Fifteen years ago, O’Brien compiled Volume One of the Paddy O’Brien Tune Collection, an amazing collection of 400 reels and 100 jigs from his vast repertoire. Now the Paddy O’Brien Tune Collection—Volume Two is on the way. This second volume comprises yet another 500 tunes—100 reels, 150 double jigs, 30 slip jigs, 100 polkas, and 120 hornpipes. Not since Captain Francis O'Neill compiled The Music of Ireland in 1903 has a collection of this size and scope been made available to the general public. The tunes in this collection include O’Brien’s own particular interpretation of well-known melodies, as well as many rare tunes and settings that have never before been recorded. What also sets the Paddy O’Brien Tune Collection apart from any previous efforts is the fact that it is created for players, like Paddy himself, who learn music in the traditional manner—by ear. This collection is also set apart by the written materials which accompany the tunes. Paddy O'Brien's phenomenal memory extends not only to notes and variations, but to titles, and to the history that accompanies the tunes—when he received them and from whom; when and by whom they were composed or first introduced into the popular tradition. Keeping the learner in mind, the written notes on the music also include suggested keys, information on techniques used, and some basic ideas on how the tunes are arranged into selections. These considerations are as much a part of the tradition as the tunes themselves, and gives the learner a depth of knowledge about Irish music and culture not available from commercial recordings. Paddy O’Brien has been at work on this second volume of his colossal collection for five years. The tunes have been recorded, mixed, and mastered; the companion booklet has been written and formatted. To help cover production costs, O’Brien has enlisted help from Kickstarter.com, a website that helps creative people find investors for their latest projects. Those interested in making a contribution to the historic preservation and perpetuation of Irish traditional music can read more about the project here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/paddyobrien/paddy-obrien-tune-collection-volume-two Money raised through Kickstarter.com will go toward production costs for the Paddy O'Brien Tune Collection Project—Volume Two, (13 CDs presented in a zippered leather wallet, plus a booklet containing background notes and information on each tune). A fundraising goal of $5,985 was established and made public through Kickstarter.com on August 27, 2010; so far 12 backers have invested $1,785 towards the goal. Investors who contribute $25 or more will receive a Paddy O’Brien Tune Collection t-shirt. 28th Year, Issue No. 11

November 2010 Samhain

Paddy O'Brien, the All-Ireland accordion champion renowned as one of the most powerful and passionate players of Irish traditional music today, is preparing to release a second

volume of his historic recording project, the Paddy O’Brien Tune Collection.

Fifteen years ago, O’Brien compiled Volume One of the Paddy O’Brien Tune Collection, an amazing collection of 400 reels and 100 jigs from his vast repertoire. Now the Paddy

O’Brien Tune Collection—Volume Two is on the way.

Those interested in making a contribution to the historic preservation and perpetuation of Irish traditional music can read more about the project here:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/paddyobrien/paddy-obrien-tune-collection-volume-two

Money raised through Kickstarter.com will go toward production costs for the Paddy O'Brien Tune Collection

Project—Volume Two, (13 CDs presented in a zippered leather wallet, plus a booklet containing background notes and information on each tune).

A fundraising goal of $5,985 was established and made public through Kickstarter.com on August 27, 2010; so far 12 backers have invested $1,785 towards the goal. Investors who contribute $25 or more will receive a Paddy O’Brien

Tune Collection t-shirt. Those who invest $170 or more will receive a signed copy of the Paddy O’Brien Tune

Collection—Volume Two, and the Tune Collection t-shirt as well. All investors will receive acknowledgment in the tune collection booklet.

The Kickstarter.com fundraising deadline: SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 27.

Volume Two of the Paddy O’Brien Tune Collection is expected to go on sale to the general public sometime in early 2011; Volume One is still available from http://www.paddyobrien.net/tune-collection/order/

The Paddy O'Brien Tune Collection Project has been supported in part by grants from the Bush Foundation Artist

Fellowship Program, the Minnesota State Arts Board, and the Irish Fair of Minnesota Legacy Fund.

The mission of the Irish Music and Dance Association is to support, coordinate, encourage and promote high quality activities and programs

in Irish music, dance, and other cultural traditions within the community and to insure the continuation of those traditions.

Since the IMDA honored Paddy O’Brien last month, it seems fitting to share another of his vast store of tunes in this column. Here is a jig as played by Paddy some time ago at his former home in Minneapolis. He also recorded this tune in The Paddy O’Brien Tune Collection, in which he mentions that he first heard it from accordion player Jimmy Sullivan of Templemore, Co. Tipperary. The title commemorates the Duke of Wellington, the hero of the Battle of Waterloo. According to Francis O’Neill, who included this tune in The

Dance Music of Ireland, this is an Ulster tune. Usual disclaimers: Any transcription errors are my own. The notation here is not meant to be a substitute for listening. It is simply an aid to learning the tune.

We were pleased to have a visit recently, in our Monday evening Irish language classes, from a cainteoir dúchais, that is, a native speaker of the language. Our guest, Shane, is here helping out with Irish language classes at St. Thomas. He hails from Gleann Cholm Cille in Donegal, home of the famous language school at Oideas Gael, and he learned Irish before he learned English. So that makes him a cainteoir

dúchais: cainteoir from caint, "talk," and dúchais being a form of dúchas, "heritage or heredity." Dúchas refers to everything from a hereditary birthright, to the place you came from, to your most basic nature. When you return to your dúchas (filleadh ar do dhúchas), you could be literally returning to your ancestral home, where you began and where you belong. Or you could be reverting to your basic character, getting back into your old habits. When there is a family tendency toward a talent or a profession, dúchas may be invoked. Tá an ceol inti ó

dhúchas, we say, "the music is in her by nature," that is, she is naturally gifted as a musician, perhaps like others in her family. Or we say, tá dúchas le mairnéalacht

aige, a "hereditary bent for seafaring": the sea is in his blood, in other words. Of course, not everyone is true to his or her heritage. Thréig sé a thír agus a dhúchas, "he forsook his country and his heritage," he turned his back on his origins. By contrast, when we point out someone who did not abandon his or her heritage -- níor thréig sí a dúchas -- we are just saying those individuals are very like their families, they are just what you might expect if you knew their people. Dúchas is used in the sense of "congenital", such as ball

dúchais for a birthmark, a "congenital mark or spot." And a galar dúchais, a sickness, is simply an inherited disease.

Dúchas is used with animals to refer to their fundamental nature, their character. Of course, animal nature is not always a good thing. While a cainteoir dúchais, a "native speaker," is a delight, a madra dúchais, a "native dog," is not. Rather it is a dog that has reverted to its wild, undomesticated nature, and the phrase is commonly used to refer to a mad dog. Heredity is heredity, for good or ill.

If you have been looking for a way to help your children learn Irish, you'll want to get in touch with Tom Jeffers, who preceded Shane as the TA at St. Thomas for a couple of years. Tom is now teaching Irish for children at Celtic Junction, so visit

their web site and look at the "classes" section for more information. While Gaeltacht Minnesota has had young students from time to time, we frankly are not much help when the kids are not yet teenagers. Tom is not only a brilliantly fluent speaker, he is an experienced teacher and a charming lad. If you'd like to give the younger members of your family a taste of their teanga dhúchais, their ancestral language, get in touch with Tom through Celtic Junction. We welcome our new students who have just completed the Community Education "Intro" class, and are now joining our regular Monday classes. If you did not get into that class, keep an eye on our web site at www.gaelminn.org, as we will be working on our schedule of workshop events to open the way for our next batch of new beginners. Or stay abreast of our activities and of regional events by signing up for our free e-zine, The GaelMinn Gazette, at the web site. You'll also get tips (in English) for studying the language more efficiently, delivered to your e-mailbox on the 25th of each month. Thug sé ó dhúchas é mar a thug an mhuc an rútáil.

He got that (vice) by heritage, i.e., from his family history, as the pig got rooting. Will

The bright, ringing sound of metal strings distinguish the ancient Irish harp from

its other string relatives. Using historical techniques on a period replica,

Ann and Charlie Heymann will perform the repertoire of Patrick Byrne --

an Irish harper whose death in the mid-19th century brought a thousand-year-old

tradition to a close.

Byrne's younger brother, Christopher, emigrated and settled in Faribault;

Liam O'Neill of "Irish On Grand" will narrate and read excerpts of

a letter between the brothers.

Tickets $18 per person; $16 for MHS members. Reservations recommended, call 651-297-2555

Venetia Kelly's Traveling Show by Frank Delaney; hardcover(2010), published by Random House

Mix together the volatile Irish politics of 1932 (a key national election and several regional ones), a traveling theatre show offering the rurals a mix of vaudeville, Shakespeare, low comedy and a frighteningly perceptive dummy named Barney (the truth-telling fool), and a love triangle of Greek mythological proportions, and you have a fair idea what Frank Delaney has concocted in his newest novel. Irish politics, of course, are theater, and always have been; and in turn, Irish theater has always had a topical axe or two to grind. The juxtaposition of these themes plays out brilliantly in this novel. However, the most compelling drama in this tale is what happens to families torn between love and duty, whether landholders or actors. When a middle-aged farmer and his son both fall for the fascinating and irresistible traveling show actress Venetia Kelly, lives and families are uprooted and changed forever, and both local and national politics take an unexpected and dramatic turn. Frank Delaney weaves historical fact and real people (Eamon deValera and Yeats each take a star turn, along with others) in a tale that resembles Homer, which the literature-loving Irish of the time knew well. It was not unusual for audiences to chant along with the Shakespeare passages, which had been passed down to the rural folk along with the old tales by the shanachies. The colorful and often violent world of back-room politics and behind-the-scenes machinations in Irish politics would do any American gangster story proud; the backstage intrigues, affairs and turbulence of the theatre folk keep this novel moving energetically and lyrically. Frank Delaney is a master storyteller of this tumultuous, eventful time in Irish history,

and you will find yourself unwilling to put this story aside for anything else until you reach the end. It's a big, sweeping, roisterous ride of a novel, and although it runs past 400 pages, you'll be turning pages so fast you won't even notice its length until you're finished. Sit back in your seat, turn down the lights, and take in the show; this one is worth your time and your dime. Sherry Ladig, frequent contributor to this column, is a Saint Paul trad musician, and was a

writer for the former Hungry Mind Bookstore's newsletter, Fodder.
