Society of America on 28 April 1945, inPittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. It was thebrainchild of Richard Rimbach of theInstruments Publishing Company, who beganpublishing “Instruments and ControlSystems” in 1927. Interestingly, Mr. Rimbachstarted Pollution Equipment News in 1968and it continues to be published by thefamily-run organization today.

GFC300 can be ordered as a single, two independent or a dual flow computer. It canvery accurately measure volume, compensated volume and mass of liquids and gases.Or volume and mass of steam, saturated or superheated, in a very large ranges ofpressures and temperatures. GFC300 calculates density and compressibility factors witha very high accuracy.
Each channel has one flow input that accepts pulses with 24VDC / 20 mA power forthe pulse sensor and 4-20 mA loop power flow signal.
30 points linearization for each pulse input can significantly improve the flow metersperformances. Flow meter calibration tables can be entered there.
Each channel has one 4-20 mA loop power input for temperature or density and onefor pressure with a typical error of 0.01% full scale for each.
The isolated analog output of each channel can be ordered as 4-20 mA loop power,0-5V or 0-10V. It can be programmed to represent rate, rate A+B, pressure ortemperature.
The isolated pulse output of each channel is sinking open drain 100V / 100 mA andcan represent total, total A–B or total A+B, producing pulses of frequencies up to 10kHz.
Each channel has also one relay for 250VAC / 5 A with programmable hysteresis forrate, rate A+B, pressure or temperature
Both flow rates are seven digit, totals are eight digit. There are separate units for flowrate and total for each channel. Many volume and mass units are listed in specialmenus. Flow rate and total for each channel have independent programmable decimalplaces. GFC300 has many preset liquids, gases and temperature transmitters whichsimplifies its programming.
Power can be ordered as 85-250 VAC, or 12VDC or 24 VDC, all with high isolation,surge, reverse polarity, under-voltage, over-current and short circuit protection. GFC300has a bright transmissive color graphic display with a white back-light and easy to usescroll drop list menus. Fully compliant, programmable RS485, 1/8 load, MODBUS RTUfor baud rates up to 115 200 makes GFC300 highly network-able. Multilevel menus, thefirst of which can be locked make programming easy, simple and protected.
Size is DIN 72 x144 mm panel mount, weight is 0.45 kg (1.0 lb).All software options can be enabled on the field with passwords.

Industrial instruments, which became widely used during WorldWar II, continued to play an ever-greater role in the expansion oftechnology after the war. Individuals like Rimbach and others involved
in industry saw a need for the sharing of information aboutinstruments on a national basis, as well as for standards anduniformity. The Instrument Society of America addressed that need.
Albert F. Sperry, chairman of Panelit Corporation, became ISA’sfirst president in 1946. In that same year, the Society held its first
conference and exhibit in Pittsburgh. The firststandard, RP 5.1 Instrument Flow PlanSymbols, followed in 1949, and the firstjournal, which eventually became today’sInTech, was published in 1954.
The Founders’ Mission: “The object of theSociety shall be to advance the arts andsciences connected with the theory, design,manufacture, and use of instruments in thevarious sciences and technologies.”
Today’s Mission: “The mission of ISA asthe global society for instrumentation, systems,and automation is to:
“Maximize the effectiveness of ISAmembers and other practitioners andorganizations worldwide to advance and apply
the science, technology, and allied arts of instrumentation, systems,and automation in all industries and applications.
“Identify and promote emerging technologies and applications.

In the years following, ISA continued to expand its products andservices, increasing the size and scope of the ISA conference andexhibition, developing symposia, offering professional developmentand training, adding to technical Divisions, and even producing filmsabout measurement and control.
Membership grew from 900 in 1946 to 6,900 in 1953, and todayISA Members number 28,000 from almost 100 countries.
Recognizing ISA’s international reach and the fact that itstechnical scope had grown beyond instruments, in the fall of 2000, theISA Council of Society Delegates approved a legal name change toISA—The Instrumentation, Systems, and Automation Society.
In October 2008, the Council voted to rename the Society to theInternational Society of Automation, a name that reflects our globalnature and inclusive membership base. With our global growth, wecontinue to set the standard for automation now more than ever. Andour name says it all.

Tesoro Anacortescloses due to accident
San Antonio, April 30, 2010 — On April 2, Tesoro’s AnacortesWashington refinery experienced a fire which fatally injured sevenemployees, and on April 30, Tesoro announced that it is temporarilyshutting down all processing units at the refinery.
“The Tesoro family deeply regrets the tragic accident that tookseven lives and impacted so many other people. There are no wordsthat can adequately express our sense of loss nor the impact on thecommunities and schools in the area,” said Bruce Smith, TesoroChairman, President and CEO in a report distributed by B2iTechnologies, Inc.

As the S & P chair, I am on astandards reviewer list fromheadquarters. This month I wasdirected to two standards for my review.These standards are: ISA-d77.82.01,Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)Control Systems and ISA-d77.14.01,Fossil Fuel Power Plant Steam TurbineControls (Draft 11). Both standardsreviews are due May 20. I am not anexpert in either of these two standards.Maybe some of our members are.

There are many ISA standards activities happening in June inSummerlin, Nevada. On the left side of the main page is a column of selections toother pages. At the bottom of those selections is “Calendar.” SelectCalendar and you will be at the Calendar page. In the middle andtowards the top of the Calendar page is another scroll-down menu“Search by Event Type.” Select “Standards Meetings” and then select“Find.” This will take you to a searchable list of standards committeesof title, times, and locations.
I am leading a Standards and Practices subcommittee to develop ahypothetical safety-related product to show compliance to IEC 61508.The subcommittee has stalled out over the past few months. The reasonhas been the lack of systems engineering experience of thesubcommittee. So, I recruited a systems engineer with much of theneeded experience to keep this effort going. There has been goodprogress this month. I expect the subcommittee will have someinteresting work products to put on the ISALA.org website soon. Ifthere is room in next month’s newsletter, then I will make a report onthe latest progress.
