T o take part in the Olympic Games is usually the highest point in any athlete´s career. Achieving this goal means to belong to a restrict group of sportsmen and sportswomen
whose achievements, almost superhuman, astonish and inspire millions worldwide.
However, and despite the media concern over athletic records and achievements, the truth is that, Olympism is entitled not to a chosen few but to all mankind!
When Pierre de Coubertin, still in the XIX century, decided to renew the Olympics, in his mind was much more than just creating an international sporting event. It was his will that the Games contributed to the spread of a new philosophy of life, committed with the continuous and balanced improvement of men´s physical, intellectual and spiritual spheres, in the context of peaceful coexistence among peoples.
Engaged in the promotion of this ideal, the International Quelfes Games Committee (whose name is inspired by an ancient algarvian legend), carries out its mission not only through the production of educational content but also, as an international meeting point, bringing together a broad range of educational institutions, engaged in social valuation of Olympic philosophy within its school community.
Working together with schools and different Olympic institutions, both at national and international level, we believe that, in the extraordinary legacy left by Pierre de Coubertin, lies the answer to many of the educational challenges we face today.
This is the flame we hold well high!Come join us!
At the International Quelfes Games Commitee we believe in the educational value of Olympism, particularly in its ability to make a difference when it comes to educate the youngest members of our society!
Olympism is a meritocracy, based on the educational value of good example, where there is no place for cheaters. Through sport, it looks to promote a healthy and active lifestyle, based on the joy of effort, sowing benefits that range from the improvement of intellectual performance to a greater ease in accepting the rules of social living. Its action give birth to citizens engaged in personal success while, at the same time, subdues these individualistic impulses by imposing a conductive line, mastered by the values of Excellence, Respect and Friendship. In other hand, Olympism fiercely denies any form of discrimination or violent resolution of conflicts. Its spirit tolds only of solidarity, tolerance and, above all, peace!

in thebeginningthere was Quelfes
Legend has it that, at the dawn of time, when the continent of Atlantis was submerged by the ocean´s fury, some survivors anchored the shores of Algarve. One of these was shipwrecked Arraúl that, in this new land, found his ancient love, Leia, princess of Atlantis, whom he married. However, despite being happy, they remained childless for years long. According to the old chronicles, Zephyrus, God of the west wind who ruled the area from the top of his mountain, advised Arraúl to seek the favor of the Olympian Gods. Doing so, he traveled to faraway Greece having reached Olympia (where the ancient Olympic Games were taking place), despite of the countless perils and hazards
sent by those who feared the influence of Zephyrus. Impressed by this display of faith, courage and will, Zeus, who attended the celebration, decided to grant the couple the most desired gift. A year later, on the following spring, Leia gave birth to a baby girl whom they named Quelfes. At that moment, Zeus voice echoed as a violent thunder:
- On behalf of this girl I bless all the children of the world. May the Olympian Gods be observed while in her name you shall celebrate games for the children of mankind!
And so Quelfes was born.

K elfi is a small wolf, descending from an old lineage charged by the ancient priests of Olympia to defend the Olympic ideals and pass them on to future generations.Fearless adventurer, he travels inspired by the ancient games, commanded by Zeus and celebrated by the survivors of mythical Atlantis to honour their princess and all children of mankind. In his journey, Kelfi will visit schools throughout the world, telling many stories about importance of sport and the values of Olympism in the life and development of
children. On the other hand, Kelfi is a learner, always seeking out to discover new things about the history, the culture and the people living on the places he´s about to visit! In real world, Kelfi was created by the portuguese illustrator Orlando do Ó in 2011 as part of a series of mascots originally proposed by the artist. The character immediately captivated the attention of Gustavo Marcos, who appointed it to star as main character in the work «Kelfi Olympic Games.”After the book launch, on 26 October 2012, Kelfi was officially adopted as standing mascot of the Quelfes Games Movement. The name Kelfi, proposed by Edgar Sousa, refers to Quelfes and it´s easily pronounceable in any language, for which met immediate consensus.

MISSION
7Olympic Education
T he International Quelfes Games Committee main goal is the promotion of Olympism as a philosophy of life and interdisciplinary teaching model, valuing effort, merit,
resilience, mutual help and good example, deeply
believing that “No child can be left behind”.
Setting itself as an international meeting and re-
flection point to a broad community of schools, the
International Quelfes Games Committee is aiming
at creating, promoting and sharing a series of edu-
cational content that, in light of Olympic ideals, can not only benefit the educational programs of each school but also to give raise to new debates and ap-proaches.
In this constructive process, the Committee is committed on building and developing relations of dialogue, cooperation and proximity to prestigious institutions such as the International Olympic Com-mittee, the International Olympic Academy, Olym-pic Museums and Studies Centres or the different
National Olympic Committees and Academies.
Ensuring the supervision of the local Quelfes Ga-
mes, the institution is seriously engaged on the esta-
blishment of an International Festival that, bringing
together the member schools, can work as a meeting
point to their own experiences, results and projects,
as well as a highly motivating sporting, cultural and
scientific event for the students involved.

OLYMPISM
INTERNATIONAL QUELFES GAMES COMMITTEE
www.kelfigames.com
P romoting the fundamental principles of Olympism, the International Quelfes Games Committee aims to assist schools, not only in developing their educational
projects, but also by providing up initiatives that can work as reflection meeting points to a increasingly enlarged community of schools.
As philosophy that calls for personal improvement and constant desire to excel, the Olympic doctrine, as conceived by Pierre de Coubertin, is a powerful educational formula, capable of enhancing the students to become active men and women, entrepreneurs endowed with a global vision and ability to overcome the constant and complex challenges of modern society, while observing the most basic ethical principles.
Vision 8
To believe in Olympism means a serious and continuous commitment to:
By offering differentiated teaching, the school
should seek to inspire the students through those
which, according to Pierre de Coubertin, constitute
the fundamental duties of the educator:
-Enhancement of sporting endeavour;
- Promotion of intellectual knowledge;
- Internalization of social conduct;
- Aspiration to moral perfection;
- Encouragement of artistic creativity;
Each student is a specific reality, with specific
educational needs of his own.
By promoting varied and differentiated teaching
practices it is possible to meet the pace of each
student and, simultaneously, maintain cohesion within
the school class.
THE RECOGNITION OF THE SPECIFICEDUCATIONAL NEEDS OF EACH
STUDENT02
THE HOLISTIC DEVELOPMENT
OF STUDENTS 01
The development of skills, such as critical thinking,
entrepreneurship and the ability to create, innovate
and communicate are essential, not only for the
affirmation of the individual in the competitive market
of human resources, as in the creation of added value
to the community.
The main wealth of humanity lies in its diversity.
On the contrary, fear is clearly an enemy. It is the
fear of what is different, of what we don´t know or
don´t control that brings out prejudice, distrust and
discord.
It is up to the school to actively broaden the
students’ horizons by putting them in contact with
different an unfamiliar realities, ultimately working for
the promotion of a friendly and peaceful world.
The pursuit for happiness is innate to human
existence.
Having in mind that this state of realization
depends, ultimately, of uncontrollable external factors,
it is scientifically proven that active, self-confident and
emotionally balanced children are most likely to be
happier adults.

06For students to internalize a culture of constant
overcoming and respect for others, it is essential
to promote individualized goals, both challenging
and realistic, that encourage them to always give
their best.
With this goal in mind, it is still important to instill
in children the ability to self-regulation. In other words,
the capacity of identifying their own strengths and
weaknesses as starting point do achieve success
Simultaneously, the school community must seek
evidence idols and examples that can inspire the
younger ones.
OLYMPISMPhilosophy 10
Olympism is a philosophy of life, exalting and combining in a balanced whole the qualities of body, will and mind.
A ccording to the Olympic Charter, Olympism is a philosophy of life, exalting and combining in a balanced whole the qualities of body, will and mind.
Blending sport with culture and education, Olympism seeks to create a way of life based on the joy of effort, the educational value of good example, social responsibility and respect for universal fundamental principles.»
Conceived by Pierre de Coubertin and heirs of the high ideals celebrated in Ancient Greece, the Olympic ideas are asserted as a humanist philosophy.Putting man at the center of its concerns, Olympism seeks to contribute actively, not only to the improvement of each individual but also for the construction of an environment
conducive to his development: universal peace & harmony.Proclaimer of sport as a universal right, Olympism is, however, much broader. The idea is that, through the benefits inherent to sport, humans could learn the most basic values of this philosophy and take it as a reference, in the definition of their way of life and
personal development.

Nutritional education
Sport can be understood as a set of physical activities, with specific goals and rules, in which participants seek to overcome the objectives that are proposed.Besides the obvious benefits at the locomotor
system level, the practice of sport is a major factor in the prevention of cardiovascular, metabolic and immunological deceases. On the other hand, it is also a valuable contribution to the improvement of intellectual performance, to the functional capacity in performing daily tasks or to the simple sense of well-being.
However, in order to represent an added value in human existence, sport must be practiced according to the principles of Olympism.
To foster victory at any price or to promote elite clubs for winners, excluding the less skilled, can generate dangerous negative effects such as the inability to manage defeat, the use of fraudulent means to obtain victory, the harassment of the vanquished by the victors or even the abandon of sports practice.
Hence one of the fundamental aspects promoted by the Quelfes Games Movement is the promotion of individual victory over the comparative one. The first is solid, sustained, unassailable, as opposed to the second, which is always relative and ephemeral.Without discrediting the merits of the overall victory, we feel that, pedagogically, the most important is to value the student for having done his best, overcoming his limits.
When Pierre de Coubertin adopted the Olympic motto in 1908, “The important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle, the essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.”, was not his goal to promote participation in sporting events with complete disinterest or indifference for the outcome.
«Athlete is the one who delights in effort and risk»PÍNDAR, poet (V B.C.)
SPORTWhat it means
to us 12
INTERNATIONAL QUELFES GAMES COMMITTEE
www.kelfigames.com
«The important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle, the essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.»Pierre de Coubertin
Rather, the motto articulates with the creed, Citius Altius Fortius (faster, higher, stronger), to the extent that encourages us to give our best, calling for our overcoming capacity. When it does, it is more valuable than the
“conquest of opponents”. Indeed, opponents (whom
we correctly should call antagonist contributors) are
not there to ashame or decrease us but to motivate and
strengthen our will.
Olympic principles are also fundamental at the level
of collective sports. Working as a team means to waive
our individual ego and submit to a common goal.
Similarly, it involves recognizing the strengths and
weaknesses of the team which, like any community,
should strive for that the force of the group outweighs
any individual weakness. So, instead of favoring
elites, teaching sport means we should build teams
containing students with different skill levels.
Sport according to the principles of Olympism also
implies a healthy relationship with victory and defeat,
on the basis that none of them is an absolute end. On
the contrary, their transience is part of a process of
continuous growth.
In fact, if the odds are always against man, the
truth is that the human being contains within himself
the capacity to strike back. Olympism brings along
this lesson; it teaches to lose and bear defeat without
losing face, feeding the determination of man and his
will to excel. Teaches that only by training can we earn
wings that will enable us to compete, to try, to dare,
to dream!
Because losing is also have the opportunity to
improve and progress, our ultimate goal and this the
true meaning of winning!
One of the main purposes of the Quelfes Games Movement is to foster the international meeting of different school communities with common interests in
promoting Olympism and the values associated with it.
Within the Committee, this goal is accomplished through the the General Council, a collegial body where all the affiliated schools have voice and vote on electing the next International Quelfes Games host, awarding the most innovative curricular proposals or issuing proposals to the assembly.
In classical antiquity the greek polis was the center of social life in which citizens could develop their physical, intellectual and artistic abilities.
Can my school becomea member?
A COMMUNITY OF SCHOOLS14
In the 21st Century, schools are present day polis and, as such, represent the most important dimension of any society.
Through active collaboration of everyone involved, we intend to carry out a work of reflection and sharing that, not only contributes to the creation of bridges and lasting bonds between teachers, students and parents of the member schools, as well as to compete for a determined response to the great teaching challenges of our time.
Being a member is not just belonging to a family of polis engaged in the development and success of their students. It represents, above all, a commitment to the promotion of values such as excellence, virtue, honor, tolerance, respect, perseverance and mutual aid!
