically no carbon dioxide or other harmful emissions and so are
good for the environment.

You can implement some energy-saving measures immediately, such
as turning off and unplugging unused lights and appliances. Shut
off and unplug electronic devices, such as cell phone chargers,
computers, televisions, video and DVD players and gaming consoles,
when you are not using them. Plugged in, these devices use stand-by
power, which can amount to 5 to 10 percent of your home's energy
consumption. Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact
fluorescent bulbs, which provide the same amount of light while
using less energy. Teach kids how to save hot water and electricity
by taking shorter showers and turning off the water while brushing
their teeth, and have them remind everyone in the household to do
the same. Get kids to help you plant a few trees in your yard. As
the trees grow, they'll provide shade for the house, which will
keep it cool and reduce your need to use air conditioning in the
summer, and they'll create a barrier against cold winds during the
winter.
