FOREWORD
This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized by the Silk and SilkProducts Sectional Committee had been approved by the Textile Division Council.
The quality of Tassar silk fabric depends to a large extent on the quality ofyam from which it is manufactured. Thetassar silk yam quality is dependent on total winding breaks, C.Y of size, maximum deviation, C.Y of twist, cohesion, tenacity, elongation and cleanness which are the parameters used for its grading. This standard specifiesfour grades as I, II, 111 and IV. Grade I is the highest and Grade IV is ofthe lowest in order ofmerit.
,
The composition of the Committee responsible for the formulation of this standard is given in Annex B.
For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated expressing the result ofa test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS 2 : 1960'Rules for rounding off numerical values (rev ised)'. The number of significant places retained in the rounded offvalue should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

5 EXAMINATION AND TESTS
3.2 Tassar Reeling cum Twisting Machine ReeledYarn - Yarn reeled on the reeling cum twistingmachine from tassar cocoon filaments with low twistofabout 350 TPM .
3.3 Hank - Silk reeled and removed from a reel ingmachine in the form of an open band. It shall be onecont inuous thread made by tying all breaks withgood, clean knots, with the loose ends cut not morethan 3 mm long. The outside end of the thread shallbe tied round the hank in such a manner as to beeasil y found . The hank shall be laced at place s equallyspaced with a fine soft twisted cotton or spun silkyarn passed through at least two diamonds in thewidth of the hank, tied such that the knot is aboutI cm from the edge of the hank and the loose end sought not to exceed I cm from the knot.
The tassar silk shall have Grades I, II , III and IV.Grade I is the highest and Grade IV is of the lowest inorder of meri t.
4 GRADES
5.1 Unit of Grading
5.1.1 The examination and tests shall be conductedon the lot of tassar raw silk offered for grading. Thelot shall not be less than 10 kg and not more than20 kg . In case the lot size is more than 20 kg, the lotshall be divided in two or more lots of 10 to 20 kg .
5.2 Examination and Tests
5.2.1 Each lot shall be examined visually andtactually according to the method prescribed inIS 15090 (Part 2).
5.2.2 Each lot shall be e valuated for thecharacteristics listed in Table I .
