Name of the Institution: MUC WOMEN’S COLLEGE, BURDWAN
Year of Report : 2006 – 2007 Part B:
1. Activities reflecting the Goals and Objectives of the Institution: The College has formulated its goals and objectives towards which all its activities throughout
the year have been oriented.
The professed goals are empowerment of women, acquisition of better personality, skill-
development, college-society interface, and life-long belongingness to the institution.
During 2006-07 academic session the college organized an interdepartmental lecture
competition on ‘Law and Emancipation of Women’ on 15/12/06. Besides, two students, Barsha
Chakraborty and Samayeeta Biswas, represented the college to a three-day awareness Camp
entitled ‘Understanding gender’, organized by School of Women Studies, Jadavpur University
on 11-13 January 2007. The College also sent a team of 15 advanced learners to a Workshop on
‘Adolescent Crisis & Prevention’ held at Zilla Parishad Hall, Burdwan on 21/4/07 of which
Dr. Asit Patra and Dr. Mainak Mukherjee, both eminent psychiatrists, were speakers. Through
the competition and workshop the goal of women empowerment was addressed.
With the help of Chirayata, the College Alumni Association a talent profile of the mentally and
physically challenged students of five local schools for the disabled was organized in the
college. This was an endeavour to promote the causes of the ‘Otherwise able’ children not
belonging to the main stream.
The College organized a Thalassemia Carrier Detection Camp with the help of Himadri
Memorial Cancer
Welfare Trust on 26/8/06. As many as 804 students and staff benefited from the Programme.

determination Programme on 28/02/07, deworming of children Programme on 28/02/07, – all
programmes carried out by the NSS Unit of the college, helped the college to reach out to the
community to which it belongs.
Deworming of children Programme on 28/02/07
The skill orientation of learners was effectively pursued by introducing Crash Course in
Communicative English and Basic Computer Literacy for all students. Besides, the students of
Zoology Hons. were specially trained up in the skill of testing human Blood Group and as NSS
volunteers many of them under the guidance of a Doctor tested the Group of Blood of 251
students of two primary schools in the adopted ward at Goda (Ward no. 26), Burdwan.
Participation of some students of this college in a Seminar ‘Healthy Youth Healthy India’ held at
B.U on 11-12 February 2007, of two NSS volunteers – Juin Adhikari & Banti Roy in National
Integration Camp at New Delhi on 7-11 May 07 and the involvement of general students in
interactive social programmes on auspicious occasions like Independence Day and Republic
Day have helped them a lot to emerge as better personalities.
The infra-structural development, academic ambience, welfare schemes, extension activities and
co-curricular activities of the college have enabled the students to leave the college with a sweet
memory. Many of them have joined the Alumni Association out of an emotional bond with this
college.
2. New academic programmes initiated:
In order to enhance the expressive competence of the learners in English and make them
computer literate the college introduced two Crash Courses in Communicative English and
Computer Basics. Both the courses are customized for general students and are likely to be
immensely helpful to the learners.
3. Innovation in curricular design and transaction
Student centred learning activity is always prioritized by the faculty. On 15 December 2006 a
competition was held on the topic ‘Law and Emancipation of Women’. Students were helped
with materials and encouraged to deliver a talk on the topic. Sweta Singh of the Department of
English received the 1st prize for her impressive talk on the topic.
4. Inter-disciplinary programmes started:
Inter-disciplinary mode of teaching is generally practised in some overlapping components in
the curriculum designed for the departments of Microbiology, Environmental Studies and
Statistics. An Interdisciplinary Workshop on Bio-Diversity was held on 12 April 2006. It was
inaugurated by Prof. Aurobinda Das, Vice-Chancellor, Kalyani University. Prof. Amit Kr.
