IOWA ABC’S

A is for Amish

1. The Amish have been living in Iowa for more than 160 years.

2. The first Amish immigrant left Switzerland and came to America, they first settled in Pennsylvania, then came to Iowa.

3. Some towns the Amish settled in is Kalona and Decorah.

B is for Black Squirrel

1. Black squirrels are found in Moville, Correctionville, Cherokee, Red Oak, Shenandoah, and Council Bluffs.

2. Black squirrels commonly eat fruits, tree buds, nuts, acorns, and sometimes even bugs.

C is for Cyclones

1. The Cyclones football team are representing Iowa State University in college football.

2. The Iowa State Cyclones played football in 1892, but it didn’t become an official sport until 1894.

D is for Ducks

1. Duck live all around Iowa, they mostly live in ponds and lakes.

2. Ducks commonly live from two to twelve years.

E is for Eastern Gold Finch1. In Des Moines, Iowa, in May 1922 people voted for the Eastern Gold Finch as their state bird, and the Eastern Gold Finch was made the official state bird of Iowa.

2. The Eastern Gold Finch is now classified as the American Gold Finch, and has been called that name by many people ever since.

F is for Farms

1. The total number of farms in Iowa is 92,400.

2.Farming is a direct job to more than 24 million people .

G is for General Dodge House1. In 1869, Gen. Grenville M. Dodge built a amazing home at 605 Third Street.

2. The General Dodge House is located in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

H is for Hawkeyes1. The Iowa Hawkeyes are a football team that represents the University of Iowa.

2. The Hawkeyes have won different championships in three different sports, gymnastics, football, and field hockey.

I is for Ioway1. Iowa is named after the Ioway Indian tribe.

2.The Ioway Indian tribe had horses for hunting, the Ioway hunted buffalo, deer, elk, turkey, raccoon, black bear, and turtle.

J is for John Deere1. When John Deere turned 17 he left home to begin apprenticeship for a blacksmith.

2. Years later he begins a company and sells tractors and things all around Iowa.

1 The Kate Shelley Bridge is located in the Moingona Depot.

K is for Kate Shelley Bridge

2.Kate Shelley had crossed a bridge on her hands and knees to save a train full of people from crashing.

L is for Loess Hills

1.The Loess Hills are located in Glenwood, Mills County.

2.The Loess Hills stretch from Westfield, Iowa to Mound City, Missouri.

M is for the Mississippi River

1. The Mississippi River lies on the border of Iowa.

2. The Mississippi River is the largest river in North America.

N is for Neola

1. Neola is located in Pottawattamie County, Iowa.

2. Neola was established in 1882.

O is for Oak Tree

1. The Oak Tree is Iowa’s state tree, it was chosen as Iowa’s state tree in 1961.

P IS FOR POTTAWATTAMIE COUNTY

1. Pottawattamie County is located in Iowa and was established in 1847.

2.Pottawttamie County was originally named after a native American tribe that lived there.

1. Quimbly is located in Cherokee County, Iowa.

2 In 2,000 the population was 368.

R is for Reivers

1. The Iowa Western Reivers have been a college since 1966.

2. The Iowa Western Community college is located in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

S is for Sioux City

1. The Sioux City is located in the Western part of Iowa.

2. In 2010 the population was 82,684.

T is for Turkeys

1.Turkeys have lived in Iowa for more than 10 million years.

2.Turkey meat is Iowa’s most loved meat ever.

U is for Underwood

1. Underwood is a city located in Iowa.

2. The Underwood school once had only 130 kids, 72 were boys and 58 were girls.

V is for Volleyball

1. There is a Iowa Hawkeyes college that has a varsity volleyball team.

2. A facts about volleyball is you can only let the ball fall once before serving.

W is for Waterloo

1. Waterloo is a city located in Iowa.

2. In 2010 the population for Waterloo was 68,406.

X is for Xavier High School

1. The Xavier High School is located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

2. The Xavier High School is the only Catholic High School located in Cedar Rapids.

Y is for YMCA

1. The YMCA is located all over Iowa.

2. The YMCA is a workout place for adults, and has a swimming pool for children and adults.

Z is for Zuni

1. The Zuni lived in places all over Iowa.

2. The Zuni were an Indian tribe and are now located in New Mexico.
