ROSALIE MACUMBER Rosalie was born March 28, 1938, at Denison, Iowa On December 16, 1956, Rosalie mar-ried James Macumber. Jim received his draft

notice for the United States Army one day before the wed-ding. Following Jim's basic training, Rosalie joined him while he served at Ft. Rucker, Alabama and then Ft. Belvoir, Virginia. The family made their home in Manilla. Rosalie was a devoted member of Trinity Lutheran Church volunteering in many capacities. Rosalie was a won-derful cook and baker, and she loved to feed her family and friends. She was committed to visiting residents at the Manilla Manor where she also did a lot of sewing and repair work on their clothing. Above all, she and Jim enjoyed their Airstream trailer. They trav-eled all over the United States and even made it into Canada. They were members of the Wally Byam Caravan Club Inter-national Unit and the North Iowa Unit. They became affiliates of the Iowa Unit in 1992. After the automobile accident in which her husband Jim was killed in 2014, Rosalie worked diligently to overcome her many injuries and surgeries. She was determined to return to their home and her longtime work at Ohde Funeral Home – and she accomplished both goals. Following a wonderful week-end with her siblings in Missouri, Rosalie suffered a massive stroke while shopping. She un-derwent surgery in Des Moines and then moved to Kavanaugh Hospice House, also in Des Moines. She died there on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at the age of 79 years, 4 months and 12 days.

At the Thursday evening Sandwich, Salad or Dessert Meal at the Pow Wow Rally in Tama, Pat Van Klompenburg brought a very tasty and popular dessert. Several asked for the recipe and Pat was willing to share it. Here is her recipe.

ALMOND BARS.

2 cups sugar 2 sticks butter (cut in to 8 pieces) 8 oz. almond paste (cut into small pieces) Pulse in food processor just until no small pieces remain Transfer to an electric mixer Add 2 slightly beaten eggs and 2 cups of flour Mix just until combined. Place in a 9"x13" baking pan, brush with 2 tsps of milk and sprinkle

with coarse sugar. Bake at 325 degrees for 35-40 minutes until slightly brown. Cool for 1 hour. They can be

frozen.

Needless to say, these didn’t last long. Yummm!!

THANKS FROM AND TO MESKWAKI CASINO Norm Beu received the following email from Mr. Bearden on August 14

th and forwarded it to

your newsletter team for inclusion in this newsletter. Norm: It was great to have the group in for the weekend. I hope all went well. If the group

ever needs a place to go for a weekend you are more than welcome back. Please thank the

group for choosing us for their outing. Thanks again - Fritz”

The following letter was sent to Mr. Fritz Bearden and Heather Ehrig at the Meskwaki Casino & Hotel to thank them for their help in organizing the August rally at Tama. “Dear Mr. Bearden;

As President of the Iowa Unit of WBCCI (the Airstream Club) I want to sincerely thank you and

your staff for allowing our unit to gather at the casino campground for our August, 2017 rally.

It is my understanding that the spaces at the campground are normally on a “first come - first

serve” basis, which makes your willingness to block out and reserve spaces for our gathering

that much more appreciated. The weather was wonderful, which added to the unit’s enjoy-

ment of the campground, the dining and gaming in the casino and the pow wow activities.

With 25 units in attendance, this is the largest turnout we have had in several years. This can

largely be attributed to the location and the uniqueness of the Pow Wow celebration. I’m sure

that future unit presidents will keep your facility in mind when determining locations for a

rally.

Heather Ehrig was extremely helpful and most gracious in aiding those who phoned in for res-

ervations or had questions. I lost count of the number of positive statements concerning her

help. All in all, the group had a GREAT weekend. Thanks to you and Heather for helping make

it so.”

WELCOME, NEW MEMBERS, WELCOME We are very pleased to announce that we have two new member units in our Iowa Unit. They are Kirk Ste-venson who lives in Marshalltown, IA and Michael Paul and Pam Walker who call Boone, IA home.

Kirk has a 1969 27-foot Airstream trailer and his WBCCI membership number is 31000. He is the manager of the Slumberland Store in Marshalltown. His home ad-dress is 310 Carson Dr., Marshalltown, IA 50158.

Michael and Pam have a 2017 27-foot trailer and a WBCCI membership number of 5543. Their home ad-dress is PO Box 577, Boone, IA 50036.

Congratulations and welcome to both new members. We are glad to have you join our unit and hope you will be able to join us in our unit activities.

NEWS FROM NANCY This is the latest report about Nancy Helle. When asked how the Helle’s were doing, Nancy’s first comment was, “Chuck has been an awesome cook and bottle washer.”

She got home from the hospital Sunday the 19th after a scare with her heart beating rapidly on Saturday night. She was assured that things like that happen after her kind of heart surgery. Adjusting to the regi-men of pills has been a little difficult but on a visit to her family doctor on Wednesday, the 15th, she was told by the doctor and his nurse that she “looks good.” A visit to both her cardiologist and surgeon on Fri-day should let her know when she’ll be able to resume therapy. Of course, she wants to get back to normal really quickly.

Nancy told us she wants to tell everyone, “Thanks for all your cards, notes and texts. Especially for your prayers.”

THE POW WOW RALLY WAS A WOW FROM START TO FINISH With the most ideal weather anyone could have asked for in mid-August, twenty-five Airstreams and one buddy with a fifth-wheel gathered at the Meskwaki Casino Campground west of Tama, IA for the August Rally of the Iowa Unit. Temperatures in the 70's (50's at night) made for very pleasant opportunities for touring, attending the Pow Wow dancing and just sitting around and visit-ing. First VP Mike Donahue and his helpers did a fantastic job in meal preparation, with egg McMuffins for Friday’s breakfast, pan-cakes and bacon for Saturday morning and biscuits and gravy for Sunday breakfast. Throw in tenderloin sandwiches with fries, watermelon, cantaloupe and cookies for Saturday lunch and everyone enjoyed fabulous food throughout the rally.

Friday morning found the group, about 45 strong, touring the Weiting Opera House in Toledo, IA and the Restonic Mattress Factory in Tama. The opera house was built in 1912 and was in use for many decades before being va-cated. The city of Toledo, IA was thoughtful enough to keep the exterior structure and roof in good repair, but the inte-rior aged. Several years ago, several women decided to bring the old place back to glory and, organizing and spear-heading a fund drive, they raised $1.4 million to take care of the opera house “bowl” (the seats, aisles and floor). They

are now trying to raise another $1.3 million to correct the problems in the stage and backstage area, as well as construct an attached building to handle the green room, dressing rooms, etc. They are well on their way with nearly half the needed funding already raised and we all wish them success.

The Restonic Mattress tour took the group through the mattress and box spring manufacturing process, starting with the material receiving area and continuing to the shipping dock. With an average workforce of about 50 employees, they are able to make and

Mike Donahue cooking Eggs McMuffins for Friday breakfast. June Ryan, Linda Rickert and Linda Beu watch.

ship up to 600 units per day in their peak season. They pride themselves on having a finished product in a cus-tomers hands three days after an order, as well as, at the same time, producing units for walk-in sales at the many furniture stores handling their products. It was remark-able to see how quickly mattresses or box springs could

be assembled.

Those rally attendees arriving at the rally site on Thursday or Friday morning spent Friday afternoon at the Mesk-waki Indian Pow Wow Grounds, where local Meskwaki Indians and Sac Indians from Okla-homa danced native dances for about 3 hours. To many, the

beat of the drums and the dancing movements seemed repetitious, but the costumes worn by the dancers were out of this world. It was obvious that present-day Indians make

use of bright colors and glossy

fabrics, as their costumes provided glorious colors in the arena. Those arriving at the rally campground on Friday afternoon or eve-ning had the opportunity to attend the pow wow dancing on Saturday afternoon, so no one missed the reason for the pow wow.

For several of the dances, the announcer encouraged, almost demanded, that mem-bers of the audience join the dancers and, surprisingly, many did. Tom and Donna Koscamp were seen participating on Friday and others may have without your news-

letter team knowing it. In the historical display tent there was a copy of a letter that showed just how much disdain the federal government had for Native Americans. That letter, dated February 24, 1923, banned the Meskwakis from dancing their native dances. The tribe’s response the following year was to stage their largest powwow of the time, with over 3,200 spectators attending. That ended the ban and the Meskwakis are still dancing today. The Meskwaki Historian stated that the current Meskwaki Settlement contains about 8,000 acres and has 1,400 residents. It is not a reserva-tion in that the tribe purchased the land when they returned years ago from being sent to Okla-homa.

Among those arriving at the rally campground on Friday evening were affiliate members Scott Jensen and friend, Jody. Via telephone, they contacted member Kathy Allen, who not only told them how to get to the campground, but also that their spot had a yellow tape across it to save it for them. Jody replied that she hoped it wasn’t a crime scene tape. This gave Kathy the idea to make the spot a crime scene. She and Deb Ford laid down on the concrete pad while Scott Allen outlined the bodies.

Blue tape was then placed on the outlines and, to add a little more reality, Marcia Woolley provided some catsup to appear as blood. The crime scene was a shock to Scott and Jody and provided a good laugh to the rest of the attendees.

Following breakfast on Saturday, the unit business meeting was held with the Nominating Committee (PP Marcia Woolley) presenting the nominees for unit office for 2017- 2018 and the rally fee was announced, along with other business covered in the meeting minutes included in this newsletter. The rest of

the day was set aside as “free time” so attendees could do whatever they desired. For many this was just getting out the chair, finding a shade tree and enjoying relaxed visiting with other members. We had two new members, one prospective couple and one “buddy” couple joining us and they were made welcome. During the afternoon, we even had a young man from Slater, IA come to the campground and inquire about joining the unit. He has a 1957 Airstream that he is re-storing and he was given the names, addresses and phone numbers of unit members who might be able to help him with advice, as well as instructions how to join WBCCI. So, not only did we have a great rally, but we may have gained two or three new members. Hurrah!!

Unfortunately, all good things come to an end and on Sunday morning we had to part company until Sep-tember, when we will gather for our rally at Boone, IA in conjunction with that communities’ Pufferbilly Days Festival. Norm and Linda Beu, Mike and Linda Rickert and Mike Donahue and his helpers are due a great big THANK YOU for one of the best rallies we have had in the past several years. GOOD JOB CREW!!!

Lavonne Sandersfeld has sent us info about a book she enjoyed reading. The book is “Driving Miss Norma”, which was published in May by HarperOne. Lavonne’s comments were “The author’s first owned (an) Airstream, but when they decided to take his mother on a RV trip, they needed something bigger. I think they went back to an Airstream after this trip. I could relate to the RV lifestyle and the many places they visited. I know many in our Unit would enjoy the book. It comes in large print, too!”

The book deals with a 90-year-old widow who said “NO” to cancer treatment and “YES” to hitting the road with her son and his wife and their poodle. Their 13,000-mile journey around the country started in 2015 and ended last September when she passed away. If you are interested in reading the book, check your local library or favorite bookstore. Fox Searchlight Pictures has purchased the movie rights, so it may be on the big screen in the future.

A NIAGARA FALLS TRIP IN SPRING Your newsletter team wants to apologize to Doug and Deb Ford for not including the following article in the last newsletter. With the International Rally and the need to get the July newsletter out as soon as possible afer getting back to Newton, we overlooked the great article and pictures they sent us in early July. Our apologies, Doug and Deb.

“Deb and I went to Niagara Falls on May 10th

, hoping to avoid the crowds and the heat. We were successful on both accounts! In fact, it was cold the night we saw the falls. The wind made it colder.

We had lunch on the American side, took the “Maid of the Mist” boat ride and walked across the Rainbow Bridge to Canada. Our first trip to Niagara Falls! We also took in Fort Niagara, where the river empties into Lake Ontario. The lake was flooding (and) at it’s highest level! The Coast Guard station was surrounded by water. They had just put out a Zodiac-style boat. While at the fort we were lucky enough to join a tour. They were showing newly hired interpreters around. We got a lot of great historical information about the fort and surrounding towns. Even heard how the local Indians helped the Ameri-can townspeople evacuate before the British killed them all! At the fort, they told us that this was a favorite area for people from China to visit. They fly in to New York, then charter busses to take them to the falls and the fort. Several busses a day arrive.

There was a lot of concern about bank erosion from the flooding. One lighthouse might be lost if erosion continued. We went to see the light-house. It is in no danger of flooding, but the erosion could be a problem. The lighthouse was 30 miles from the fort. The park had a very nice campground, with a good view of the lake. It isn’t on the waters edge, but still nice. On the way there, we saw a campground with campers standing in water!

Then we went to Lockport, New York to see the Erie Canal. We took a boat ride that lasted 1 ½ hours. Passed through a set of locks similar to those on the Mississippi River. You can still see the grooves in the rock bed from the drilling or boring of holes to blast the rock out. No electric drills or air hammers back in the good old days! More interesting his-tory there. The area through Lockport was extremely slow going because of the huge amount of rock that needed to be removed.”

Thanks, Doug and Deb for this article. Now, we need other unit members to get us news about their travels. This arti-

cle and the one below are excellent examples of stories other people like to read. Thanks again for your contributions.

THE SAFARI TRIP OF A LIFETIME The Taube’s e-mailed their story and several pictures about their African experience. Here is their story.

“Last January we went on safari to Tanzania, Africa for two weeks. We had read about Dorobo Tours and Safaris in the Wall Street Journal and how they gave you "the real deal" with their custom tours. The company's owners had been Lutheran missionaries in Arusha. People that would come to visit them would say "take us with you on safari;" so after their retirement they decided to make it a business.

It was just Arden, myself and our driver/guide for two weeks. Here are the National Parks we visited: Taranguire, Manyara, Ngorongoro, Ndutu area, Sarangeti, and the Namiri plains. We stayed in lodges and camps. All accommodations were most comfortable. The camp tents even had real beds, hot showers, and flush toilets.

We would go out on safari in the mornings and early evenings. You can almost reach out and touch these animals but don't dare to get out of the safari vehi-cle. They will at-tack. However, Cheetah

Page 7: IOWA UNIT WBCCIiowa.airstreamclub.net/files/2007/04/Iowa-Air... · 8/22/2017  · and Linda Rickert and Mike Donahue are to be thanked for their efforts in organizing a fun rally.

7

they didn't seem to be too bothered at our presence. As a matter of fact, ignored us.

Here are all the animals we saw: elephant, lions, cheetah, leopard, hippo, wart hog, wildebeest, gazelle, hyena, cape buffalo, os-trich, monkeys, baboons, rhino, jackal, zebra, and many varieties of birds.

As you may have heard, it is true you can hear the lions and hyenas at night and they come close. As a result, after dinner we would be escorted back to our lodge or tent by guards. We had strict orders to stay inside at night.

We think the most intense experience came one evening when we were just driving around. Several safari vehicles were gathered around lions that were resting under trees. A male lion started stalking "something" and laid down in a stalk position on the road. We couldn't see what he was stalking. Then a couple more lions got into position. What were they stalking? We couldn't see. Everyone is quiet.

Then cape buffalo come out from some large bushes to cross the road. They knew something was there but couldn't tell what and they kept on crossing in front of this stalking lion laying in the road.

So, half the herd is across and the other half still crossing. Then the leader of the buffalo calls out a big "MOOOO" and they all started coming back to the road when at once the lions attack.

Everyone got excited because we thought we would see a "kill". However, not meant to be. The lions missed and I was glad because I can't stand the sight of blood and can't kill anything. The cape buffalo are dangerous and the lions know it.

Enough of boring you with our trip. Out of all of our travels we say this was the best trip we have ever taken. We would definitely recommend it as a "Bucket List" must do. If we had the money and health we would go every January.

Pam & Arden Taube Newbies with Airstream #5729” Thank you, Pam & Arden. You make us want to go!

WORKERS ENDURE HEAT, WIND TO REPAIR IOWA CAPITOL It’s not the height or the heat shimmering off the Iowa Capitol’s gold- plated dome that

bothers Brian Johnson. It’s the potential knock-you- off- the- scaffolding gusts that took

some getting used to when Johnson began making repairs to the historic dome, nearly 275

feet above ground on a hill overlooking downtown Des Moines. “ You have to be prepared

for the wind,” said Johnson, of Des Moines. “ It can really surprise you.”

Johnson is among about 20 workers scattered on five levels of scaffolding that wrap around

Iowa’s 131- year old Capitol during the most visible part of a $10 million, 20- month project

to restore the massive dome.

The priority is replacing 15,000 bricks that have deteriorated in the interior dome, but be-

cause that task required construction of scaffolding that climbs about 75 feet up from the

main structure, maintenance officials decided it was the perfect time to make other repairs

to a building that takes a beating from snow, wind and heat. Workers are replacing glass in

some windows that circle the structure, repainting window frames, repairing copper window

sills and filling in holes in the sandstone that makes up the building’s face.

Crews also will install a permanent platform in the dome so workers can better monitor future deterioration. Officials hope to remove

the external scaffolding by November, but work will continue inside the dome. It’s a difficult time to spend so much money to repair

the Capitol, given that the state has made budget cuts recently due to lower-than- expected tax revenues, but project manager Scott

Allen, of OPN Architects in Des Moines, said officials had little choice.

Allen noted that shards of the brick that make up the dome were regularly peeling off and falling to the floor. “ The top thickness of

the brick dome is only 4 inches and you can see portions of the face of the brick where 2 inches has spalled off, so obviously that’s

something we need to address,” Allen said.

Despite the extensive work, the Capitol’s appearance won’t change, at least not during daylight. At night, the Capitol is expected to be

more striking after the installation of a new LED lighting system that will highlight the building and its five domes with a more natural-

colored illumination. It will replace a system installed in the 1980s that gives the Capitol in an orange- tinted glow. Oskaloosa- based

Musco Lighting donated lighting, and the overall renovation project includes the costs of installing the new system.
