SHIFT IN L2 INSTRUCTIONCHANGE IN ASSESSMENT IN L2
Shrum and Glisan (2010) describe a paradigm shift in assessment practices in the world language classroom. In the old paradigm, the purpose of assessment was simply to evaluate language learners and assign grades.
The new paradigm identifies multiple purposes of assessment:
To assess learner progress in proficiency
To assess attainment of the National Standards
To guide and improve student performance
To evaluate and inform instruction and program design
To make a seamless connection between instruction and assessment (p. 396)
Traditional vs Integrated Performance-Based Assessment (IPA)
http://www.ascd.org/publications/books/196021/chapters/What_is_PerformanceBased_Learning_and_Assessment,_and_Why_is_it_Important%C2%A2.aspx
Traditional IPA
IPA evaluates students’ use of language in the three modes of communication. (carla.com)
WHAT IS IPA?
Authentic: uses real-world tasksPerformance-Based: language and
cultural knowledge used in communicative asks
Based on 3 modes of communication: Interpretative, interpersonal, presentational
Integrated: communication used with other standard goal areas
Show developmental proficiency progress: novice, intermediate, advanced…
Blend with classroom instruction & experience
