Rural Angel Investing Course
A new video series and website, Strategies for Rural Angel Investing, guides stakeholders interested in Iowa’s emerg-ing rural investor networks for agricultural technology startups and strategic rural ventures. These Iowa State University Extension and Outreach resources are available as part of a grant sponsored project called the Iowa Rural Equity Project. Mark Edelman, ISU Extension and Outreach ag economist and project coordinator, conducted inter-views with managers from a dozen Iowa based venture capital funds and angel investor networks interested in ru-ral projects. Videos of the interviews give insight into legal requirements, due diligence, types of investments and deal flow. The "Strategies for Rural Angel Investing” video series and more information about the project can be found by visiting www.extension.iastate.edu/irep.
New Master Gardener Course Opens year’s course will for the second year in a row feature a flipped
classroom style where participants will learn about different
topics by touring and participating in workshops held through-
out the county. Then they will be responsible for watching pre-
recorded webinars and doing some study guide materials on
their own time. The class will run from the end of August to the
beginning of November. Those interested in the course can ap-
ply at https://mastergardenerhours.hort.iastate.edu/application

Sheep/Goat Weigh-In
Swine Tagging Day– IMPORTANT REMINDERS
Swine identification is scheduled for Saturday, May 4th from 7—10 a.m. at the Warren County Fairgrounds. Each hog will receive a USDA tag and must be ear notched. The cost of tags are $2 each and must be paid for that day. This applies for 4-H/FFA COUNTY ONLY hogs. Hogs attending the Iowa State Fair will still use a DNA tag at $8 per tag. The ID process for the Iowa State Fair will remain the same as previous years—reserve the tagger from the Extension office, tag the hog yourself, and input that hog’s ID information into 4HOnline. State Fair DNA tags will be accepted as official identification at the Warren County Fair.
IMPORTANT REMINDERS FOR TAGGING DAY:
Pigs must be handled, at all times, by a family member or responsible party designated by the family.
Pigs must be brought to the Superintendent for reading of ear notch and tagging of the pig. Pigs will not leave the trailer or transport vehicle while on the fairgrounds.
One ear tag per pig per exhibitor will be allowed.
Each pig needs to be identified by one exhibitor only.
Pigs need to be identified by the exhibitor prior to tagging. Please use a paint stick of different color to designate or distinguish each exhibitor’s pigs prior to getting to the tagging area.
15 pig maximum per exhibitor will be tagged and identified.
The Iowa Swine Verification Form 4-H 106F must be completed with ear notch, PB or crossbred, sex, ear tag number, ear tag location (L/R), tag color, PB breed, and color. This form will be completed by superintendents, verified by exhibitor or responsible party, and turned into Extension staff on tagging day.
If a gilt will be shown as a breeding gilt, a birthdate must be provided on the Iowa Swine Verification Form 4-H 106F on tagging day.
After tagging the exhibitor will complete paperwork with parent/guardian signature and turn into Extension staff with proper tag payment before leaving the fairgrounds.
Check 4HOnline before May 15th to verify that all information was inputted correctly. Use the pink copy of the ID form to cross-reference info, and select “verify” at the bottom of the screen for each animal.
Purebred pigs must have registration papers completed with exhibitor’s name as owner. Must provide the registration paper at weigh-in day at Fair. If papers are not presented at county fair weigh in, the pig will be asked to go home.
Warren County Produced forms are due on the last day of Entry week with the signature of the producer, tag number, and ear notch of the designated WCP pig.
