Important Safety InstructionsRead these safety instructions thoroughly before using your machine, and keep them handy in case you need to refer to themlater. For cardiac pacemaker users This product and the drum cartridge emit low level magnetic flux. If you use a cardiac pacemaker and feel abnormalities, please stay away from this product and the drum cartridge, and consult your doctor. Do not disassemble or modify. There are high-temperature and high-voltage components inside the machine which may resultin a fire or electrical shock. Follow all warnings and instructions marked on the machine.

n Location Do not place the machine near alcohol, paint, thinner or other inflammable substances. If inflammable substances come into contact with electrical parts inside the machine, itmay result in a fire or electrical shock.

Do not block or cover the ventilation port or any openings on the machine with objects,as this may result in a fire. Place the machine on a flat, stable, vibration-free surface that is strong enough tosupport its weight (approx. 22.6 kg iR1230/iR1270F, 20.5 kg iR1210).

Make sure the area is free from dust. Avoid poorly ventilated locations.During use, the machine generates ozone. However, the amount of ozone generated is notenough to affect the human body. Nevertheless, if the machine is used for a prolongedperiod of time in a poorly ventilated room, or when making a large quantity of prints, besure to ventilate the room to make the working environment as comfortable as possible. Make sure the location is not affected by extreme temperature changes, and always staysbetween 20C and 25C. Make sure the relative humidity of the area is between 40% and 70%.

1Introduction

Your machine is designed with the latest technology to provide trouble-free operation. If you encounter a problem with themachines operation, try to solve it by using the information in Chapter 6. If you cannot solve the problem or if you think yourmachine needs servicing, contact your local authorised Canon dealer or the Canon help desk.

Keep the machine away from direct sunlight.Do not use or store the machine outdoors.Do not install the machine near devices that contain magnets or generate magnetic fields, such as speakers.Make sure the machine is approximately 10 cm away from walls and other equipment for proper ventilation.

n Power Supply Do not damage or modify the power cord and power plug. Also do not place heavyobjects on the power cord, pull on it, or extensively bend it. These actions may causeelectrical damage and result in a fire or electrical shock.

Do not insert or unplug the power plug with wet hands, as this may result in electricalshock.

During electrical storms, disconnect the telephone line and unplug the power cord fromthe power outlet. Electrical storms may cause damage to the machine and result in a fireor electrical shock.

If dust accumulates around the plug of the power cord when it is connected to a power outlet, unplug the machine and wipe the plug with a clean, dry cloth. For the iR1270F model, do not plug the machine into the same circuit with appliances suchas an air conditioner, television or copier. These devices generate an electrical noise, and mayinterfere with your machines operation.

Plug the machine into a standard 220-240 V AC power outlet. Operate the machine only from the type of power sourceindicated on the machines label. If you are not sure of the type of power available, consult your local power company. Use only the power cord that came with the machine. Unplug the machine in the following conditions:- When the power cord or plug is damaged or frayed.- If liquid has spilled into the machine.- If the machine has been exposed to rain or water.- If the machine does not operate normally when you have followed the instructions in the guides included with your machine.Adjust only those controls that are covered by the instructions in the guides since improper adjustment of other controls mayresult in damage and will often require extensive work by a qualified technician to restore the product to normal operation.- If the machine has been dropped or damaged.- If the machine exhibits a distinct change in performance, indicating a need for servicing.

Chapter 2Paper HandlingPrint Media RequirementsFor high-quality copies, we recommend using paper and transparencies recommended by Canon. Some types of paper availableat office supply stores may not be suitable for this machine. If you have any questions about paper and transparencies, consultyour dealer or Canon Customer Relations.

In order to prevent paper jams, follow the procedure below for storing paper: To prevent moisture built-up, store remaining paper wrapped tightly in its original package. Store paper in a dry location, outof direct sunlight. To prevent curling, store paper flat, not upright. After copying, do not leave paper in the stack bypass.

Unacceptable PaperDo not copy on the following types of copy stock; doing so will result in paper jams. Severely curled or wrinkled paper Transparencies for full-colour copiers or printers Paper which has already been copied using a digital full-colour copier (Do not copy on the reverse side either.) Paper which has been printed on using a thermal transfer printer (Do not copy on the reverse side either.) Never attempt to make copies on full-colour transparencies. Doing so may result in copier malfunction.

2Loading Papern Loading Paper in the Paper DrawerThis section describes how to load paper in the paper drawer. To make copies on any other size paper, use the optional paper drawer. p. 2-5. When loading paper, take care not to cut your hands on the edges of the paper.

1 Grip the paper drawer handle, and draw it out towards you until the paperdrawer comes to a stop.

Paper Handling

2

2 Open a package of paper, and remove the paper stack. If the paper is curled, uncurl it before placing it in the paper drawer. Failure to do so willcause paper creases and a paper jam. 64 to 80 g/m 2 paper is acceptable. The paper drawer holds up to approximately 250 sheets of 80 g/m 2 paper.

3 Load the paper stack beneath the paper drawers length guides claws a andwidth guides claws b. Make sure that the paper stack does not exceed the length and width guides claws in thepaper drawer. Failure to do so will cause a paper jam. Do not load extra paper when there is still paper left in the paper drawer. Only load one size of paper into the paper drawer. Do not load different sizes of paperinto the paper drawer at the same time. The paper drawer is for plain paper, coloured paper or recycled paper only. Loadingother paper in the paper drawer may cause a paper jam. Do not load labels or transparencies into the paper drawer.

4 Gently insert the paper drawer as far as it will go. If copies are curled, or a paper jam occurs, remove the paper stack from the paperdrawer. Turn it over and then place it in the paper drawer. If you load paper while making copies, do not load a different paper size.

2-3

Closing the paper drawerWhen closing the paper drawer, make sure to push it in completely as far as it will go. If copying is performed when the paperdrawer is not pushed in completely, it will cause a paper jam.

If copy paper is sticking out of the paper drawerSometimes, when you pull out the paper drawer, paper may stick out, as shown in the illustration below. Make sure that the paperis neatly loaded into the paper drawer, before you push the paper drawer back into the main unit.

2-4

2n Adjusting a Paper Drawer to Hold a Different Paper Size (Optional PaperDrawer)If you want to load a different paper size in the optional paper drawer, follow the procedure described below to adjust the paperdrawer guides. You can adjust the paper drawer to hold the following standard paper sizes : A4 and B5.If you want to make copies with any other size paper, use the stack bypass. ( p. 2-8) You can load LTR and LGL size paper. ( p. 2-6)

1 Remove the paper drawer from the main unit, and remove all loaded copypaper.

Paper Handling

2

2 Align the left and right locking levers on the width guides to the "Unlock"position.

3 Slide the width guides to the width mark for the paper to be loaded in the paperdrawer.

4 Return the locking levers on the width guides to the "Lock" position.

5 Tilt the length guide over towards the inside of the paper drawer to remove.

2-5

6 Fit in the length guide into the length mark for the paper to be loaded in thepaper drawer.

7 Load the paper. (See "Loading Paper in the paper drawer" on p. 2-3) If you have changed the paper size in the paper drawer, change the setting of DRAWERPAPER SIZE of COMMON SETTINGS in ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS accordingly.( p. 7-2)

n Loading LTR and LGL Size Paper in the Paper Drawern Removing the Stopper

1 Remove the paper drawer from the main unit, and remove all copy paper.2 Unlock the locking levers on the width guides (a), and bring the width guidesto the centre (b). The stopper is mounted at the inner side of the paper drawer.

3 Slide the stopper toward the width guide while pushing down on theprotruding part with one hand (as shown in the figure), and push the stopperup from the rear side of the paper drawer with the other hand.

4 Remove the stopper as shown in the figure.

2-6

25 Align the width and the length guides with the LTR or LGL marks and lockthe locking levers on the width guides.

6 Load the paper. ( p. 2-3) When loading A4-size paper, first reinsert the stopper into its original position. Copyingwithout reinserting the stopper will cause a paper jam.

n Inserting the Stopper

1 Insert one of the claws into the groove as shown in the figure.Paper Handling

2

2 Insert the other claw into the notch in the groove.

3 Slide the stopper towards the outer side as far as possible to lock.

2-7

n Loading Paper in the Stack BypassUse the stack bypass when you want to print on special paper, such as envelopes, transparencies, labels or heavy paper. You canplace up to 100 sheets of 80 g/m2 paper stack (a stack approximately 10 mm high) in the stack bypass.

1 Open the stack bypass.

2 Pull out the paper tray.

3 Load the paper stack facing up into the stack bypass.

4 Adjust the slide guides to fit the size of the paper stack. If the slide guides are not adjusted correctly for the paper size, the quality of your printimages may be adversely affected. When making copies on A4 size paper after having continuously copied on papersmaller than A4 size paper, the copies may be dirty. To prevent copies from being dirty, wait about one minute before making copies. Insert the paper stack into the machine as far as it will go. If the paper is curled, uncurl it before placing it in the stack bypass. Failure to do so willcause paper creases and a paper jam. 56 to 128 g/m 2 paper is acceptable. Make sure that the paper stack does not exceed the paper limit guide. Some types of paper may not feed properly into the stack bypass. For high-qualitycopies, be sure to use the paper and transparencies recommended by Canon. ( p. 2-1) Load transparencies one by one. When making copies of a small size document or heavy paper, etc., the copy speed maybe slightly slower than usual. To specify the paper size every time you load the paper into the stack bypass, follow theprocedure below. From the ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS, select STACK BYPASS SIZE from COMMONSETTINGS and set to OFF, then set to SET ON LOADING. Select the paper size usingO (s) or P (r), and press OK.OKFor details, refer to Selecting the Paper Feeding Location (Paper Drawer or StackBypass). ( p. 4-2)

2-8

Paper limitguide

2n Loading Envelopes in the Stack Bypass The recommended envelopes are US COMMERCIAL 10, MONARCH, EUROPEAN DL, ISO-B5, ISO-C5, YOGATA #4 orYOGATA #2 envelopes. Using other envelopes may affect the quality of the copy image.

1 Arrange the stack of envelopes on a firm, clean surface, and press down firmlyon the edges to make the folds crisp. Press all the way around the envelopes to remove any curls and expel air from insidethe envelopes. Also, press firmly on the area that corresponds to the edges of the backflap.

Paper Handling

22 Remove any curling from the envelopes by holding the edges diagonally andbending them gently.

3 Run a pen or other rounded object along the back flaps to flatten them.Flap

The flaps should not bulge more than 5 mm.

4 Position the stack of envelopes into the stack bypass a, and adjust the slideguides to fit the size of the envelope b. Position the envelopes with the print side up (flaps should not be visible) and load theenvelope so that the right edge (stamp side) feeds first in the stack bypass. If the envelope to be loaded has a flap on the short edge, this edge must enter themachine first. Not loading it this way will result in paper jams. Make sure the stack does not exceed the paper limit guide. The machine is now ready to print.

21

The orientation of a document and the loading position of the envelope are reversed. To select the type of envelope loaded in the stack bypass, follow the procedure below. From the ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS, select STACK BYPASS SIZE from COMMONSETTINGS and set to OFF, then set to SET ON LOADING. Position the stack ofenvelopes into the stack bypass. Use O (s) or P (r), or to select ENVELOPE and pressOK.OK Then, select the type of envelope (US COMMERCIAL 10, MONARCH,EUROPEAN DL, ISO-B5, ISO-C5, YOGATA Z4 or YOGATA Z2) and pressOK.OK

Chapter 5MaintenancePeriodic CleaningYour machine requires little periodic maintenance. This section describes the necessary cleaning procedures for your machine. When cleaning the machines exterior or the platen glass, be sure to disconnect the power cord before cleaning the machine. For the model with the fax function, print any received faxes stored in memory before disconnecting the power cord, sincedocuments in memory are backed up only for about 2 hours when the power cord is disconnected. (RR Fax Guide) Do not use tissue paper, paper towels, or similar materials for cleaning; they can stick to the components or generate staticcharges. Use a soft cloth to avoid scratching the components. Never use volatile liquids such as thinner, benzene, acetone, or any other chemical cleaner to clean the interior of the machine;these can damage the machines components.
