IPICS BOL:01 – Chemical Ecology in Bolivia

Support started in 2018.

ObjectivesThe overall objective of this project is to develop Chemical Ecology in Bolivia by addressing locally relevant problems with basic and applied approaches, and training undergraduate and graduate researchers with a multidisciplinary perspective which uses Analytical Chemistry as one of its main tools. Systems will be chosen for which there is regional and national needs of new knowledge: chemicals from local plants to control Chagas disease vectors, chemistry of local crop plants in relation to their pollinators, and chemical responses of plants to bioacoustical signaling of interacting animals such as pollinators and herbivores. These research lines may lead to ways to control Chagas disease and to the design alternative ways for the management of agroecosystems, respectively. Additionally, they will involve the training of undergraduate and postgraduate students including local USFX staff, thus opening the possibility of a multiplicative effect.

ISP research support started in 2010, and was concluded in 2015 when the group became part of the network SEAMaN.

ObjectivesThe number of staff in the Department who holds a PhD degree is not sufficient for the development of the Department and other sciences. Thus, an increasing number of PhD in different fields in pure and applied mathematics supported by the international institutions is, indeed, in great needs for the Department. The Department also wants to contribute the research activities of higher education in Mathematics in Cambodia up to a regional and international level.

IPICS ETH:02 - Bioactive Metabolites for Improving Life (BaSIL)

The support started in 2013. The group leader is an alumnus from Sida’s bilateral program with Addis Ababa University, and she has graduated from Uppsala University in 2012.

ObjectivesOne of the objectives of BaSIL, is to conduct a wide, long-span research on plants that are used in the Ethiopian traditional medicine. The strategies to undertake this activity include, collection of ethnobotanical data (by travelling to societies with limited access to conventional medicine so they have to rely almost entirely on traditional medicine for their primary health care and also by closely working with traditional healers), collection of plants with high ‘hit factor’, phytochemical analysis and biological studies on those plants.

The other research activity of BaSIL focuses on isolation and characterization of bioactive peptides, with particular interest in their cytotoxic and anti-protozoal activities. The strategies include plant collection and laboratory experiments. The field collection of plant specimens shall cover a wide area within the country over a range of time. Most laboratory experiments are to be carried out in our lab; experiments that exceed the material capacity of our lab may be carried out at our collaborators' laboratories.

IPPS KEN:03 – Photovoltaic group

This is a research group supported by ISP since 1998.

ObjectivesThe utilization of solar energy as a renewable, environmental-friendly and low-cost source of energy has been hampered by the cost-effectiveness of the technology. Solar energy for heating and PV applications are currently in use all over world. However, even though the production cost of solar cells and related accessories has dropped significantly over the years, the wide adoption solar cell technologies have remained elusive. The overall goal and objective of this research group is in the preparation and characterization of thin solid films for application in the harnessing of solar energy through photovoltaic means or otherwise. The strategy to achieve this is envisaged through optical modelling of thin films, the preparation and characterization of thin solid films, characterization is done via conductivity and Hall effect studies on thin film samples, testing for photocatalytic activity in thin films.

IPICS LAO:01 – Risk Assessment on Foods Contamination and Environment in Lao PDR

The ISP support started in 2005, to the common research group IPICS LAO:01, but has from 2006 been separate to the groups LAO:02 and LAO:03. From 2012 the groups were again combined under the code IPICS LAO:01.

The research group was since April 2008 led by Ms Vanseng Chounlamany, following unfortunate illness of the original group leader. From December 2009, the group is led by another female staff member, Dr Kesiny Phomkeona, after her return from PhD education in Japan (outside of ISP support).

ObjectivesSince chemical contaminants in foods and environment have become promising problems in Laos. Our goals therefore aim to enhance our research capacity on chemical contaminants analysis in foods and environmental samples in Laos. Local scientists are expected to be developed in order to maintain a sustainable testing system. The plans will be carried out by holding some short-term seminars or trainings by well-trained group members. In addition, the project provides opportunities to undergraduate students to get involved in the research works in order to support their final projects for graduation. The project, moreover, aims to disseminate our research achievement and provide some research consult or testing services to other sections outside university.

IPPS LAO:01 – Development of the Geophysics Unit.

This is a research group supported by ISP since 2005.

ObjectivesThe research activities of this group include two different projects:One of such projects is to study the groundwater, using geophysical methods in three selected pilot districts such as Atsaphangthong, Phalanxai and Phin of Savannakhet Province, Laos. The main aims are:1) to assess the groundwater conditions in the studied area (to determine depth to groundwater aquifers and delineate fresh and saline groundwater considering the salt affected groundwater); 2) to construct wells for confirming the geophysical results and for future water supply for the target communities; 3) then to provide a mapping of potential groundwater for future researchers who are interested in this field in the study sites.

The second research activity is focussed on rock magnetism and palaeomagnetism of the central and northern parts of the Indochina Blocks during Permian-Triassic time from the Permian-Triassic volcanic rocks (PTRV) in Laos and NE Thailand, and Permian-Triassic rocks in northeastern Laos, Triassic rocks in central and southern Laos.

ObjectivesThe aim of the project is to generate scientific results on dynamics of the ionosphere within the low-latitude regions of the African sector. The activities are also expected to generate scientific results on the stellar parameters using asteroseismologocal techniques; however, the research horizon will not be limited to asteroseismology.

To get the expertise in Science and Technology needed for economic development, young students should be motivated and attracted to the science subjects. This can be achieved through the introduction of subjects that motivate and attract young people into mathematics and science. At this point, it is important to recognize the power of Astrophysics and Space Science in attracting students into science subjects. The starting point for this to be realised is by training the required human resource for both teaching and training students in research.

IPICS ZAM:01 - Preparation, characterisation and property optimization of conducting polymer systems for chemical sensor applications

ObjectivesThe primary goal of this activity is to develop chemical sensor devices for the detection of organic pollutants and biomedical diagnostics application. The focus is the development of low cost sensors using functional materials based on conducting polymers. The work explores and exploits the inherent properties of conducting polymers. Furthermore, we explore utilization of nanoscience, combining unique properties of nanomaterials and those of conducting polymer systems. Our research seeks to establish structure-property relationships that enable preparation of materials with tailored properties. The resulting materials are evaluated for their sensing characteristics. The ultimate goal is to develop functional low-cost chemical sensor devices that can enable detection of pollutants more easily, at low cost and in shorter timeframes.

IPICS ZIM:01 – Biomolecular Interaction Analyses

The support started in 1990 in the field of Drug Metabolism. In 2005 the original group leader took another position, and a new group leader was appointed. From 2006 the work continued under new leadership and shifted focus to a related scientific field. Dr. Mukanganyama was offered a pilot grant in 2006 (2006-2008) and a first three-year grant in 2008 (2008-2010), and support has then continued

ObjectivesThere exists an untapped potential of plant-based traditional medicine which could significantly contribute to a sustainable management of infectious diseases especially the associated with HIV/AIDS infection. The overall objective of our research project is to identify and characterise safe and effective natural plant products extracts and compounds from Zimbabwean medicinal plants for the sustainable and affordable management of infectious diseases caused by fungal, bacterial infections or malignant tumours. This type of research is of relevance to the Zimbabwean scene where most people use herbal and medicinal plants but there are not documented cases of efficacy or toxicity. The research direction we are taking is aimed at addressing some of these issues and in the process generate new knowledge on plant species of Zimbabwe as well as train competent academic members in the field of phytochemistry and phytomedicine. Our research strategy is aimed at studies to validate, improve and optimize use of indigenous medicinal plants so as to improve the wellness of the Zimbabwean society. It is important to carry out these studies as seasonal availability and geographical spatial availability differences might result in variable efficacy. Active chemical constituents will be identified and bioassays based on whole cell systems will be performed to determine the effects in vitro.

IPICS ZIM:02 Biochemical Ecotoxicology

The support started in 1999.

ObjectivesAgriculture, industrial and mining sectors remain the major controllers of gross profits realized in most developing countries, Zimbabwe included. Technological advancements in these sectors have also resulted in an increase in types of chemicals that support the different technologies which have been adopted to facilitate the different activities carried out by man for sustenance. The various chemicals used by man for his daily activities release chemicals of varying toxicity in the environment that affect terrestrial and aquatic. The aims of the project were to identify and quantify various toxins discharged by different anthropogenic activities in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems using chemical and biochemical approaches.

IPPS ZIM:01 – NUST Applied Geophysics Research Group

ISP support to this group started in 1993, and the final year of ISP direct support was 2005, whereas the group still benefited from belonging to the network ESARSWG. Support to the group was reinstated in 2013 to facilitate its participation in and contribution to ESAESWG.

ObjectiveThe envisaged work constituted an integrated, sequential, applied study of the subsurface, where the relationships between groundwater and surface water within varying geological sites were sought. Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, geological mapping were carried out to establish an initial model of the subsurface. Geophysical surveys were used to update the initial subsurface model. Seasonal monitoring of the background radiation, water table level, chemical and biological quality of the water were carried out. Background radiation levels were used to establish potential radioactive contamination. Biological and chemical water quality will further be assessed and compared with earlier results to establish possible contaminant migration patterns. Water table level variations and possible contaminant migration patterns will form input data to produce a two-dimensional solute transport model of the vadose zone and a numerical groundwater flow model.

The group is part of ESARSWG

This is a network between research groups at the departments of mathematics at Université de Ouagadougou (UO; Burkina Faso), Université de Gaston Berger (UGB; Saint Louis, Senegal), Université de Cocody-Abidjan, Université des sciences, des techniques et des technologies de Bamako (USTTB) and Université de Nouakchott (UN; Mauritania). The network was founded in 1999, and has been supported by ISP since 2003.

Support started in 2003.

ObjectiveWe may organize PhD sandwich program south-south and south-north, schools and annual meetings (workshops). Each year we may organize workshops, regional meetings, conferences and doctoral school of researchers within the region.

The intention is to train more students in PhD program in Saint Louis (Senegal), in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), in Cocody- Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire), in Nouakchott (Mauretania) and Bamako (Mali). For that purpose, we need to support postgraduate students, and involve them in research training program in activities of the network, throughout the region. The aim is to build research capacity in our universities in applied mathematics. The aim is also to arrange short visits of scientist’s part of the network or outside it, in the laboratories members of the network and abroad. The visiting scientists will have to give doctoral course, seminar and to contribute in training of researchers.

IPMS EAUMP – East African Universities Mathematics Programmehttp://www.isp.uu.se/what-we-do/mathematics/networks/eaump/

This is activity is a network between the mathematics departments at University of Nairobi (UoN; Kenya), University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM; Tanzania), Makerere University (Mak; Uganda), University of Rwanda (UR; Rwanda) and University of Zambia (UNZA; Zambia). The three first departments have been supported by ISP through this network since 2002, and the two latter since they joined the network in 2009. The network has one coordinator at each node (the Head of Department, or someone appointed by the Head of Department) and one over-all coordinator (a position which is held at one of the nodes for a period of three years, and then it rotates). The duties of the Internetwork coordinator is to establish regional and interregional contacts and fund raising.

Support started in 2002.

Objective Capacity building through PhD, Postdocs and MSc. Capacity is mainly in Pure

Mathematics and new areas of mathematics. We have identified, through competitive basis, ideal persons to take on the training opportunities that are available under EAUMP

Introduce new areas of mathematics in the region thus calling for graduate programmes/curriculum reviews. Both MSc degrees have been refocused. The MSc in Mathematics is now entirely Pure Mathematics and the MSc in Mathematical Modelling is purely Applied Mathematics. The University had recommended a merger of the two programmes but the Department wishes to run them separately.

Regional schools, workshops and conferences for graduate students and researchers. We have supported staff and students to attend these activities.

Joint research projects and publications. The research done jointly has resulted into joint publications as seen on the publications list.

Improve research facilities in the region. We have acquired equipment that has helped to promote teaching and research in the Department.

Acquisition of graduate text books and journals. We have bought reference text books for graduate students most of them, in new areas of mathematics. We have also taken advantage of online graduate textbooks to cut costs on this goal. However, we have not subscribed to any journals as most articles can be got online.

Build international cooperation and links in various areas of mathematics. Here, we have joint activities that we share with other universities: Uppsala, Malardalen, KTH, Stockholm, Bath, Chalmers, Reading, Linkoping, Lappeenranta, and Tampere. We also have links to Southern Africa countries through SAMSA and other ISP supported networks in South East Asia through inter-network cooperation.

Promote Staff exchange in the region. There is improved mobility of staff especially to give graduate lectures, attend Ph.D/MSc defenses, and carry out external examination activities in the region.

Collaboration with Sida bilateral activities in the region through holding joint events.

IPPS AFSIN - African Spectral Imaging Network (AFSIN)http://www.isp.uu.se/what-we-do/physics/networks/afsin/

ObjectiveThe overall goals of the network, is to contribute, to the benefit of the laboratories in members’ countries, to the development of international standard research activities in the fields of applied spectroscopy and spectral imaging. The strategy to achieve our overall goals is to organize annual workshops for the training of students and young scientists in the areas of optics, photonics and imaging techniques applied to medicine, agriculture and the environment. We therefore build instruments for realistic diagnostic tools related to tropical diseases such as malaria, pollution monitoring or natural disasters affecting agriculture and environment, and to use optical diagnostics for quality control and improved crop yield.
