IRIS project(Integrated Reconfigurable silicon photonics based optical Switch)
Lessons learned from experience

History teachs …
• Our story began in 2011. The first proposal was SIRIO
• Evaluation result: Not funded
• … so our story begins with a failure !!!
WHY ?
2
SIRIO Evaluation part 1
SIRIO Evaluation part 2
SIRIO Evaluation part 3
Our Mistake was…
• Our mistake was to under-estimate the project management …
• Which is the most “standard” area,
• and also the most “discretional” area….
Lessons learned…• The first lesson learned was:
take care of the project management
• The second lesson was:
… if at first you don’t succeed, try, try try again…
So we set up a new proposal “IRIS” in 2012 and the evaluation results were…
IRIS Evaluation part 1-2
IRIS Evaluation part 3
Lessons learned !! …• IRIS was approved at the end of 2013 (2014-2016)
• During the last year, the third year of the project, we got an extension of 12 months until the end of 2017
• This is not so common…
With an interesting follow up…
• In 2014 we set up other 3 projects
• Teraboard
• Cosmicc
• Streams
…..All funded in 2015…!!!

Using a new technology: Si Photonics
Power needed/Ring :21 nm / (3 nm/10 mW) = 70 mW
A possible implementation of the switch element
Ring resonator with Ti/TiN heater above, and resonance peak wavelength temperature dependence
European leadership: IRIS is beyond the State of the Art
Exploitation: the Roadmap of HW
Do what you promised5.7 m

1390 Optical Functions per chip
~ 150 O.F./mmq
IRIS target was 1100Optical Functions per chip
The prototype has 1390Optical Functions per chip
But we did more: our integration in terms of O.F./mmq is the best reported today
It is:~ 150 O.F./mmq in the ring area and 85 O.F./mmq in the core area showed
Conclusion: my suggestions
• Find the real frontiers/barriers of a field and choose one or more of them
• Propose one/more breakthrough solutions
• Explain clearly how to implement it/them and how to bypass the associated risks
• Find one good partner per every activity requested by the project
• Pay attention to the project management
• Describe the impact on your business and your exploitation
