The Block
A big thank you to all the students, parents and staff who participated in the long planned and highly awaited “The Block” Irrawang style. The Block was inspired by the student leaders and thanks to staff, particularly Mrs Connor, the renovations have had a huge impact to the start of the term. School Uniform
With the weather becoming cooler the uniform starts to become harder when students are unprepared or make poor choices and do not wear the correct uniform. Please ensure your child has a plain black top with no hood or logo. It can be the school jumper from Lowes or a plain sweater/sloppy joe available from a number of retailers. No hoodies are allowed. Our students are the best ambassadors for selling our school in the community and unfortunately, some people only see uniform so please make sure they make a good impression. ANZAC March 2017
The school extends a big thank you to all the families who arranged for their children to join us for this year’s ANZAC Day March and service. We had our famous senior drum corps lead
Welcome Back!
Welcome back to Term 2. I hope everyone enjoyed a safe and healthy holiday and are ready to launch into another 10 weeks of school. We start this term with Year 12 getting their results back from the examinations they did at the end of last term. In Week 3 we have Year 7 and Year 9 doing NAPLAN testing. Many sporting teams participating in knockouts, extra curricular activities in all KLA’s planned for the term, our creative and performing arts team in full swing for upcoming performances in Star Struck and Showcase; this just lists a few things happening at Irrawang as we focus on learning each and every day. Another busy term.

PBL signs By Mrs L Fagan Community Liaison Officer Our PBL team have designed bright new signs around the school with more on the way.
Community PBL By Mrs L Fagan Community Liaison Officer
Congrats to Tyess Cook on representing our school as the first Community PBL winner this term. Thank you MarketPlace Raymond Terrace for your ongoing support of all the Raymond Terrace schools.
Congratulations Tyess! PBL Signs
Community PBL By Mrs L Fagan Community Liaison Officer Raymond Terrace Community Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) hit the streets of Raymond Terrace recently to conduct a survey with businesses and members of the wider community. Student representatives from each of the five Terrace schools asked questions regarding behaviour displayed by students in the local community. PBL teaches behavioural expectations as part of a social learning curriculum across the whole school. On the whole the responses were positive however, we are still learning.
PBL The Tempest Excursion
The Tempest By Miss S Hughes English Faculty
On Wednesday 3 May, Years 11 and 12 Advanced English students went to see a production of William Shakespeare's 'The Tempest,' at the Riverside Theatre, Parramatta. Year 12 have studied the play in class as the set text for Area of Study, 'Discovery.’ Year 11
Advanced English students will study the play in Term 4 this year. The play was well received by the students and combined the traditional script with some modern elements including contemporary music and altered gender roles in some characters. Student behaviour and engagement was exemplary and teachers attending were Miss S Hughes and Mrs Tracey Wallace (Head Teacher English).
ANZAC Day Service
ANZAC Day service By Mrs L Fagan Community Liaison Officer Our senior SRC students organised and conducted a wonderful ANZAC Day service at school on Friday 7 April. Special guests included Mr Handley from Legacy and the RSL, Sgt O’Brien from 77 Squadron, Mr Walker from the RSL, Capt Jones President of the Raymond Terrace RSL sub-branch, and several ADF parents. Year 12 student Brayden Milford also participated as a member of 335 Squadron, Australian Air Force Cadets. Music teacher Mr Massey played the Last Post whilst junior drummers Jack Lawrence and Jaidon Warwick played as a sign of respect as the wreath was laid. The service was followed by a morning tea held for the dignitaries and the SRC students who participated in the service. Big thank you to our SRC members: Lincoln, Nikita, Georgia, Bob, Rebecca, Kyah, the flag bearers and those who met the dignitaries and escorted them to the service. Also thank you to our Defence Force Mentor, Mrs Glenda de Wit. Our students are to be commended on their perfect behaviour, noticed and duly commented on by our guests.
ANZAC Day ceremonies By Mrs L Fagan Community Liaison Officer
A very large crowd on a beautiful morning watched our Year 12 Drum Corps members again lead the ANZAC Day March at the moving Medowie Dawn Service. Proud of our students who again represented our school so well (excuse the poor quality of the photos).
School Captains Annabel Bisley and Lincoln Hunter along with Vice-Captain Dylan Hopper participated in the 11:00am ANZAC Day service at Raymond Terrace with many students and staff also in attendance. Annabel had a long day representing our school with pride at both local services, with all students displaying our PBL values of Respect, Responsibility and Personal Best.

Debating teams gain valuable experience By Mrs L Fagan Community Liaison Officer Our Junior and Senior debaters had a day long workshop recently honing their skills and gaining valuable experience in preparation for several debates with other schools. A mock debate on whether "politicians should be allowed to use social media" was most enjoyable. The affirmative team (seniors) won! Keep up the good work and good luck in the upcoming debates!
Debating
Senior debating By Mrs L Fagan Community Liaison Officer It was a difficult but interesting debate on Monday 8 May between our Senior Debating Team and MGHS. The topic, “we should prohibit the reporting of terrorist activity as they unfold” kept the speakers challenged however, we congratulate MGHS as the affirmative team on winning the debate. Look forward to meeting with HRHS next week.

Soldier Of War By Ryan Johnson
In 1968 his name was called to a war in Vietnam, He was 20 years young with a future unknown, They sent him and his generation to a world unknown. Would they return to a world they knew? To loved ones left behind: brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, children and wives
In the fields of war they were handed their guns and told to fight, It was here he was named a soldier of war. As the sun rose and darkness fell each day, Friendships were made and friendships lost.
He came home to loved ones when the war was over, A soldier with memories he will never share and feelings he will never understand. Each year at ANZAC this soldier of war meets his mates and marches a march, A march to remember the fallen but never forgotten.
A bond for life is a soldier of war . . . A soldier of Vietnam, Proud of his actions like we are today
A soldier of war in my family is known as my pop.
The Ridge By Jye Cox
Up the ridge we go, Griping on tight Strength weakening, like snow Heads held up high.
We follow orders as we must “Fire at the enemy” While wiping away the dust
Blood running down. Minutes past Nothing made a sound One man down. Guns fired Bodies lay around
Retreat, retreat Down the ridge we go 300 came down While men on the ridge, Scream loud . . . “Help, help!”

Completion of all six elements of this course will allow students to gain the qualification of FNS10110 Certificate I in Financial Services. This Course shows how to:
Set financial goals
Create a budget
Look at needs vs wants
Develop a savings plan
Recognise scams
Better understand credit, debt and debt traps
Find assistance if you are in too much debt
Understand taxation
Understand the basics about superannuation
Understand the role of regulators such as the ACCC and ASIC and how they can help you.
A very beneficial program!
Financial Literacy Congratulations Ms Hines!
Ms Hines has been donating mostly plasma but at times whole blood every two weeks for many years. The procedure only takes about six minutes for whole blood and 36 minutes for Plasma, so all up about an hour including an interview at the beginning and refreshments at the end.
One in three Australians will need blood in their lifetime - but only 1 in 30 donates. The blood you donate can be made into 22 different medical treatments with over 30%
of blood donations used to help treat patients with cancer.
Ms Hines motto is “I get paid every fortnight and I can pay the world every fortnight.” “It is so easy to donate and I urge everyone who is able to donate, to ring and make an appointment,” she said.
The mobile blood bus will be next in Raymond Terrace on Tuesday 13 and Wed 14 June.
For more information please contact 131495 or visit:

Tocal field day - Please see photos next page By Mrs L Fagan Community Liaison Officer
A full bus of happy students and teachers headed up to the annual Tocal Field Day on Friday 5 May - a much anticipated event on our school calendar.
Agriculture students, those in the Ag Show Team and students from the Support Classes enjoyed a day of observing new technologies in the agriculture industry, new and traditional breeds of livestock and learning about any new products on the market.
There were also opportunities to look at tertiary education and careers in the Agriculture industry.
Snails were also on the lunch menu – any takers?
Year 9 WWI history By Mrs L Fagan Community Liaison Officer Shane Blackman from WW1 Living History delivered a very informative and interactive presentation to Year 9 History students

Does your child need an extra hand with
English or Maths?
Sometimes children fall behind at school. They may have moved from another state, changed classes, or something else has happened in their life beyond your control. For whatever reason they then begin to struggle with their work at school, with their homework and with their exams. This can be frustrating for both them and
you as a parent.
Kip McGrath specialises in helping children catch up to where they need to be in English and Maths. The resources we use are specifically designed to do this job. And the reason we only use qualified teachers, is that they have the tools and skills to accelerate your child’s learning, so that any gaps are closed as quickly
as possible.
We complement what is done at school to help your child. Your school gives your child an essential foundation in education across a wide range of subjects and developmental activities. Our job is to give your child an extra hand when they need to catch up … for whatever reason. So together we can help your child
reach their full potential.
If your child is experiencing these frustrations and they need an extra hand in English or Maths, then call Christine to see how we can help.
