The Bullsheet
Gentleman,
It is that time of year again when the air turns chilly, and our blood runs cold thinking about what needs to be
done in preparation for the holidays. Oh we all know and love the time of year when we get to sit back and
relax with friends and family, but lets also be honest about the fact that it is stressful getting to that point and
also takes some of the fun out of it. I know we dont need to decorate and make cookies and buy gifts and all
the rest of that business, but we also dont need to do a lot of the things we do but we do them anyways. Its
tradition. It is what we remember the holidays as being. Cookies, decorations, family and gifts. Oh yes, and
those glorious little wrapped bundles under the Christmas Tree of anything you can imagine. Sometimes not as
great as what you imagined sometimes even greater.
Now since you are reading this you are obviously a model geek like myself. Model kits are what we think about,
talk about, plan trips around and generally obsess about on a regular basis. Not that we dont have other
interests and hobbies, but model building takes up a lot of grey matter. So of course when you came downstairs
Christmas morning you wanted to see the tree crushed against the ceiling with all the gifts underneath. All of
them if it was up to you would be model kits. Now of course that never was the case, but a gift of plastic under
the tree was always a great gift. To be honest it still is a great gift and one that I always am hoping for. Kind of
ironic that if you wrapped all my model kits up that I have in my stash and put them under the tree it would
block the tree out. I would then spend the whole day unwrapping and looking at each one. That is obsessive
behavior.
Now without dwelling too much on our model addiction I thought about all the kits I received when I was young
for Christmas. A Tiger, Panther, Leopard, Stuka Dive Bomber, B-17 Flying Fortress, B-24 Liberator, P-40E
Tigershark, US Enterprise ( The space ship, not the boat). Corsair, Thunderbolt, Mustang, Sherman, Machinegun
Crew, US Infantryman, USS Missouri, Bearcat, Connoisseur Classic Rolls Royce. Those are just a few of the ones
I vividly remember getting. I would look at each sprue and match up the parts to the steps to see how I wanted
to build the kit. Anticipation. This is what I was sitting here thinking about when I realized that Christmas is
when you often got a model kit, but there really were not a lot of kits that pertain to Christmas. So with that in
mind, I cranked up the internet and decided to see what Christmas related kits were actually out there. Some
strange ones, some naughty ones, and some fairly traditional ones. Time to sit back, relax and take a walk
through the wonderful world of Christmas related model kits.
I would also like to thank all the club members who have helped to make this club one of the most talented and
well represented clubs in IPMS. Have a safe and happy Christmas for you and your family and may we all have
many more holidays to celebrate with each other.

HERE’S A QUESTION you could ask a fellow model maker: “Has there ever been a
model kit made of Santa Claus?
Mat Irvine: Well, the answer to that innocent question is, “Yes, just one, with a couple
of qualifications.”
The Japanese company KSN Midori made a motorized kit (header pic and below) of
Santa and his sleigh, probably issued as early as 1963. It is an extremely rare kit, and
even model expert and good friend of SMN, Andy Yanchus, admits he has seen only one
image of the box-art, and he can’t recall where that came from.

I asked French expert JC Carbonel
for his opinion, and he found more
images of the Midori kit, including
those shown below. But there is not
much solid information. It seems
that while the kit definitely
existed, none of us have ever seen
one 'in the plastic.'

Santa Clause Conquers the Martians , Micro Model Kit.
Here's something nobody will have, your very own Santa Claus Conquers The Martians
diorama. Each kit is 2.5 to 3 inches tall and comes in nicely cast resin parts. Model painting
and assembly is required.
Santa Claus Conquers the Martians is a 1964 science fiction film that regularly appears on lists
of the worst films ever made. It is regularly featured in the "bottom 100" list on the Internet
Movie Database, and was also featured in an episode of the 1986 syndicated series, the
Canned Film Festival. It was directed by Nicholas Webster, and it stars John Call as Santa
Claus. It also includes an 8-year-old Pia Zadora playing the role of one of the Martian children.
The film took on newfound fame in the '90s after being featured on an episode of the comedy
series Mystery Science Theater 3000. It became a holiday staple on the Comedy Central cable
channel in the years following its 1991 premiere, helping it become one of the series' most
popular episodes. It has since found new life again in the 2000s having been riffed by
Cinematic Titanic, which includes five former cast members from MST3K, as of November
2008.

Well, there you have it folks. The best the internet has to offer in the way of holiday and Santa related modeling kits. Mostly figures and some pretty slim pickins at that, but with a little ingenuity and some creativity you can always come up with a holiday themed model kit.

If you have not had the pleasure of joining Bob and several of the regulars for Build Day at Nankin then you owe it to yourself to give it a try. What you ask is build day? Well build day is when you do what you love to do by yourself but you do it with others.( Wow that sounded super creepy when typed out. Maybe that should be edited out. Na, leave it in who cares. Are we still typing? They cant hear us can they? Naw were good, its written out it dosent make noise. Keep going.) Anyways, build day is one Saturday a month when anyone who can make it goes to Nankin and sits around and builds what they are working on. A lot of idea sharing and BS go into the afternoon. Looking at what others are working on and getting ideas from the projects that people have out. Great time and just another way to spend time doing what we love with the people we love to be with. Glad that Bob came up with the idea and again has made it flourish just like he did with the kids club. Come check out the next build day and I promise you it will be a good time.

Members,
We have chosen a design for our medals and they will be ordered shortly so that we have them on
hand. There will not be a preview because we would like to try and keep it a secret so that we have
a wow factor on show day. If someone is dying to see the award then let me know and you may
take a look at it. I think these will be unique and something that people will talk about when it is
presented. We were able to get a good deal on the awards and we should have them in the not too
distant future.
The Show Date Will Be:
October 1, 2016 at the Elks Lodge at 31117 Plymouth Road in Livonia.
Volunteers Needed For the Following Positions:
1. Registration.
2. Raffle.
3. General Help in guiding vendors or participants to room locations as well as set up.
4. Judging
Again I would like people to start thinking of something they may like to volunteer for and this will
not be an all day drain on your time or patience. I want this show to be a positive experience and I
am sure if we all work together it will be.
Sponsorship Packages.
1. Currently our sponsorship package is going to be $25 which will cover a Gold, Silver, Bronze for
each category. We are anticipating 60 categories with splits. This may change, but we will see as
the planning evolves.
2. We are looking to have all categories sponsored so that we do not pay from our club pocket. We
are also looking for any donations that people are willing to make on behalf of the show. If they do
not want to sponsor a category but are willing to donate, a few bucks then we will gladly accept and
put it towards our costs.
3. We will accept kit donations for the raffle as well.
4.All checks need to have John Kesner name on them so they can be deposited. They can
also have IPMS Livonia, but Johns name must be on it also.

1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon granulated sugar
2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil

1 tablespoon lemon juice
3/4 cup part-skim ricotta cheese

Preparation
1. Slice baguette into 8 thin slices; arrange on a baking sheet coated with cooking spray. Toast bread under broiler 3 minutes or until golden brown, turning slices halfway through. Remove from oven. 2. Reduce oven temperature to 450°. Toss cherry tomatoes with olive oil, 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt, pepper, and sugar; bake at 450° on a jelly-roll pan 20 minutes. Using a rubber spatula, fold basil, thyme leaves, oregano, lemon rind, and lemon juice into ricotta cheese. Spread 1 1/2 tablespoons ricotta mixture over each toast; top with roasted tomatoes.
