SPECIFICATION

(First

Standard

FOR WHEAT BRAN

Revision)

0. FOREWORD

0.1 This Indian Standard ( First Revision) was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution on 17 September 1971, after the draft finalized by the Animal Feeds Sectional Committee had been approved by the Agricultural and Food Products Division Council.

0.2 This Indian Standard was first issued in 1962. However, in view of the introduction of the newer varieties of wheat for cultivation in the country it had become necessary to review the provisions stipulated in the existing Indian Standard for the various characteristics of wheat bran. In this revision the characteristics for crude fat, total ash and husk for foreign foodgrains have been removed. The limits for the crude protein and crude fibre have been amended. It is expected that this revision would help the feed manufacturing organizations and others in procuring wheat bran of the right quality.

0.3 This standard contains clause 3.1 which calls for an agreement be- tween the purchaser and the vendor.

0.4 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, express- ing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS : 2-1960*. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

1. SCOPE

1.1 This standard prescribes*the requirements and the methods of test for wheat bran for use as livestock feed.

2. REQUIREMENTS

2.1 Description-Wheat bran shall be the outer coating with the minimum of adhering endosperm of the wheat kernel, separated from effectively cleaned wheat in the usual process of milling. The material

shall be free from musty and stale odour or sourness and from lumps, dirt and extraneous matter including iron or other metallic pieces. It shall be free from fungus or insect infestation.

2.2 The material shall not contain more than 30 percent by weight of fine powder as determined by sieving 50 g of the material on 500-micron IS Sieve (aperture O-500 mm) for 2 minutes, weighing the powder passing through the sieve and calculating as percentage of the material.

NOTE - If 5Wmicron IS Sieve (em IS : 460-1962’ ) is not available, BS Tat Sieve 30 or Tyler Test Sieve 32 or ASA Test Sieve 35 ( same as ASTM ) may be used.

2.zbEh; material shall also conform to the requirements prescribed in .

3.2 Marking - Each bag shall be marked with the following information:

3.2.1 The bag may also be marked with the IS1 Certification Mark.

NOTE - The use of the Standard Mark is goverried by the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 and the Rules and Regulations made there- under. The Standard Mark on products covered by an Indian Standard conveys the assurance that they have been produced to comply with the requirements of that standard under a well defined system of inspection, testing and quality control which is devised and supervised by BIS and operated by the producer. Standard marked products are also continuously checked by BIS for conformity to that standard as a further safeguard. Details of conditions under which a licence for the u&e of the Standard Mark may be granted to manufacturers or producers may be obtained from the Bureau of Indian Standards.

4. SAMPLING

4.1 Representative samples of the material for tests shall be drawn according to the method prescribed in Appendix F of IS : 2052-1968*.

4.2 Criteria for Conformity

4.2.1 A lot shall be considered as conforming to the specification, when:

a) each of the test resuIts for crude protein and acid insoluble ash satisfy the requirements as specified in Table 1, and

b) the test results on the composite sample satisfy the for the remainirig characteristics specified in Table 1.

requirements

4.2.2 If one or more test results do not satisfy the requirements for crude protein and acid insoluble ash, the following procedure shall be adopted for determining the conformity of the material for these two characteristics:

Calculate the mean and range as follows:

Mean ( r) = Sum of the test results Number of test samples

Range ( R ) = difference between the maximum and the minimum values of the test results

The requirements for crude protein and acid insoluble ash shall be considered as fulfilled if:

X- 0.4 R is equal to or greater than the requirements for crude protein, and

g + 0.4 R is less than or equal to the requirement for acid insoluble ash.

*Specification for compounded feeds for cattle (&t reuision ).

5. TESTS

5.1 Tests shall be carried out as prescribed in the relevant appendices of IS : 2052-1968* specified in co1 4 of Table 1 with the exception that B-l.1 of IS : 2052-1968* which prescribes the grinding of the material before analysis, is not applicable.

5.2 Tests for crude protein and acid insoluble ash shall be conducted individually on each of the samples constituting a set of test samples while the tests for the remaining characteristics specified in Table 1, shall be conducted on the composite sample.

5.3 Pure chemicals and distilled water ( see IS : 1070-196Ot ) shall be employed in tests.

NOTE - ‘ Pure chemicals’ shall mean chemicals that do not contain impurities which affedt the experimental results.
