FOREWORD

This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized by the Milling Cutters, Saws, Gear Cutting Tools and Broaches Sectional Committee had been approved by the Production Engineering Division Council.

This standard has been prepared on the basis of experience gained at national level and development at international !evel.

SERRATION HOBS - STRAIGHT SIDED -- SPECIFICATION

1 SCOPE

This standard covers the dimensions and requirements for straight sided serration hobs, suitable for serrations according to IS 3654:1966 ‘Dimensions for straight sided serrations’.

2 REFERENCES

The following Indian Standards contain provisions which through reference in this text, constitute provision of this standard. At the time of publication, the editions indicated were valid. All standards are subject to revision, and parties to agreements based on this standard are encouraged to investigate the ~possibility of applying the most recent editions of the standards indicated below:

3 DIMENSIONS

The dimensions of straight sided serration hobs are given in Table 1.

4 ACCURACY

The accuracy for straight sided serration hobs shall be as given in IS 8733.

5 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

5.1 For other requirements not covered in this standard, IS 14584 shall apply.

5.2 Gashing may be done preferably in perpendicular direction and in opposite helix of hob thread, when setting angle for hobbing (lead angle of thread) is more than 3 degrees. This gashing may also be parallel to hob axis and marked with symbol (infinity) for the gash lead and setting angle for sharpening is zero degree.

5.3 It is recommended to follow basic profile II for the serrations of size from 7 mm X 8 mm to 30 mm X 34 mm according to IS 3654 to simplify the manufacturing of such serration hobs.

6 DESIGNATION

A straight sided serration hob with right hand thread to cut serrations of size 45 mm x 50 mm according to IS 3654 with basic profile I and grade of accuracy ‘A’, made of high speed steel and confirming to this str;&rd shall be designated as:

NOTE-The dimensions of hub diameter ‘dl’ are left to the manufacturer’s discretion. This diameter shall be as large as possible and greater than the spacing ring. Hub diameter may be conical or cylindrical.
