Regardless of the Spring
Break weather, I am sure it
was nice for everyone to
enjoy time with family and
recharge for the remainder
of the 2015-16 school year.

A Message from Mr. Manciu
If you were not able to escape Michigan over spring break, you were subjected
to one last (hopefully) surprise from Old Man Winter. It is nice that there has
been a gentle warm up since returning to school.
Our SAT, ACT WorkKeys and PSAT testing days have gone well. All the
activities scheduled in the morning when our juniors were testing Tuesday, the
13th, were well coordinated for our freshman and sophomores who enjoyed
activities that included an Anti-Bullying Presentation, Service Learning Projects,
and a Healthy Relationships Presentation. Our seniors spent the morning in
three different sessions that included Resume and Interview Skills, Career
Readiness Activities, and Panel Interviews with former students now in college.
The juniors took the M-STEP (which replaced the Michigan Merit Exam) on April
19th and 20th.
The SAT make-up testing date is April 26th, and the ACT
WorkKeys make-up is April 27th.
IHS graduate and MSU alumna, Kylie Horrocks, was our keynote speaker at
the annual Senior Scholar Breakfast on the morning of April 20th. This breakfast
is in honor of the 43 Senior Scholars from the Class of 2016, based on a formula
using GPA and ACT scores.
Sincerely,
April 2016

NHS Aids Ionia County Animal Shelter The Ionia High School Chapter of the National Honor Society worked as a united front to aid the Ionia County Animal Shelter by
sponsoring a recent pet food and supplies drive from March 14th to the 18th. In addition, the members also collected $1,000 to
donate to the shelter for their ongoing needs of supplies, food, and medical treatments. Our mascot roamed the halls of the
school dropping off Puppy Chow (the human snack) to teachers and students in order to raise awareness of this special week. It
was a week to appreciate our own pets at home and to promote safe and happy pet adoptions through the Animal Shelter. Our
service projects are always an adventure; first the students vote on what they want to do, then off they go to inform, gather, and
rally the rest of the school. Special thanks to Mr. Doug Tackmann for loading up the activity bus with the help of NHS members:
Evelyn Velasco Madi Martorana, and John Vaarberg and then driving it to the shelter. We applaud Mr. Tackmann for the recent
shelter adoption of his dog, Lily. Justin Rickert along with other members continue to give to the Ionia County Animal Shelter
through their time in walking dogs, cleaning up, or in entertaining the herd of cats in the Kitty Kingdom room. Our teens truly
care for man's best friend!
IHS Forensics Team
Wraps up Another
Season Ionia Forensics ended their season with a
second place finish at the Holland Invitational.
Leading the way were seniors, Abby Read and
Zachary Ingraham. Abby finished her senior
year of Forensics with 4 first place trophies, one
second and one eighth. This places her as one
of the top 5 speakers in the State of Michigan in
the Impromptu category. Next year, Abby will
be competing for the Central Michigan
Chippewas. Zachary Ingraham also placed in
every tournament. He had one first place
trophy, 3 seconds, one fifth, and 1 sixth place.
This puts him in eigth place in the
Extemporaneous category throughout the state.
IHS Science Olympiad Team
Advances to States
Congratulations to the Science Olympiad team on a profound performance
at the Regional Science Olympiad tournament at Alma College on March
20th. The team placed third, missing second place by the narrowest of
margins. Team Captain, Matt Felice, lead the team to victory. This allows
the team to compete at the State Tournament at Michigan State University
on April 30th. As a whole, the team did exceptionally, but a few highlights
were Xavier Begerow and Kaitlyn Hickok placing 1st in Geologic Mapping,
an event on interpreting geologic maps and aquifers. Alexis Knoblock, and
Bobby Eppler placed 3rd in Protein Modeling, an event where they had to
construct a physical model of a protein before the event and another one
during the competition. Matt Felice and Bobby Eppler placed 3rd in
chemistry lab, an event where they were asked questions relating to
chemical reaction kinetics and gas laws. Matt Felice and Bobby Eppler placed
2nd in Disease detectives, an event where the students have to determine
disease effects and symptoms. Matt Felice and Owen Sweeney placed 3rd in
Electric vehicle, an event where the students had to build and construct an
electric vehicle that can stop at a predetermined distance
autonomously. Riley Mercer and Kaitlyn Hickok placed 4th in Wright stuff,
an event where the students constructed a plane capable of flight using only
a rubber band. Due to an accident their plane placed fourth, but prior to
that unfortunate crash they were easily in first place by more than double
the next placing.
A special thank you to James Merrifield, Sari Mercer, Stacy Knauss and Kyle
Ondersma for all of their help during the competition.

MADI LYNN
April
Student of the
Month
I nominated Madi in
recognition of the
leadership and work
ethic that she has shown
in my Humanitarian
Studies class. She
demonstrates a genuine
curiosity and care for the
world around her. Her
thoughtful questions and
responses never fail to
make a positive
contribution to class
discussions and naturally
lead her to a much
deeper understanding of
global issues and human
rights.

Senior Avery Baylis
Ionia High School senior Avery Baylis is a
wonder. In fact, he's taken on the moniker
of "One-Armed Wonder." Not only has
the star athlete excelled in three sports -
soccer, football, and basketball - during his
high school career, but Avery was also
offered and accepted a scholarship to play
soccer at Spring Arbor University next fall.
Avery was born missing an arm below one
of his elbows, but it never hindered his
passion for athletics and his tenacity on the
field. As an athlete, Avery has had
moments where people have treated him differently, at least initially. "Sometimes," he admits,
"people go easy on me, until I show them that they don't need to." This past fall he told a
reporter at the Ionia Sentinel Standard, "You can do anything. You just have to set your mind to
it and work at it and you can accomplish anything." It is his positive attitude, team spirit, and
resilience that has earned him the respect of all his coaches, teammates, and teachers.
His parents, Aaron and Sara Baylis, as well as his younger sister, sophomore Addison, couldn't be
prouder of Avery's accomplishments. Avery's accomplishments and kindness on and off the field
will long inspire the learning community of Ionia.
