Indian Standard GUIDELINES FOR

TRANSPORTATION OF DEAD BODY AND CREMATED REMAINS OF HUMAN BEINGS

0. FOREWORD

0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution on 30 June 1982, after the draft finalized by the Air Cargo Handling Sectional Committee had been approved by the Marine, Cargo Move- ment and Packaging Division Council.

0.2 In preparation of this standard provisions of Aircraft ( Public Health ) Rules 1954 have also been taken into consideration.

1. SCOPE

1.1 This standard lays down guidelines for transportation of dead body and cremated remains of human beings by air.

2. REQUIREMENTS

2.0 General - Dead body or human remains of persons who may have died of yellow fever, plague, anthra-glanders or other diseases as specified by the Indian Government from time to time shall not be carried except for properly cremated ashes.

2.1 Treatment of Dead Body - Dead body shall be embalmed and the embalming shall be guaranteed for six months.

2.2 Containment of Dead Body - It shall be contained in an inner coflin which shall subsequently be put in an outer coffin. The inner coffin if intact and free from any offensive odour may be enclosed as such in the outer coffin. But if not free from odour its contents shall be sealed in a hermetically sealed inner coffin made of lead or zinc. The outer coffin shall be stout and shall be made of any hard wood lined with zinc or tin and filled with saw dust impregnated with carbolic powder.

2.3 Handling - Carriage of dead body in coffins on passenger and cargo aircraft shall be subject to the following conditions:

a) Dead body coffin shall not be loaded in the same hold as dogs and other sensitive animals. Nor shall it be loaded in the same hold as food for human consumption unless such food is packed hermetically; and

b) The pilot in command shall be informed of carriage of dead body.

2.4 Cremated Remains - Cremated remains shall be transported in urns which are efficiently cushioned against breakage by suitable packing.

2.4.1 The handing and loading of urns shall be as normal cargo.

2.5 Certificate - The body shall be accompained with a certificate issued by the Government authority and endorsed by the concerned diplomatic representative, in case foreigners.

2.6 Advance Intimation - The consignee as well as air transport service shall inform to the Health Officer of the Airport of arrival an advance intimation of at least 24 hours of the importation of the dead body or human remains.
