Outlet Box Outlet Box Figure 3 Outlet Box Provide Strong Support Recessed Outlet Box 4. Installing Your Fan Hanging the Fan REMEMBER to turn off the power. Follow the steps below to hang your fan properly. NOTE: The ceiling fan is supplied with two types of hanging assemblies; the standard ceiling installation using the downrod with ball and socket, and the “close-to-ceiling” installation. The “close-to-ceiling” installation is recommended in rooms with less than 8-foot ceilings or in areas where additional space is desired from the floor to the fan blades. When using the standard downrod installation, the distance from the ceiling to the bottom of the fan blades will be approximately 12 inches for the 4 1 /2-inch downrod. The “close-to-ceiling” installation reduces this distance to 8 1 /2 inches. Once you have decided which ceiling installation you will use, proceed with the following instructions. Where necessary, each section of the instructions will note the different procedures to follow for the two types of installation. STANDARD CEILING INSTALLATION 1. Remove the mounting bracket from the canopy by loosening the four screws on the top of the canopy. Remove the two non- slotted screws and loosen the slotted screws. This will enable you to remove the mounting bracket. 2. Place the downrod assembly through the ceiling canopy and insert the motor wires through the downrod assembly (Figure 5). 3. Push the pivot pin through the hanger and downrod holes (Figure 6). Secure the pivot pin by inserting the split pin and bending the ends to prevent it from falling out of the holes (Figure 6). 4. Secure the hanger and downrod by tightening the two screws on the hanger (Figure 6). Remove the mounting bracket from the canopy by loosening the four screws on the top of the canopy. Remove the two non- slotted screws and loosen the slotted screws. This will enable you to remove the mounting bracket. 2. Remove the decorative canopy bottom cover from the canopy by depressing the three studs (Figure 7). 3. Remove the three screws and spring washers from the hanger. 4. Mount the ceiling canopy to the hanger by tightening back the three screws and spring washers (Figure 8). Installing Fan to the Electrical Box 1. Pass the 120-volt supply wires through the center hole in the mounting bracket as shown in Figure 9. 2. Attach the mounting bracket on the elelctrical box by sliding the mounting bracket over the screws provided with the outlet box. When using close-to-ceiling mounting, it is important that the mounting bracket be level. If necessary, use leveling washers (not included) between the mounting bracket and the electrical box. Note that the flat side of the mounting bracket is to be toward the electrical box (Figure 9). 3. Securely tighten the two mounting screws. 4. Carefully lift the fan assembly up to the mounting bracket. If using close-to-ceiling mounting, hang the fan on the hook provided by utilizing one of the holes at the outer rim of the ceiling canopy. If using standard mounting, seat the hanger ball in the mounting bracket socket. Make sure the tab on the mounting bracket socket is properly seated in the groove in the hanger ball. (Figure 10). THE STANDARD BALL/DOWNROD MOUNTING METHOD MUST BE USED. MAKE SURE THE MOUNTING BRACKET SLOTS ARE ON THE LOWER SIDE BY SLIDING THE MOUNTING BRACKET FROM THE TOP DOWN. Figure 10 6. Installing Your Fan Making the Electrical Connections If you feel that you do not have enough electrical wiring knowledge or experience, have your fan installed by a licensed electrician. 1. Connect the ground conductor of the 120V supply (this may be a bare wire or a wire with green colored insulation) to the green ground lead(s) of the fan using a wire nut (Figure 11). When using standard ceiling installation, there are two green ground leads, one from the ceiling mounting bracket and one from the downrod. When using close-to-ceiling installation, there is only one green ground lead from the ceiling mounting bracket since the downrod is not used. 2. Connect the fan motor white wire to the supply white (neutral) wire using a wire nut (Figure 11). Connect the fan motor black wire and the light kit blue wire to the supply black (hot) wire using a wire nut (Figure 11). Do not connect the blue wire if light kit is not used. Your fan is now wired to be turned on and off from the pull chain switch. Turn the wire nut connections upward, spreading them apart so that the green (ground) and white wires will be on one side of the outlet box and the black and blue wires will be on the other side, and push them up into the outlet box. WARNING THE HOOK AS SHOWN IN FIG. 10 IS ONLY TO BALANCE FAN WHILE ATTACHING THE WIRING. FAILURE TO HANG AS SHOWN IN FIG. 10 MAY RESULT IN HOOK BREAKING CAUSING THE FAN TO FALL. HOOK MUST PASS FROM INSIDE TO OUTSIDE OF CANOPY. WARNING EACH WIRE NUT (WIRE CONNECTOR) SUPPLIED WITH THIS FAN IS DESIGNED TO ACCEPT UP TO ONE 12 GAUGE HOUSE WIRE AND TWO WIRES FROM THE FAN. IF YOU HAVE LARGER THAN 12 GAUGE HOUSE WIRING OR MORE THAN ONE HOUSE WIRE TO CONNECT TO THE FAN WIRING, CONSULT AN ELECTRICIAN FOR THE PROPER SIZE WIRE NUTS TO USE. WARNING TO AVOID POSSIBLE ELECTRICAL SHOCK, BE SURE ELECTRICITY IS TURNED OFF AT THE MAIN FUSE BOX BEFORE WIRING. NOTE: IF YOU ARE NOT SURE THE ELECTRICAL BOX AND FAN ARE GROUNDED, CONTACT A LICENSED ELECTRICIAN FOR ADVICE. THEY MUST BE GROUNDED FOR SAFE OPERATION. WARNING CHECK TO SEE THAT ALL CONNECTIONS ARE TIGHT, INCLUDING GROUND, AND THAT NO BARE WIRE IS VISIBLE AT THE WIRE NUTS, EXCEPT FOR THE GROUND WIRE. If you wish to control the light from a wall switch and the fan from the pull chain switch or if you wish to control both fan and light from wall switches, refer to wiring diagrams in Figure 12 and 13. 7. Installing Your Fan Figures 12 and 13 illustrate the wiring connections for optional wall control (available at your Hampton Bay Retailer). Figure 11 Diagram indicates light kit wiring Figure 12 Diagram indicates optional wiring Figure 13 Diagram indicates optional wiring SUPPLY CIRCUIT SUPPLY CIRCUIT SUPPLY CIRCUIT Finishing the Fan Installation STANDARD CEILING MOUNTING 1. Align the locking slots of the ceiling canopy with the two screws in the mounting bracket. Push up to engage the slots and turn clockwise to lock in place. Immediately tighten the two mounting screws firmly. 2. Install the remaining two mounting screws into the holes in the canopy and tighten firmly. 3. You may now proceed to attaching the fan blades. 8. Installing Your Fan CAUTION DO NOT OPERATE FAN UNTIL BLADES ARE IN PLACE. NOISE AND FAN DAMAGE COULD RESULT. Attaching the Fan Blades Note: Your fan blades are reversible. Select the blade side finish which best accentuates your decor. 1. Mount the blade holders to the fan blades using the screws provided – 3 per blade (Figure 14). Please note the rubber washers are pre-attached to the blade holder. 2. The fan blade assemblies are to be attached to the motor using the blade holder screws that are pre-installed into the blade holder. The procedure to attach blade assemblies is as follows: Figure 14 WARNING WHEN USING THE STANDARD BALL/DOWNROD MOUNTING, THE TAB IN THE RING AT THE BOTTOM OF THE MOUNTING BRACKET MUST REST IN THE GROOVE OF THE HANGER BALL. FAILURE TO PROPERLY SEAT THE TAB IN THE GROOVE COULD CAUSE DAMAGE TO WIRING. CLOSE- TO-CEILING MOUNTING 1. Carefully unhook the fan from the mounting bracket and align the locking slots of the ceiling canopy with the two screws in the mounting bracket. Push up to engage the slots and turn clockwise to lock in place. Immediately tighten the two mounting screws firmly. 2. Install the remaining two mounting screws into the holes in the canopy and tighten firmly. 3. You may now proceed to attaching the fan blades. WARNING LOCKING SLOTS OF CEILING CANOPY ARE PROVIDED ONLY AS AN AID TO MOUNTING. DO NOT LEAVE FAN ASSEMBLY UNATTENDED UNTIL ALL FOUR CANOPY SCREWS ARE ENGAGED AND FIRMLY TIGHTENED Mounting Screw Fan Blade Blade Holder Rubber Washer NOTE FAILURE TO FOLLOW ABOVE PROCEDURE COULD RESULT IN FAN WOBBLE. 9. Installing Your Fan a. Position the blade holder under the motor such that the alignment post on the blade holder fits into the slot in the motor. (Figure 15) b. Tighten the pre-installed blade holder screws. c. Install the remaining blade assemblies as per a & b. Blade Balancing All blades are grouped by weight. Because natural woods vary in density, the fan may wobble even though the blades are weight matched. The following procedure should correct most fan wobble. Check after each step. 1. Check that all blade and blade holder screws are secure. 2. Most fan wobble problems are caused when blade levels are unequal. Check this level by selecting a point on the ceiling above the tip of one of the blades. Measure this distance as shown in Figure 16. Rotate the fan until the next blade is positioned for measurement. Repeat for each blade. Measurements should be within 1/8”. Figure 16 Touch Ceiling 3. If blade wobble is still noticeable, interchanging two adjacent (side by side) blades can redistribute the weight and possibly result in smoother operation. Figure 15 Slot Alignment Post Pre-installed Blade Holder Screw 10. Light Kit Installation WARNING DO NOT USE PLIERS OR SCREWDRIVERS TO TIGHTEN THE THUMB SCREWS. OVERTIGHTENING OF THE THUMB SCREWS MAY CRACK THE LAMP SHADES Figure 17 Figure 19 Thumb Screw Lamp Shade Figure 18 Figure 20 Light Kit Screw Light Bulb 1. Carefully pull down the white and blue light wires from the switch housing. Connect the white wire from the fan to the white wire of the light kit. Connect the blue wire from the fan to the black wire of the light kit by securely inserting connectors together (Figure 17). 2. Carefully tuck all wires up into the switch housing. Install the light kit to the switch housing and secure with three screws (Figure 18). 3. Install the lamp shades into the lamp-fitters by tightening the thumb screws (Figure 19). 4. Install CFL light bulbs (max. 13W each) into the lampholders (Figure 20). Light Kit Switch Housing Switch Housing Connectors 11. Operating Your Fan Turn on the power and check the operation of the fan. The pull chain controls the fan speed as follows: 1 pull – High, 2 pulls – Medium, 3 pulls – Low, and 4 pulls – Off. Speed settings for warm or cool weather depend on factors such as the room size, ceiling height, number of fans, and so on. The slide switch controls direction: forward (switch down) or reverse (switch up).* Warm weather – (Forward) A downward air flow creates a cooling effect as shown in Figure 21. This allows you to set your air conditioner on a higher setting without affecting your comfort. Cool weather – (Reverse) An upward airflow moves warm air off the ceiling area as shown in Figure 22. This allows you to set your heating unit on a lower setting without affecting your comfort. * NOTE WAIT FOR FAN TO STOP BEFORE CHANGING THE SETTING OF THE SLIDE SWITCH. Figure 21 Figure 22 Here are some suggestions to help you maintain your fan. 1. Because of the fan’s natural movement, some connections may become loose. Check the support connections, brackets, and blade attachments twice a year. Make sure they are secure. (It is not necessary to remove fan from ceiling.) 2. Clean your fan periodically to help maintain its new appearance over the years. Use only a soft brush or lint-free cloth to avoid scratching the finish. The plating is sealed with a lacquer to minimize discoloration or tarnishing. Do not use water when cleaning. This could damage the motor, or the wood, or possibly cause an electrical shock. 3. You can apply a light coat of furniture polish to the wood blades for additional protection and enhanced beauty. Cover small scratches with a light application of shoe polish. 4. There is no need to oil your fan. The motor has permanently lubricated bearings. 12. Care of Your Fan IMPORTANT MAKE SURE THE POWER IS OFF AT THE ELECTRICAL PANEL BOX BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT ANY REPAIRS. REFER TO THE SECTION “MAKING ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS” Problem Solution Fan will not start. 1. Check circuit fuses or breakers. 2. Check line wire connections to fan and switch wire connections in switch housing. CAUTION: Make sure main power is off. Fan sounds noisy. 1. Make sure all motor housing screws are snug. 2. Make sure the screws that attach the fan blade bracket to the motor hub are tight. 3. Make sure wire nut connections are not rubbing against each other or the interior wall of the switch housing. CAUTION: Make sure main power is off. 4. Allow a 24-hour “breaking-in” period. Most noises associated with a new fan disappear during this time. 5. If using an optional Ceiling Fan light kit, make sure the screws securing the glassware are tight. Check that the light bulb is also secure. 6. Some fan motors are sensitive to signals from solid-state variable speed controls. If you have installed this type of control, choose and install another type of control. 7. Make sure the ceiling canopy is a short distance from the ceiling. It should not touch the ceiling. 13. Troubleshooting 14. Specifications FAN SIZE 52” SPEED Low Med. 6. Installing Your Fan

Making the ElectricalConnectionsIf you feel that you do not have enough electricalwiring knowledge or experience, have your faninstalled by a licensed electrician.

1. Connect the ground conductor of the 120Vsupply (this may be a bare wire or a wirewith green colored insulation) to the greenground lead(s) of the fan using a wire nut(Figure 11).

When using standard ceiling installation, there are two green ground leads, one fromthe ceiling mounting bracket and one fromthe downrod.

When using close-to-ceiling installation, there is only one green ground lead fromthe ceiling mounting bracket since thedownrod is not used.

2. Connect the fan motor white wire to thesupply white (neutral) wire using a wire nut(Figure 11). Connect the fan motor blackwire and the light kit blue wire to the supplyblack (hot) wire using a wire nut (Figure11). Do not connect the blue wire if lightkit is not used. Your fan is now wired to beturned on and off from the pull chain switch.Turn the wire nut connections upward, spreading them apart so that the green(ground) and white wires will be on one sideof the outlet box and the black and bluewires will be on the other side, and pushthem up into the outlet box.

WARNINGTHE HOOK AS SHOWN IN FIG. 10 IS ONLY TO

BALANCE FAN WHILE ATTACHING THE WIRING.FAILURE TO HANG AS SHOWN IN FIG. 10 MAY

RESULT IN HOOK BREAKING CAUSING THE FANTO FALL. HOOK MUST PASS FROM INSIDE TO

OUTSIDE OF CANOPY.

WARNINGEACH WIRE NUT (WIRE CONNECTOR)

AND TWO WIRES FROM THE FAN. IF YOU HAVELARGER THAN 12 GAUGE HOUSE WIRING ORMORE THAN ONE HOUSE WIRE TO CONNECT

TO THE FAN WIRING, CONSULTAN ELECTRICIAN FOR THE PROPER SIZE

WIRE NUTS TO USE.

WARNINGTO AVOID POSSIBLE ELECTRICAL SHOCK,

BE SURE ELECTRICITY IS TURNED OFF AT THEMAIN FUSE BOX BEFORE WIRING.NOTE: IF YOU ARE NOT SURE THE

ELECTRICAL BOX AND FAN ARE GROUNDED,CONTACT A LICENSED ELECTRICIAN FOR

ADVICE. THEY MUST BE GROUNDEDFOR SAFE OPERATION.

WARNINGCHECK TO SEE THAT ALL CONNECTIONS ARE

TIGHT, INCLUDING GROUND, AND THAT NOBARE WIRE IS VISIBLE AT THE WIRE NUTS,

EXCEPT FOR THE GROUND WIRE.

c. Install the remaining blade assemblies asper a & b.

Blade BalancingAll blades are grouped by weight. Becausenatural woods vary in density, the fan maywobble even though the blades are weightmatched.

The following procedure should correct mostfan wobble. Check after each step.

1. Check that all blade and blade holder screwsare secure.

2. Most fan wobble problems are caused whenblade levels are unequal. Check this levelby selecting a point on the ceiling abovethe tip of one of the blades. Measure thisdistance as shown in Figure 16. Rotate thefan until the next blade is positioned formeasurement. Repeat for each blade.Measurements should be within 1/8”.

Figure 16

3. If blade wobble is still noticeable, interchanging two adjacent (side by side)blades can redistribute the weight andpossibly result in smoother operation.

11. Operating Your FanTurn on the power and check the operation ofthe fan. The pull chain controls the fan speed asfollows: 1 pull – High, 2 pulls – Medium, 3 pulls– Low, and 4 pulls – Off.

Speed settings for warm or cool weather dependon factors such as the room size, ceiling height, number of fans, and so on.

The slide switch controls direction: forward(switch down) or reverse (switch up).*

Warm weather – (Forward) A downward airflow creates a cooling effect as shown in Figure21. This allows you to set your air conditioneron a higher setting without affecting yourcomfort.

Cool weather – (Reverse) An upward airflowmoves warm air off the ceiling area as shown inFigure 22. This allows you to set your heatingunit on a lower setting without affecting yourcomfort.

* NOTEWAIT FOR FAN TO STOP BEFORE CHANGING

THE SETTING OF THE SLIDE SWITCH.

Figure 21 Figure 22

Here are some suggestions to help you maintainyour fan.

1. Because of the fan’s natural movement, some connections may become loose.Check the support connections, brackets, and blade attachments twice a year. Makesure they are secure. (It is not necessary toremove fan from ceiling.)

2. Clean your fan periodically to help maintainits new appearance over the years. Use onlya soft brush or lint-free cloth to avoidscratching the finish. The plating is sealedwith a lacquer to minimize discoloration ortarnishing. Do not use water when cleaning. This could damage the motor, or the wood,or possibly cause an electrical shock.

3. You can apply a light coat of furniture polishto the wood blades for additional protectionand enhanced beauty. Cover small scratcheswith a light application of shoe polish.

4. There is no need to oil your fan. The motorhas permanently lubricated bearings.

12. Care of Your FanIMPORTANT

MAKE SURE THE POWER IS OFF AT THEELECTRICAL PANEL BOX BEFORE YOUATTEMPT ANY REPAIRS. REFER TO THE

SECTION “MAKING ELECTRICALCONNECTIONS”

Problem SolutionFan will not start. 1. Check circuit fuses or breakers.

2. Check line wire connections to fan and switch wire connections in switch housing.CAUTION: Make sure main power is off.

Fan sounds noisy. 1. Make sure all motor housing screws are snug.

2. Make sure the screws that attach the fan blade bracket to the motor hub are tight.

3. Make sure wire nut connections are not rubbing against each other or the interior wall of the switchhousing.CAUTION: Make sure main power is off.

4. Allow a 24-hour “breaking-in” period. Most noises associated with a new fan disappear during thistime.

5. If using an optional Ceiling Fan light kit, make sure the screws securing the glassware are tight.Check that the light bulb is also secure.

6. Some fan motors are sensitive to signals from solid-state variable speed controls. If you have installedthis type of control, choose and install another type of control.

7. Make sure the ceiling canopy is a short distance from the ceiling. It should not touch the ceiling.
