His US visit had an extraordinaryimpact on him. He was veryimpressed and influenced by theAmerican “can do” attitude, andwhen he heard reports from Africa offamine in Biafra in 1968, it was, as hesays himself, his ‘Californiaconfidence’ that lead him to foundthe charity ‘CONCERN. Currently surrounded by thestunning autumn colours of HudsonRiver Valley woods in Upstate NewYork, Cliona has had a busy fewmonths since stepping down fromthe IFAA Executive Committee inMay. After two very enjoyable yearson the Committee, first as anordinary member and later asNewsletter Editor, that coincidedwith the fiftieth anniversarycelebrations of Fulbright in Ireland, she accepted a two-year visitingposition in Mathematics at BardCollege, which is a liberal artscollege about a two-hour drive northof New York City. Over thesummer, in addition to packing upand getting ready to travel to the US,she and her fiance (who met whileCliona was on her Fulbrightexchange) celebrated their marriageat a leafy location in Co. Meath. Itwas a thoroughly enjoyable day, andeveryone involved is still thankingthe weather gods for some incrediblegood fortune: it stopped rainingdirectly before the outdoor ceremonyand started showering again onlyafter all guests were seated insidethat evening for dinner!

Cliona’s position at Bard started in

September, and she has since beenenjoying teaching a group ofmotivated students within acommunity of interesting and wide-ranging faculty in an idyllic campussetting beside the scenic HudsonRiver. She has also been takingadvantage of the flourishing culturallife in the area, including attendingconcerts at the Fisher Center for thePerforming Arts on campus, regularrecitals by members of the BardConservatory of Music, and, ofcourse, the myriad of events atvenues in nearby New York City.

One of the bittersweet benefits ofthe Fulbright exchange is growingused to living both in your homecountry and in the US. While livingin Ireland after her Fulbrightexchange, Cliona missed aspects oflife in the US. Now, happy to beback in the US, she misses family, friends, and life in Ireland. However, flying between New Yorkis so manageable, and internetphonecalls so affordable, that it’sreally possible to enjoy both and, while in New York, she’s beenenjoying being on the mailing list ofthe IFAA where she hears news ofIFAA events back home in Ireland.

This year saw John Hurley leavethe committee after ten years ofactive involvement. Following hisFulbright at Stanford Universityin 1994, where his researchrevolved around 16 Nobellaureates in science, John becameinvolved with the Association, joining the committee in 1998 andserving in the roles of Vice-President (2001-03) and President(2003-05). John has remained anactive member of the committee and, with John O’Loughlin-Kennedy, completed the JubileeDirectory, a project he initiatedduring his time as President. He also took the initiative to organisethe Jubilee Symposium with hissub-committee, in November2007. During John’s tenure asPresident he sought to encourageyounger members to becomeinvolved in the work of the

committee, in the processfacilitating the rejuvenation ofthe committee and allowing foraccumulated committee ‘know-how’ to be passed on. It was in the context of his service to theIFAA that John was awarded the Association’s medal at the 10th Annual Fulbright Scholar’sDinner in June 2006.

This year also saw the departurefrom the Committee of WillieReville, former IFAA Presidentand outstanding contributor to the work of IFAA over manyyears. There is no danger thatWillie will be left with time on hishands however, as he continues to have multiple responsibilities atUCC, and is already wellestablished as Ireland’s foremostscience writer through his weekly“Science Today” column in theIrish Times.

STEP DOWN FROM IFAA COMMITTEE

FULBRIGHT GROUP VISITS NATIONAL CONCERT HALL

Newcomers to the IFAACommittee 2008/2009

It was a great pleasure to see fiveenergetic members steppingforward to join the IFAACommittee this year. They are:

Professor Patrick Clancy of UCD(Fulbright New Century Scholar2005)

Mr David Fennelly (New YorkUniversity, 2004)

Dr Paul Quigley, of AIB Bank(University of Illinois, 1996)

Dr Sarah Ingle, of DCU’s BusinessSchool (Arizona State University,2006)

Niamh Dunne, (New YorkUniversity, 2006).

There can be no doubt that theirimpact on IFAA affairs will beconsiderable.

This year’s AGM was held at AmericanCollege Dublin (1 Merrion Square,Dublin) with kind permission of theCollege President on Wednesday May14th, 2008. 15 members attended. Thework of the outgoing committee wasfavourably reviewed. Threeoutstanding members of the Committee

stood down – John Hurley, WillieReville and Cliona Golden. ThePresident warmly thanked them all fortheir major contributions during thepreceding years. A new Committee waselected (see page 5) and started theyear re-juvenated by the addition offive new members (see left).

In what is now a traditional Autumnevent, a group of about 30 FulbrightFellows and friends visited theNational Concert Hall on FridayOctober 31st to enjoy an evening ofmusic with the RTE NationalSymphony Orchestra. This year’souting was ably organised by SéamusÓ Cinnéide of the IFAA Committee. The group included several visitingAmerican Fulbright Fellows and afterthe concert everyone retired to thenearby Conrad Hotel where a“Comhluadar” session of animatedconversation and socialising continuedfor some considerable time. This year’s

visit to the NCH was extra specialbecause IFAA President Thérèse Fahywas the soloist in the performance ofthe piano concerto “Réveil desOiseaux” by French composerMessiaen. Thérèse and the orchestraprovided magical moments of musical“bird song” for the audience, culminating in the spectacular “dawnchorus”, which lingered in our mindslong after the concert finished.

Further “Comhluadar” social gatherings ofFulbrighters and friends will take placeregularly during 2009. Dates to beannounced.

IFAA ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2008

COMMEMORATING

ANNE LEAHYEarly October 08 saw a concert takeplace in Dublin’s Pro-Cathedral to markthe first anniversary of the passing of ourdear friend and fellow Fulbrighter, AnneLeahy. Featuring Bach’s Mass in BMinor, the evening saw the Dublin BachSingers, the Orchestra of Saint Cecilia, conductor Blánaid Murphy and soloists(Colette Boushell, Anna-Louise Costello,Victoria Massey, Duncan Brickenden,Andrew Boushell and John-Owen Miley-Read) give of their time both toremember Anne and to raise funds for the Anne Leahy Scholarship Fund.Indeed, such was the response that a full cathedral meant some of the proceedsalso made their way to Saint FrancisHospice, Raheny, where Anne spent her last days. The evening reflected “the esteem and affection which Anne still draws,” said the ‘appreciation’ in the concert programme. “We celebrateAnne’s life and enthusiasm…and we can best commemorate her by emulatingher boundless generosity and enthusiasmin the promotion of all aspects of art andmusic.”
