One of the highlights of the first edition of the book was the inclusion of college students' ideas and stories through student quotes. Students' quotes helped the content in the book come alive. We invite you to please share your perspectives and ideas by answering a few short questions about leadership. We will select quotes to include in the book from the responses we gather here. You can access the survey at this link. If you have any questions or encounter any issues with the survey, contact Paige at [email protected].

Being a facilitator requires a minimum semester-long commitment. Responsibilities include transporting FSU students in Center vans, so having a valid driver license, current auto insurance, and a good driving history are all needed. Other responsibilities include recruiting, educating, supervising and encouraging the students on the project, helping them learn more about the needs of the community, discover what they are passionate about, and inspire them to continue volunteering. Interested? Take a look at the Community Outreach Program website for more information or to access the application. Contact Heather Stitely if you have questions or need any additional information. If you are interested, complete the facilitator application and return it via email to [email protected] or drop it off at the Center for Leadership and Social Change at your earliest convenience. FINANCE/ACCOUNTING/BUSINESS MANAGEMENT INTERNSHIP Tallahassee Food Network (TFN), a nonprofit working to grow community-based food systems is looking for a finance, accounting, business, or management intern who is looking for a cool service learning opportunity. A few of TFN's initiatives include iGrow-Whatever You Like, a Frenchtown-based entrepreneurial youth empowerment and urban farming program; Collards and Cornbread, a monthly gathering for food movement players to connect, learn from, and collaborate with each other; and Farmers' Market Promotion. This intern will work with the TFN treasurer to manage budgeting, invoicing, payments, bookkeeping, and financial reporting. This is a great opportunity to gain real-word experience with financial spreadsheets, QuickBooks, collaboration, and team management. Contact Nathan Ballentine @ 850-322-0749 or [email protected] for more information. LAKE HALL CLEAN UP Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park is inviting the public to join staff for a cleanup on the shoreline of Lake Hall on July 19 from 7am to 9am. All Jon boats with electric motors, kayaks and canoes are able to participate for a fun paddle for all ages and levels. Park kayaks are available to volunteers at no cost on a first come basis, but check for availability at the Ranger Station before driving down to the Recreation Area. Be sure to bring life jackets and whistles which are required to be on board. For more information, visit www.floridastateparks.org/maclaygardens or call 850-487-4115. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO TUTOR ENGLISH (ESL) Two or three volunteers are needed to tutor English to Mexican students in an English as a Second Language program. The class meets on Tuesday evenings from 7 pm to 8pm at the Berean Christian Church at 6200 Blountstown Highway. The class will meet 6 times beginning Tuesday, June 18 and ending on Tuesday, July 30. Each tutor works with 2 to 3 students. No previous experience is necessary and teaching materials are provided for each class. Contact Dr. Jon Dalton at [email protected] for more information or to volunteer.

KIDS UNITED TOGETHER (KUT) KUT is a nonprofit youth center in Apalachicola, Florida. Kids served by this organization range in age from 5-18 years. KUT has been open for two years, operating in a gym sponsored by the city. The organization is in need of funding for repairs on the facility and for activity equipment. In an attempt to fundraise, KUT is holding a two weekend Haunted House this October. All admission proceeds will go to the center. KUT is fully insured and has been given permission to move forward by their mother nonprofit, Franklin's Promise. The next step is to stand before the county commissioner at an upcoming meeting to get their permission and support. Before the meeting, there needs to be a full plan of execution, along with reliable adult resources and volunteers to help build the Haunted House and put together a Halloween mini festival for the younger children. If you can help by volunteering your time or donating materials or funds, contact Sunny Stultz-Dunaway at 843-957-3248 or [email protected].

ART ALLEYS Art Alley participants have cleaned and greened two alleyways in the Gaines Street and All Saints area in Tallahassee with the goal of creating “art/plant zones” and other spaces that broadly relate to the region. Volunteers and students are beginning to research other green spaces in the neighborhood and collaborate with local businesses and land owners to determine the most eco-friendly environment to create. Volunteers are needed to assist with watering, weeding, planting and planning events and also interacting with the homeless that frequent the alleys and surrounding neighborhood. Depending on the number of volunteers, we may plan an art event this summer, 2013. Every First Friday this summer we will set up the Doodle Cart and provide other interactive art activities off Gaines Street. For more information and to volunteer contact Paul Rutkovsky at [email protected].

ACCEPTING FALL APPLICATIONS: Do you want to make a lasting contribution to a local nonprofit while earning 6 or 12 elective academic credits? Are you looking for work experience related to your major? Are you interested in enhancing your professional skills? If you answered yes to these questions, you should consider applying to participate in the Nonprofit Internship Program. This selective program is designed for students from degree programs that do not offer an internship opportunity for academic credit. If you are from such a program and would like to gain valuable experience in a nonprofit organization, please apply. Examples of internship focus areas include: child development, juvenile justice, health services, education, counseling, elder services, domestic abuse, poverty, homelessness, environment, government, disaster service and more. Selected students will serve either full-time (36 hours/week for 12 credit hours) or half-time (18 hours/week for 6 credit hours), for the full 15 week semester. A limited number of internships are offered for the fall, spring, and summer semesters, and applications are considered on a first come, first serve basis until the internships are filled. Fall 2013 applications are due no later than Friday, August 9th by 5pm. Applications can be submitted via email to Heather Stitely at [email protected] or dropped off at the front desk of the Center for Leadership and Social Change, on the first floor of the Dunlap Student Success Center. For more information or to access an application, visit our website at: http://thecenter.fsu.edu/Programs/NonProfit-Internship-program.
