Peddling your papers . . . ! Putting out aweekly to the trade can be pretty difficultwhen things are as bad as they are out there.Could be that we could lose a weekly to therecession. My spies tell me they are hoping tohold out until conference time. That's a longway off. (EC: Should I be looking for anotherjob???) NO! I'm talking about someone else!!!

Nice jeans, Pal!!! I happened to sit behind aTV cameraperson at a recentpress conference.Couldn't see anything. No one asked questions. No one sat down. Why bother? Feedbackregarding my previous comments indicatedthat atpoliticalpress conferences, the camerasare usually up front because there aren't anypeople in the chairs. Thank you Gail ... !Gail O'Brien, promotiondirector at CJEZ-FM, sent over a couple ofpairs of tickets for the new Rick Moranismovie. Good to see someone on their toes. Most stations don't have promotion directors,or promotion people who know what'shappening outside of the station. (EC: Now,why would that be?) Cost cutting ... I guess!

Trouble in newsland . . . ? It's over, butthe resentment stays. Talk about rubbingsalt ... ! Apparently management of a recently -struck major news packager, circulated a memothanking those who stayed on and refused tostrike. I think management's appreciation goeswithout saying, certainly not by putting it inprint. They've also cancelled travellingprivileges (expenses etcetera!) for their troopsin the field. But one undaunted scribe is off ona trip to cover a major event in the U.S., andhe's paying his own expenses. You know theold expression, "Through rain, sleet andsnowstorms . . !" (EC: Stop! More movement at radio ... ? Is it true thata morning team will move its tent to higherground . . . say from AM to FM? (EC: Theyweren't funny on AM . . . !)

Cute . . . ! I was watching The Journal theother night and saw an interesting interviewwith Holly Cole. She remembered when shewas young, living in the Maritimes, andlistening to Stompin' Tom Connors' radiocommercials for Prince Edward Island'sTourism Department. She said she rememberedevery word of the commercial even to thisday, and promptly did . . . word for word, including the telephone number, and she didit to Bud The Spud. (EC: That's REALCanadian remembering . . . !)

Is this just the beginning ... ? There wasa time when broadcasters were crying theblues and predicting that radio stations wouldclose because of the hardships the Canconruling was causing. Well, they are beginningto tighten up, close stations and join forces. Some of them even make strange bedfellows. With the two AM stations in Sault Ste. Mariewinding down, after I don't know how manyyears of being on the air, the Cancon ruling, thankfully, isn't at the base of the trouble. It'stight, or no money at all. While the two ownersare able to consolidate their operations, whathappens to the poor employees, and how manyof them are being turned out? One Ottawa/Hull -based observer says this is just thebeginning. Now, I'm wondering. If thosestations go off the air and the licenses areturned into the CRTC, does that make thosefrequencies open to whoever wants to makea bid for them? Stupid question? Justasking . . . ! (EC: Don't ask . . . 9

Jackie Richardson's Mabel Mercer ... !Jackie Richardson's intimate and charmingcabaret portrayal of the legendary MabelMercer is superb. Richardson has an

unbelievable projection and smoothstorytelling confidence that gave me a warmand fuzzy feeling all over, not unlike her"Jackie" role in the Meals on Wheelscommercials. Weaving cameo highlights ofthe jazz star's life with the songs that made herfamous creates a hushed silence and an energybond between Richardson and her audience. Ittakes a couple of numbers for them to get upthe nerve to interrupt with applause after eachnumber. She has created a most believablemusical story of Mabel Mercer. Casting underway for The Kander and Ebb Musical

Casting is currently going ahead in Toronto and New York for five extraordinary

performers for the upcoming staging of And The World Goes 'Round -- The Kander And Ebb Musical.

Their talents will have to be extraordinary in that they will be required to not only sing

and dance, but twirl batons, hop on pianos, plunk banjos, ride shopping carts, and even

time -step on roller blades. The musical is being produced by The

Live Entertainment Corporation of Canada (LIVENT). Toronto's recently refurbished

Bayview Playhouse will be the setting for the limited engagement, which will begin previews

in November. The musical showcases the careers of

composer John Kander and lyricist Fred Ebb, collaborators for 26 years. Their most recent

musical, Kiss of the Spider Woman, is currently playing Toronto's St. Lawrence Centre.

The pair has written material for several star entertainers including Frank Sinatra,

Barbra Streisand, Lauren Bacall, Shirley MacLaine, and Goldie Hawn.

The musical will feature 30 songs from their many musicals, including: New York, New York; How Lucky Can You Get; A Quiet

Thing; Cabaret; Maybe This Time; The Grass Is Always Greener; All That Jazz; and Ring

Them Bells. Also to be featured are songs from their

film scores: Cabaret; Funny Lady; and New York, New York. Songs from several television

specials will also be included. The musical was first staged in the summer of 1989 with Oscar -winning actress

Olympia Dukakis as artistic director. It opened on March 18, 1991 at New York's Westside

Theatre, where it enjoyed a year -long run. It was the winner of Drama Desk and Outer Critics' Circle Awards in 1991 for Best

Musical Revue, and was conceived by director Scott Ellis, choreographer Susan Stroman and

librettist David Thompson, all of whom will collaborate in staging the Canadian production.

The show's original designers, Bill Hoffman (scenic design), Lindsay Davis (costume design), and Phil Monat (lighting

design), are also in for the Toronto production. Musical direction and arrangements are by

David Loud, with orchestrations by David Krane.

eight -year layoff had never occurred. Still, he's confident that the group's core audience will remember them and that the band can

come up with material that willattract younger fans.

"If you don't have great songs, it's not going to happen. You just hope that you've

written one or two great songs, at least, and the luck will be with you."

The current tour has been drawing so much attention that it has now been extended

through August and may also take in some American dates. The group will treat fans to

most of its greatest hits, including You Could Have Been A Lady, I'm On Fire For You Baby, You Won't Dance With Me, I Like To Rock, Just Between You And Me, and Sign Of The

Gypsy Queen. The band will go into the studio to record

the new album after the tour. They will then hit the road again to showcase the new material on another large-scale tour. Rock 'n' roll is a

    vicious game.

Loreena McKennitt set for Ontario Place Forum WEA recording artist Loreena McKennitt

recently returned from a tour of Europe that included dates in Spain, Portugal, England

and Ireland. The press she received, particularly in

Ireland, was exceptional. Also on her itinerary was a date at London's Hammersmith Odeon and one at the Glastonbury Festival, which also featured performances by Barenaked

Ladies and Spirit of the West. Back home in Canada, McKennitt is busy recording music for Full Circle, a television

nature series. She will play the Ontario Place Forum in Toronto on Aug. 7. Accompanying

her will be Steve Lucas (string bass), Rick Lazar (percussion), Hugh Marsh (violin), Anne

Bourne (keyboards/cello), and Brian Hughes (guitars).

McKennitt is currently on release with a new single, Lady Of Shallot, included on

Warner Music CD compilation 140. The track is also included on McKennitt's WEA/Quinlan

Road album, The Visit, which has sold in excess of 100,000 copies (platinum) in Canada.

The album has been released in 26 countries.

BIG SUGAR - Blues/JazzBig SugarHypnotic/A&M - 713561005-2-0This terrific trio is a stalwart of the TorontoQueen Street music scene with its uniqueblend of subtlety and power, blues andJazz, and rock and swing. Leader GordieJohnson is a versatile guitarist and arrangerand the veteran rhythm section of TerryWilkins (Rough Trade, David Wilcox) onstand-up bass and Al Cross (Jane Siberry,Raffi) on drums masterfully keep up withJohnson's often improvised sounds. Thealbum was produced by the band and TornTreumuth and was recorded live off thefloor with a live audience, adding anotherelement of excitement to the project. Onthis album the band is at its best on rockiernumbers like Come Back Baby, MotherlessChildren, and Groundhog Day. The slow, rolling blues of Sleep In Late and theLouisiana bayou -influenced Just AboutSunrise are also done with exceeding skill. However, the sound comes up just a littlebit flat on the jazz standards, BemshaSwing, Stardust and 'Round Midnight. Butkudos should go out to the Infidels' MollyJohnson for her vocal performance on thelatter song. - SM

HOLLY DUNN - CountryGetting It DunnWarner Bros - CD -26949-PA fairly new talent who didn't fare to wellwith her first album, Dunn is now workingwith a new production team: Paul Worleyand Ed Seay. She co -wrote four songs onthis album with her brother Chris Watersand Tom Shapiro, both well-known onNashville's Music Row. The four, in fact, are key tracks: You Can Have Him, I'veHeard It All Before, As Long As You BelongTo Me, and Let Go. However, don't overlookHalf A Million Teardrops, one of the trackswhere Holly's vocal richness dominates.Dunn is not restricted to the country foldand she could experience crossover actionwith one or more tracks. - WG

    RAWLINS CROSS - Roots/RockCrossing the BorderRCN Records - RCCD-102

The second release from this Maritime -based band has been the top -sellingindependent album at Sam the RecordMan's flagship store in Toronto anddeserves to be noticed elsewhere acrossthe country. While there is no song asimmediately catchy as Colleen, theeffervescent single from 1989's A Turn ofthe Wheel, there is still some solid stuffhere. Bagpipes and tin whistles augmentthe guitar/bass/drums lineup to make anentertaining blend of traditional roots musicand pop and roll. Chessboard Dancer is thefirst track aimed at radio. Legendary, Peaceon the Inside, and Open Road stand outamong the songs with lyrics. Israel Got aRabbit, dedicated to the memory of reveredNewfoundland accordion player RufusGuinchard, is tops among the fiveinstrumentals. While enjoyable on disc, this music is best heard live. This is anuplifting album that could, at leasttemporarily, take Newfoundlanders' mindsoff the cod catch moratorium. - SM

DR. JOHN - Blues/JazzGoin' Back To New OrleansWarner - 9 26940-2-PThe old night tripper goes back to his rootsand gives listeners a history of New Orleansmusic from the 1850s to the 19505 andbeyond. This is thefirst album Dr. John hasrecorded in New Orleans, and onlymusicians native to the city were invited toplay, giving it a down-home authentic feel.Milneburg Joys is a raunchy yet soulfultake on an old Jelly Roll Morton song. TheNeville Brothers provide soothing, harmonicbacking vocals on Do You Call That ABuddy?. Good Night, Irene uses a muchmore lively and contemporary arrangementthan when the Weavers first had a hit withthe Leadbelly standard. Cabbage Head is afun song which highlights the Doctorsbarrelhouse piano skills. My Indian Red,Didn't He Ramble, How Come My DogDon't Bark (When You Come Around), BlueMonday, and Scald Dog Medley/I Can't GoOn are other standouts in this 18 -songcollection. An all-star group plays on thetitle track which ends the album. PeteFountain contributes a hot clarinet solo, while Al Hirt solos on trumpet and CharlesNeville does the same on the tenorsaxophone. And the Neville Brothers againcome through with some stirring vocalharmonies. Anyone interested in the originsof New Orleans blues and jazz should addthis album to their collection. - SM

birthplace. His new album should beamazing. State of Love and Trust by PearlJam is another track to look out for. TheLovemongers vocalist sounds so much likeRobert Plant on their live cover of LedZeppelin's Battle of Evermore t hat it's almostscary. Mother Love Bone's Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns also owes a debt to Zep.Jimi Hendrix's May This Be Love is the onlyold track on the album but it fits right in withthe new stuff. Other contributing acts areAlice In Chains, Mudhoney, ScreamingTrees, Smashing Pumpkins, andSoundgarden. Chris Cornell,Soundgarden's lead singer, also does asolo number with acoustic guitar. I haven'theard much about this movie but thesoundtrack could at least make it a hit withfans of these acts. - SM

ME PHI MEOneBMG - 07863-61036-2-NThis debut album is somewhat disjointed, pushes New Age -type messages, andsometimes borders on pretentiousness, butdang it all anyways, it still contains at leastfive excellent songs. Me Phi Me combineselements of rap, acoustic rock, hip hop, folkand R&B into a hybrid he calls big beatpoetry. Dream of You reminds me of twoother innovative rap acts, the DreamWarriors and Shinehead. The acousticguitar on Sad New Day and Road to Life andNot My Brotha's harmonica are niceadditions to the rap and mellow danceelements. Black Sunshine is a clear attackon homelessness. It takes the chorus fromJohnny Nash's I Cart See Clearly Now andis highlighted by a ragamuffin rap from DJPure Ruff Stuff. All in all, this is an intriguingintroduction to a visionary 21 -year -oldartist. - SM

Cookie, Heather and Rayleneexcel both when singing solo or whiledelivering sweet harmonies in support of alead. John Morris is a terrific fiddler andisn't too shabby on the ivories either. Jimmyis the main songwriter and also sings, playsacoustic guitar and drums. This album isthe family's second and was quite popularin the Maritimes, helping them earn threeEast Coast Music Awards in 1992. Capitolis now releasing the first two independentalbums in order to bring this talented groupmore widespread attention. The f irst single,Orangedale Whistle, entered the RPM 100Country Tracks chart at No. 91 last week. It's also a prime candidate for crossoveraction on to the adult contemporary chart.,The rest of the album is made up of Gaelicballads, traditionals with new arrangements,Middle medley, an instrumernal jig and fouroriginal Rankin Family songs. Key tracksinclude Fisherman's Son, Tell My Ma, andGillis Mountain. - SM

The album'sfirst two tracks were written by Cornell as atribute to the late Andrew Wood, singer forMother Love Bone, who died of a heroinoverdose. Much format change now more hits -orientedMuchMusic has changed its programming toincorporate more music video flow into itsprime time lineup.

The change, which took place July 6,means that the specialty shows which used tooccupy the 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. (ET) time slotshave all been moved and rep laced by a quicker, hits -oriented format. The station is gamblingthat people will follow the specialty shows totheir new time slots while a larger audiencewill tune in to the core programming.

MuchMusic put the specialty shows inprime time when it moved to basic cable in aneffort to get its programming into televisionlistings. Now that the specialty shows havebecome institutionalized, it's hoped that theratings will be given a boost by the newformat.

"We're in as many homes as we canpossibly get into now," explains John Martin,MuchMusic' s director ofmusicprogramming."And our ratings are really good, but we seem'to have reached a plateau. So if we're going togo the next mile, we're going to give this ashot."

The core flow programming will play

Seen at R&R meet in Los Angeles, Jeff Vidier(The Mix, Montreal), Ross Winters (CITIWinnipeg), Wayne Webster (The Mix, Toronto),Garth Brooks, Paul Church (Capitol Canada),Jim Johnson (CFMI Vancouver), John Parlkhal(Joint Communications), Pat Holiday (The Mix,Toronto), and in front Peter Diemer (CapitolCanada), and Eric Samuels (HTZ-FM St.Catharines).

Colours of Caribanadisplayed at College ParkCaribana opened its first gallery insideToronto's College Park on June 25 with TheColours of Caribana.

The gallery features costume displaysand works of art from well-known Canadianphotographers Nina Gouveia and Pierre St -Laurent.

Gouveia, who graduated from the OntarioCollege of Art, exhibits photographs from hercollection of Caribbean work. Herphotographswere recently exhibited at the Seattle ArtMuseum.

St -Laurent has been photographingCaribana events since 1986.

The gallery has been mounted courtesyofCo liege Park which commissioned the show. All sales will go to Caribana. College Park isalso hosting a Carnival Shop whereinformation is available on this year's eventwhich is taking place July 20 to August 3.

more recurrent material and, as a result, thelight rotation playlist has been shortened. Thestation will retain its Cancon quota but moreobscure American and European videos willbe moved from the rotation. "Hopefully thatstuff will show up in our specialty shows, butit won't be in the flow as much," says Martin.

Martin says people shouldn't worry thatthe programming change will result in a strictTop 40 format at the station. "We don't useanything with any resemblance to any radioplaylist that I've ever seen.

"We basically play the best videosavailable from any source. Just tightening upour playlist is not going to change the natureof the station at all."

Childhood Favorites willintroduce classics to kidsA new label called Childhood Favorites, aimedat the three -to -seven age bracket, has beenintroduced by A&M Records.

Childhood Favorites is a series of eightfull-length recordings, grouped thematically, thatprovide a comprehensive cross-section ofclassics in a format geared for young children. The selections provide a wide variety ofdramatic changes in tempo, volume andinstrumentation.

The length of the musical excerpts rangesfrom 30 seconds to two minutes. They'reinterspersed with short, snappy dialogue toprovide an entry point for the children, and toallow them to familiarize themselves withvarious composer's names and musical terms.

The Childhood Favorites series is thebrainchild of Toronto's Bonnie Taylor, abusinesswoman and mother of two, whoselifelong passion for classical music inspiredher to spend more than two years putting theproject together.

The first six recordings in the series willbe released Aug. 4, with two more to follownext spring.
