INNOVATIVE INVESTOR EDUCATION

The Institute for Private Investors, IPI, is the pre-eminent membership network for ultra-affluent private investors and families. The IPI delivers its members with ‘best in class’ investment strategy and wealth management education which supports critical decision making.

The Institute for Private Investors provides innovative educational and networking resources to families with substantial assets and their advisors, and in doing so changes the way investors work with advisors and advisors work with investors, for the benefit of both. Through its affiliation with its parent Campden Wealth, IPI is the bridge from the US to the global private investor community.

Families of substantial wealth rely on IPI to provide a safe harbour where they can learn from each other and leading experts while fostering lifelong relationships with like minded peers.

Established 23 years ago, IPI members learn from distinguished experts and peers through a mix of in-person and online resources, including four two-day forums, roundtables, a robust secure private chat room, a co-investment collaborative and a full library of archived presentations, white papers and investor conversations.

“ How do I become the CEO of my wealth?”

“In addition to gratitude, one of the strongest contributors leading to happiness, is a sense of belonging to a community. I have to say that you have created an extraordinary community within IPI and I benefit from it by a large multiple of what I bring to it. Thanks for all you do.”

—Private Investor Member since 2008

A PRIVATE MEMBERSHIP GROUP YOU CAN TRUST

Individuals and families with substantial assets count on IPI’s programs to ensure a safe harbor for a confidential exchange of information.

IPI members represent a wide spectrum of investment views and levels of investment knowledge, yet all share a commitment to improving their understanding of the complexities of the financial landscape and helping each other become more sophisticated stewards of their wealth.

Because IPI does not endorse any investment services, strategies or managers, content is educational, not promotional. Membership dues and educational fees are IPI’s sole source of revenue.

“Discretion and anonymity are two of the key reasons why I enjoy my membership in IPI. The objectivity of the IPI community is a pre-requisite for quality content.”

A NEXT GENERATION FOCUS

One of the greatest concerns for ultra high-net-worth families is preparing future generations for their responsibilities as stewards of family wealth. With that important goal in mind, IPI offers stand-alone NextGen programs that include special events designed to help next-generation principals between the ages of 20 and 40 connect with and learn from their peers, online and in person, in a conflict-free, secure, fun and relaxed environment.

IPI’s Next Generation programs allow these principals to learn both from IPI educational programs throughout the year as well as from one another. Members represent different levels of involvement in the family financial and investment descisions – from no formal involvement to a leadership role in the family office. These gatherings are for younger wealth creators and the adult children of ultra-affluent families who are seeking to increase their knowledge of investing and family wealth preservation to prepare them for assuming the responsibility of wealth.

“My parents have given me great autonomy to run their affairs— they felt that after I joined IPI, I was on track to make much better decisions.”

—Private Investor Member since 2002

“ How do you effectively integrate the next generation into succession planning conversations?”

A VARIETY OF IN-PERSON AND ONLINE LEARNING ENVIRONMENTSIPI members participate in a variety of events held throughout the year in the U.S. and around the globe. Driven by member interests, topics encompass all facets of wealth management and sustaining family wealth — including investment strategies, wealth research, asset allocation, advisor relationships, benchmarking performance, the next generation, family legacy, governance systems and philanthropy. All IPI members agree to a code of conduct when they join and respect the non-commercial tradition of IPI events.

Forums—Four two-day IPI forums are held each year, in New York and San Francisco, where leading industry experts share insights into strategies and issues pertinent to growing and preserving private wealth. Distinguished keynote speakers and intimate member-only breakout sessions address a wide range of wealth management issues. Private investors interact with their peers and address complex issues together, creating a distinct feeling of community.

Investor Briefings—Private investor briefings are designed to bring an intimate group of like-minded financial families and family businesses together to discuss a set topic.

“I am writing to let you know how much I enjoyed the Forum. It provided a well-balanced mix of technical, practical, and family dynamic information…. I am discovering IPI to be a safe venue in which to discuss the issues and benefits surrounding wealth. I realize that the greatest benefits come from a group of people who are willing to share their experiences.”

Private Meetings—Twelve two-day Campden conferences are held throughout the world and regionally in Chicago, Boston and Miami. They cover three areas: Families in Business, Family Offices and Family Wealth. These intimate, closed-door events feature family members and family office executives sharing their experiences and expertise through case study presentations, interactive workshops and panel discussions.

Next Generation Programs—A series of stand-alone events, breakfast sessions, research and networking opportunities for members 20-40 years old. This unique program is designed to help younger members on their journey to becoming wealth stewards, entrepreneurs and future wealth creators.

Memberlink®—A secure online discussion area for private investors and a rich archive of handouts and recordings from presentations. Interactive investor conversations enable members to stay connected between the in-person meetings. They are ideal for discussing portfolio theory and approaches, gaining feedback on a specific manager or wealth professional or sharing ideas. Included in the archives are on average 60 white papers typically posted by professional members each quarter.

The Grill®—Due diligence in action, these sessions provide a window into how experienced private investors question a money manager/advisor. This format teaches investors to ask the right probing questions to evaluate financial services providers.

Webinars—These online sessions provide a convenient way for members to learn about topical issues remotely.

“It hasn’t taken me long to realize that IPI will be of great value to me and the family I represent. I say this because of the unbelievable and resourceful website, the information obtained at the Forums and the people that I get exposed to through the membership.”

—Private Investor Member since 2010

INVESTMENTS

Passive vs. Active InvestingIn theory I believe in indexing, but when I see the performance of certain managers, I waiver. Does anyone else have trouble sticking with the indexing approach even though they agree with it in theory?

Hedge Fund Manager Search Question Do you use any hedge fund manager databases to source investments? I have not done so in the past and am trying to compare different options to see which one is the most useful. So far, we are using Bloomberg’s database, but I’m curious as to whether there are better options that anyone here is familiar with using. Thanks.

FAMILY OFFICE

Cost of Outsourced CIO We are evaluating the use of an outsourced CIO. The CIO is an individual, as opposed to a firm, and local. The CIO would determine asset allocation, identify and manage public-security managers, and manage direct private equity investments.

Choosing and Implementing a CRM in a Single Family Office Has anyone implemented a CRM in their office particularly for the purposes of documenting, standardizing and tracking standard workflows and procedures you want your employees to follow in your various activities, like internal controls, preparing statements, tax and fiduciary compliance etc.? I understand from my friends at Fidelity Family Office that Salentica is a popular choice in the SFO space, but I am interested in any other implementations.

GOVERNANCE

Investment Policy Statement Our family works with an outside investment firm and I am in the process of revising our investment policy statement with input from the family and our adviser. The family prefers to keep things simple and easy to understand. I’m interested in IPS content or structure that goes beyond the basics and has benefited other families.

Family Mission Statement Creation Does anyone have a good process for mission statement creation? We are asking questions and discussing core values, but how do you / did you edit down those statements without minimizing the contributions of some family members.

PHILANTHROPY

Private Foundation Would anyone have any resources pertaining to development of a policies and procedures manual

for a private foundation?

EDUCATION COLLABORATIONS

Pioneering wealth management curriculaPrivate wealth management requires a deeper knowledge of investments, strategies and markets. IPI has created intellectually challenging, five-day wealth management programs in collaboration with The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

The objective of the programs is to help attendees confidently oversee the construction of their portfolios, select advisors, evaluate managers and consider asset protection and estate planning structures.

} Five-day programs teach investors to confidently build portfolios and structures to steward and grow their wealth

} An interactive case study approach enables all levels of investors to apply what they are learning

} Over 865 private investors from 41 countries have completed the IPI/ Wharton Private Wealth Management Program in the last 15 years

“I need to tell you how profound this past week was....I just know there is much that happened on such a deep level that it will persist for many years. In fact, I think many lives will end up being affected, in very positive ways.” —Private Investor and Wharton PWM Graduate

“ What fees should I expect when hiring an advisor? A money manager?”

Private Wealth Management Professional Track

} Philadelphia, PA – October

Financial advisors of ultra high-net-worth clients are facing growing challenges, from clients with an eye on the short-term to a volatile market, and from increased competition to new securities regulations. Private Wealth Management (PWM) Professional Track, designed through a partnership between Wharton and the Institute for Private Investors (IPI), is a four-day program designed to help advisors and family office professionals retain current clients and grow their business. It focuses on the asset classes their clients are most interested in, including hedge funds, real estate, and private equity, and provides unique insights into the financial services market that caters to this group. Led by faculty who have taught over 800 investors in the IPI/Wharton Private Wealth Management Program, this professional track program offers the latest investment advice plus an in-depth view of ultra-affluent families, how they choose an advisor, what they are looking for, and the challenges they face in terms of family governance and succession issues.
