    SECTION 1

    Projecting & Presenting

One of the most common questions we get from instruc-tors about iPads is, "can I use my iPad in the classroominstead of my laptop?" The answer is yes. If you have aniPad2 or New iPad, it works very much like a laptop, but on the original iPad, the way it works is a bit differ-

ent and takes some getting used to. On the iPad 2 andhigher, the iPad's screen will be mirrored regardless ofwhat apps are in use; however, on older iOS devices, in-cluding the original iPad, only specific apps will be ableto use it. (In what follows, where there are references toapps that project, this indicates that they can be used

    Going Beyond PowerPoint-Style Presentations

If you want to go beyond PowerPoint-style presenta-tions, consider an app like GoodReader(http://goo.gl/ASGYw), Atomic Browser(http://goo.gl/D3HGQ), or iCab Mobile(http://goo.gl/kNIDc). While you cannot edit files inthese, they have the capability of storing files off-line, or-ganizing them, and projecting them. Atomic Browserand iCab are excellent choices if you will mainly be pro-jecting materials from the web. They are considered bymany to be the best web browsers for the iPad. Withsimilar feature sets, it is largely a matter of interfaceand individual aesthetics.

GoodReader started life as a PDF viewer, but it can han-dle a long list of file types, including PDFs, MS Officeand Apple iWorks files (including PowePoint and Key-note, though it can do little more than scroll throughthem), HTML and web archive files from Safari, plaintext, a variety of graphics formats (.jpg, .jpeg, .gif, .tif,.tiff, .bmp, .bmpf, .png, .ico, .cur, .xbm), as well as audioand video) .aac, .adts, .ac3, .aif, .aiff, .aifc, .caf, .mp3,.m4a, .snd, .au, .sd2, wav for audio and .mov, .mp4,.m4v, .3gp, .mpv for video). A basic web browser is alsoincluded, but is far less powerful than any of the dedi-cated web browsers for iPad. It's real power is as a PDFreader, able to handle very large files and providing a va-riety ofhighlighting and annotation tools (which maybe used in a presentation).

If you have other presentation needs, a number of toolsare available. Some of the note-taking tools, such asNote Taker HD (http://goo.gl/41cLI) and Sundry Notes(http://goo.gl/JSnlj) provide this capability. iThoughtsHD (http://goo.gl/RarQ8), a mind-mapping tool, andPopplet (http://goo.gl/tWyU3) which falls somewherein between note taking and mind-mapping, both pro-vide support for video out. Some MU instructors have found the Wolfram Alphaline of Course Assistants (http://goo.gl/hhRpF) andOmnigraph Sketcher useful (http://goo.gl/fBm0J) formathematics teaching and graphing. Another recentapp that shows promise is Explain Everything

(http://goo.gl/W1ims). It allows you to produce MP4movies of presentations created using a wide variety ofdocument types with annotation and narration.

    Other Considerations

In looking at apps for your presentations, there are afew features to consider. One feature found in severaltools is a "laser pointer" mode. This emulates a laserpointer by displaying a bright red dot as you move yourfinger across the touch screen. Also consider how theapp handles file transfer. Common modes includesyncing via a cable with iTunes, email, WebDav (wire-less transfer of files, though it may not call it somethinglike "WiFi-transfer"), syncing to a proprietary website,or connecting to a popular service such as Dropbox andSugar Sync. This may not seem too important at the mo-ment, but, when trying to quickly copy files over when

preparing for class or a presentation, it can be.

You should also consider the editing and display func-tions. Does the app allow you to edit the presentation ordocument. This is particularly important with Power-Point and Keynote files. Not only does it allow you tomake changes at the very last minute (or even to com-pose the file on the iPad), it also makes it easy to correctproblems with layouts, typography, and transitions thatmay occur when moving files from a desktop or laptopto an iPad. When displaying the document, most appsmirror the iPad screen to the projector, but some, suchas Keynote, give you a richer set of controls on the iPad.Look too for unusual functionality, such asGoodReader's highlighting capabilities or iThoughtHD'sability to choose screen resolution.

Finally, be prepared for a little roughness the first fewtimes you do a presentation from an iPad. It is a differ-ent experience from using a laptop, but it can work justas well. One major adjustment is having the screen goblank when moving from one app to another. This canbe disconcerting but is nothing to be concerned about. It will come back on as soon as you open the next app orenable video output from it. (Some apps allow the exter-nal display to be turned on and off.)

    Blackboard & Online Course Apps

    Blackboard

MU currently supports two apps that directly tie in withour Learning Management Systems. Blackboard MobileLearn (http://goo.gl/nKQaC) gives ready access to

many functions in Blackboard. While its instructor func-tions are limited (there is no access to the Grade Centerat this time), it is useful for working with discussionboards, accessing uploaded materials, and the additionof simple items.

    8/30

The majority of Blackboards functions are available onthe iPad through a regular browser, such as Safari, though some additional apps are needed for uploads.(In what follows, it is assumed that the iPad is on ver-sion 5.0 or higher; most the Grade Center functions areunavailable in older versions.) Specific features that dono work include chat, virtual chat room, Collaborate,Wimba Voice Tools, and regular upload functions. It ispossible for instructors to upload through WebDAV, asdescribed in a later section.) Some functions require spe-cial settings or are only partially available.

    Text Editor

The Visual Text Editor works to some extent on the lat-est versions of iOS. Basic formatting and list functionswork, but the cursor has a tendency to skip around thescreen, making it virtually impossible to type in land-scape orientation.

It is generally better to turn off the Visual Editor andrely on the plain text editor. While this results in someloss of functionality, it is probably sufficient for the ma-jority of tasks in Blackboard that do not require the em-bedding of files.

    To turn it off globally:

    1. Go to the My Blackboard Tab.2. select Personal Information from the Tools menu.3. Then select Change Personal Settings.4. Turn the editor off.5. Click submit.

You may copy and paste text from other apps and createlinks.

    7

Change Set Availability to Off then submit the page.

    Grade Center

The Grade Center was almost completely unusable onthe iPad prior to the release of iOS 5.0. (To check theversion, go to Settings > General > About and look atthe listing for Version Number; it should be 5.0 orhigher.) With the release of iOS 5, nearly all functions ofthe Grade Center became available so long as ScreenReader Mode is enabled. Heres how:

    1. In Mobile Safari, log into Blackboard and go to the de-sired course.

    2. Go to Control Panel > Grade Center > Full Grade Cen-ter.

    3. Above the Grade Center menu, look for the text ex-plaining Screen Reader mode. Those works will be alink. Click that.

(A brief video from Vincennes University illustrates howto check iOS versions and set Screen Reader Modehttp://youtu.be/nzJFVdwAgOI.)

This does not enable scroll bars, rather it allows you to

drag rows up and down or columns left or right withyour finger. It may be a little slow with large grade ros-ters. Note that Screen Reader mode also makes the pop-up menus in the Grade Center sticky - that is to say, they remain open until you click the x in the upper-right corner. If this feature is not enabled, the menusare still accessible, but a light touch is required to open

and use them. The other aspect of Screen Reader mode, which should be noted, is that you may not directly en-ter scores spreadsheet style. It is necessary to selectView Grade Details for a cell in order to enter orchange a grade. If you need to enter a lot of grades atonce in spreadsheet mode, it is recommended that youdo the following:

1.In the Grade Center menu, tap Manage and then se-lect Organize Grade Center.

2.Locate the grade item(s) for which you wish to enterscores.

3.Click the up-and-down arrows at the upper right ofthe section of Organize Grade Center with the desired

column(s).4.Tap a column to open the Reorder Column menu.5.Use the up arrow to move it up to the beginning of the

list. Then click Apply. (In this procedure, you willwant it as close to the beginning of the Grade Centeras possible.)

6.You may also wish to hide some of the columns suchas Availability that take up room in the Grade Center).

    7.Click Submit.

8.Click the link to Interactive Mode in the text above theGrade Center Menu.

9.Click the Edit Rows Displayed button at the bottomright and set the value to 50 (the highest number al-lowed).

    10.Click Go.

This will allows you to enter scores for up to 50 studentin spreadsheet mode as you normally would. By chang-ing the sort order, you can accommodate an additional50 in this way. If you need to do more than this num-ber, consider setting up smart views.

If you wish to download the Grade Center to a spread-sheet on your iPad, the download location needs to beset to Content Collection, as Safari cannot directly down-load from the Grade Center without an error. Once ithas been saved to a content collection, you can down-load it to your iPad from the File Manager (CourseTools > Files) or through a WebDAV connection.

Uploading grades from a spreadsheet into Grade Centeron an iPad requires some additional steps. This is be-cause of the general lack of CSV- and text-export fea-tures in current iPad spreadsheet apps. As with theGrade Center download, it is necessary to upload thefiles to the File Manager in Blackboard first. This maybe done through a WebDAV connection as described inthe WebDAV section. (Please note that Pages will notwork for this, as it cannot export a plain text file.) The

trick is that after completing the edits in your spread-sheet program (e.g., Numbers, QuickOffice), it is neces-sary to copy and paste the data into a text document.

    1. This may be done in Print n Share by clicking the AddDocument Icon (plus-sign) icon in Print n Shares

Documents screen and selecting New Text File. Pastethe text in and save.

    2. It may also be done in GoodReader by tapping Man-age Files, then New Text. Paste in the text and save.

Once the text document is created, follow the WebDAVinstructions for the app and upload. The file may thenby opened from Blackboards file manager and in theGrade Center upload window and imported.

WebDAV Transfer from iPad to Blackboard

These instructions have been tested with GoodReader(http://goo.gl/ASGYw), Eurosmartz Print n Share(http://goo.gl/87huu), and Pages(http://goo.gl/Awkqq). It should work with the rest ofthe iWorks apps, most of the Eurosmartz products. Itshould work in a similar manner for other apps that al-low WebDAV uploads. Not all apps that supportWebDAV on the iPad support uploads. (Note that multi-ple file uploads sometime fail, so it is best to do one at atime.)

    Step-by-Step Instructions

    1. Browse to your BlackBoard course in Safari or an-other browser on the iPad

2.Open the Files area.3.Click on "Setup Web Folder" and copy the highlighted

URL for Current Web Address.4.Paste this into a note for later reference if necessary.

    For GoodReader

    1. The first time you use this, click on "Connect to Serv-ers," click Add, and choose "Any WebDAVServer."

2.Fill in the first four fields, pasting the WebDAV ad-dress into the URL field.

    3.Click Add.

    Finishing Up

Once the file(s) have been uploaded, log into Black-board through Safari. You should be able to use the AddFiles and Add Item tools to deploy the content to stu-dents by choosing "Browse Course" rather than "BrowseMy Computer."

It is also possible to download files from Blackboard inthis manner, though it is often easier to do so throughthe regular Blackboard interface in a web browser.

    Tegrity

Tegrity is not accessible in the usual way through Black-board on the iPad. The Tegrity app is designed to giveaccess to Tegrity recordings on the iPad, iPhone, andiPod Touch. As with the web version of Tegrity(http://goo.gl/nxNPD), users can jump to any indexedpoint in the video.

    Other Apps

Wolfram, the makers of Mathematica, are producing anew class of tutorial/ assistant apps that are beginninggo attract interest. So far these include "Course Assis-tants" for Algebra, Calculus, and Music Theory. Some of

the functionality of each is also present in the generalWolfram Alpha app (http://goo.gl/xyRvO) as well. There are a fair number of other apps (free and paid) inthe App Store that provide more traditional tutorialsand reference materials, ranging from mathematical for-mulae and special-purpose calculators to dictionaries, flashcards, anatomical atlases, and literature.

Some other resources that you may use in your teachingmay not have apps, but their web sites may have mobileversions with capabilities tied directly to your iPad'sabilities. A good example is the ARTstor database. Themobile version (http://mobile.artstor.org)does not provide all of the features of the Flash-basedsite, but I'd designed to give immediate access to collec-tions and groups of images set up by the instructor, pro-vides good-quality images that may be zoomed up to

four times, and incorporates a flashcard feature.

A few apps that take some of the hassle out of class ad-ministration have also emerged. The most famous isprobably Attendance (http://goo.gl/8tcvo), which canimport rosters, help in taking attendance, export atten-

dance records, and move files around between differentdevices and computers.

Some units, such as the Sinclair School of Nursing, haveidentified an array of medical and nursing apps that areuseful to their students. Your colleagues (both here and

at other institutions) may have already identified a setof apps that they would recommend for student use inyour discipline.

    Researching with iPads

A number of apps support access to academic data-bases, but a great deal can also be done without them. While some databases have specialized apps, the MU Li-braries database resources generally work well with theiPad. These are accessible on campus, off-campus

through the proxy server, and off-campus through aVPN. PDF articles can be opened and annotated in pro-grams such as GoodReader (http://goo.gl/ASGYw) andiAnnotate PDF (http://goo.gl/GaCim). Non-PDF re-sources may also be saved in GoodReader or in brows-ers with off-line capabilities, such as Atomic Browser(http://goo.gl/D3HGQ) or iCab Mobile

    Advanced Classroom Presentations

The iPad can go well beyond simply acting as a devicefor showing PowerPoint-style presentations. While youmay wish to use that type of presentation, you can easilyswipe between applications to:

If you take this approach, it is best to close any appsthat you will not be using. This will allow you to swipequickly through the apps you want without distraction.

The possibilities of demonstrations are very wide. OneMU music professor uses a synthesizer app to demon-strate principals of working with a synthesizer to hiscomposition students.

Remote for Laptop Connected to Classroom Pro-jector

In some cases, you may wish to move around the class-room while projecting from a computer. There are vari-ous ways to use your iPad to control a computer con-

nected to a projector. These range from simple Power-Point remotes to full-blown applications that allow theiPad to act as a remote client for the laptop. In somecases, these also add whiteboard-like functionality, drawing on top of whatever is displayed on the laptopscreen.

    Open-Ended Communication in the Classroom

Use an iPad (iPhones, iPods, and other small deviceswork well for this as well) to receive a feed from Twitteror similar service to drive/enhance questions and discus-sion with students.

Suggested Accessory: a case with a handhold. This willallow you to move about the classroom more easily andnaturally.

    Suggested App: Twitter (http://goo.gl/QtkZy)

    Notes:

Because of FERPA, you cannot require students to par-ticipate in Twitter or any other third-party service ofthis nature, especially with their real names.

If you believe that a service may provide a secure envi-ronment for this type of interaction and does not in-fringe FERPA, so that you may require students to par-ticipate, it will still need to be cleared by DoIT, Regis-tration, and the Business Office in accordance with offi-cial University policy.

Instructors on campus have had great success with thevoluntary use of this type of communication in largeand medium lecture settings.

If you do intend to try this, provide the students withclear and concise instructions and expectations of theirconduct. It is also advisable to pick a relatively blandtopic to introduce this type of activity (e.g., do not try

introducing in a day when the topic is sexual reproduc-tion in an intro biology class).

    Competitive/Collaborative/Guided WebSearches

These are approaches in which one or more students, orgroups of students, are tasked to surf the web for spe-cific kinds of information during class. The basic idea is

to have students locate resources that support the topicof the class session and sharing them with others. Insome cases, a designated student projects what he/shefinds during a lecture. In others groups of students seekto identify web resources in either a competitive man-ner, to see who can find the best resources, or collabora-tively as a team. These latter two approaches work bestin a flipped-classroom environment or a situation

where a class is trying to work through a case or prob-lem together.

Suggested Apps: Only a web browser is required.

Notes: This obviously requires a good degree of plan-ning ahead of time on the part of the instructor andshould include a set of expectations to share with thestudents.

    Reference & Resources

This is probably the most elementary and obvious use ofan iPad for students. In addition to textbooks, studentscan easily carry downloaded journal articles, notes, andother class materials on their iPads. These are useful in

and out of the classroom; nevertheless, a little planningcan help. Using a Mac app like iBook Author, you cancreate content for the class that is available throughiBooks and in PDF form. When adopting a textbook forthe course, it is worth considering whether there is anelectronic form of it available. Although several surveysover the past few years indicate that students do not likeetextbooks, that appears to be changing in the latest sur-

veys. If you have a reading list of articles from MU data-bases or other sources, creating a list of them with di-rect links to persistent URLs is a good way of distribut-ing them.

It may also be helpful to give students a list of suggestedapps for these types of content. This would be particu-larly useful in instances where the content is specialized(e.g., sheet music). Beyond traditional content, this is

where tutorial apps like Khan Academy(http://goo.gl/0veKy) and the various Wolfram CourseAssistants (http://goo.gl/hhRpF) could become impor-tant. For some disciplines, there are large numbers ofspecialized reference apps and calculators (e.g., ICD9Consult 2012 Free [http://goo.gl/MyPX0] or Radiology2.0: One Night in the ED [http://goo.gl/4S3xf]).

It addition to the ease of annotation and the decrease inthe weight students need to carry, this makes it mucheasier to distribute updated content.

    Suggested Apps: iBooks (http://goo.gl/D2MnQ), Kindle

    App (http://goo.gl/zlhBl), Nook App(http://goo.gl/qALNC), CourseSmart(http://goo.gl/cSahd), Inkling (http://goo.gl/YvYu2),GoodReader (http://goo.gl/ASGYw), iAnnotate PDF(http://goo.gl/GaCim).

Apps to Support Fieldwork and Labwork

There are multitude of general and specialized apps thataid students doing field work in many disciplines. Thesemay take the form of photography/video capture and ed-iting tools, geotagging and mapping apps, apps for enter-

ing data into databases, and much more. The field is sowide that it is advisable to consult colleagues or profes-sional list serves for suggestions.

    SECTION 5

    Tips

    General

    1. If you are planning on projecting or using your iPadto remote into a computer in class, be sure you have a

good charge on it. These activities appear to drain thebattery faster.

2.Before projecting from you iPad, close all apps you donot want open. This will make for smoother transi-tions when swiping between apps and may also avoid

    Tips

    24

awkward moments (e.g., having a draft email sud-denly appear in the middle of a class session).

3.When projecting in class, you may wish to set theAuto-Lock (Settings > General > Auto-Lock) to 15Minutes or Never and set the timing of the Passcode

Lock to a high value as well.

4.Set the rotation lock when projecting.

5.If you find that your video adapter slips out of youriPad too easily in class, a long rubber band loopedaround the adapter and some part of your case mayhelp. (Note:, be sure the rubber band is loops upagainst the wide part of the adapter, not the cord, toprevent damage to the cord.)

6.If you plan to use your iPad in class while movingaround (see Use Cases), consider purchase of a casewith some form of handhold. These range from elasticbands to cloth (or leather) loops, to plastic handles.Be careful if you are holding an iPad partly by thesmart cover, as this can come loose.

    7. If you have a set of apps that you use habitually forclass, consider placing them in the Dock or in a folderfor quick access.

    Security, Privacy, and Accounts

    1. DoITs Information Security Access Managementteam does not recommend using cloud services.

2.Set up VPN connections for off-campus use. This will

protect passwords and other sensitive information, particularly when using public connections. This isalso useful when working with MU Library databases.Instructions for setting up the TigerNet VPN for iPadmay be found at http://goo.gl/fvA56 (MU Login re-quired).

3.Set a passcode for your iPad. For better security, donot use the simple passcode (4 digits) and set a longerpassword. If you are carrying any sensitive data onyour iPad, consider also enabling the Erase Data fea-ture. This will erase all data on the iPad after ten, con-secutive failed login attempts. These settings arefound under Settings > General > Passcode Lock

4.If you are using iCloud, pay close attention to whatapps and data you are allowing to sync with iCloud,

particularly as regards information from grant-funded projects, FERPA, and HIPAA data.

5.Pay attention to what apps you have enabled in loca-tion sharing. You may be sharing information aboutwhere you are that you do not intend. Check this inSettings > Location Services.

6.Enable Find My iPad (in Settings > iCloud) to make iteasier to locate lost or stolen iPads.

    7. If you are not using Bluetooth devices with your iPad,turn off Bluetooth (Settings > General Bluetooth).

This will prevent hacking attempts via open Bluetoothconnections (Bluejacking, Bluesnarfing, and Bluebug-ging.) It will also extend battery life.

8.If your have departmental or resource accounts foremail or calendars in Exchange, you can set up multi-ple Exchange email/calendar accounts on your iPad.

9.Check with your department to see if there are spe-cific apps they own or recommend. Some depart-ments do have AppStore accounts.

10.Remember that your MU Accounts are more vulner-able if you do not set a passcode on your iPad.

11.If your department has a FileMaker Pro server, youmay be able to access it with FileMaker Go on your

iPad with a Mizzou VPN enabled.
