  • Flying with Data Link

Procedures do differ and you must be prepared

    Pacific

Wants CPDLC position report after FIR entry to confirm CDA

    Atlantic

Gander and Shanwick maintain nearly identical procedures

If aircraft is tagged for Reduced Longitudinal

Gander sends NDA 80 min prior to 30 West for eastbound

Prestwick sends NDA 60 min prior to 30 West for westbound

Preparing for RNP 4 and Reduced Lateral Separation

    14

    Pacific versus Atlantic

  • Flying with Data Link

    Be prepared Training and Knowledge

Uncertainty or inattention lead to errors

Operational errors are reported by ATC to the Central Reporting Agency

ATC will want answers as to why there were errors

    ATC or Network failures

    Fire in Gander Center

    Power failure at Arinc

    SITA GES failure

    Iridium outage/degrade

    15

    Operating Lessons Learned

  • Flying with Data Link

Do not include CPDLC/ADS-C codes unless you are authorized and intend to use it!

    FANS Block 10a/b J4J5/D1

    ATN Block 10a J1

    ATC Response Expectation

    Required Surveillance Performance

    Required Communication Performance

Crew expected to respond within 60 seconds

Human factors in managing processing of uplinks and downlinks

    16

    Operating Lessons Learned

  • Flying with Data Link

Crew failed to respond to uplinks

Pilot clearance: "Maintain FL340, At 0807 Climb To And Maintain FL360, Report Level at FL360". At 0746 the pilot WILCO'd the

climb. At 0747 they advised "Level FL360". Pilot reported that the

clearance was not displayed with the restriction to climb at 0807

Pilot was issued a restricted clearance: "Maintain FL350, At 1810 Climb To And Maintain FL370, Report Level at FL370". At 1749

the pilot WILCO'd the climb. At 1751 they advised "Level FL370".

Pilot reported that the clearance was not displayed with the

    restriction to climb at 1810
