The gap betweenfault and performance managementFault Management systems offer comprehensive visibility to the health status of network elements. Through these systems, operators receive real-time alerts on every fault as it occurs. On the other hand, Performance Management systems enable managers to prepare the network for the future, as well as determine its efficiency, by analyzing the network’s historic performance data and generating reports.

Unlike fault management, which answers simple binary questions (fault/no fault), performance analysis uses complex KPIs to identify trends and anomalies in the network. These KPIs are very difficult to build, usually requiring the assistance of developers, causing a substantial delay in response to problems. In order to quickly identify problems before they occur there is a need for a solution that goes beyond fault management, providing alerts based on performance indicators and identifying problematic trends as they happen.

IPA StudioIPA Studio is a web-based environment for defining and testing the rules for triggering alarms. The rules are created by using KPIs to define logical conditions for raising alarms. They include a variety of threshold types which compare various KPIs, PIs, as well as patterns within the configuration data. The environment does not require any programming-knowledge and is based on building blocks, which once defined, can be repurposed for building new rules.

Real-time Analysis and NotificationsAfter defining the Data Loader properties and the rules, IPA analyzes in real-time the constant stream of data from the various data sources. Alarms are raised based on the rules, while notifying the relevant stakeholders through SNMP, SMS, email, and its web-based Alarms console.
